1. Velvet (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: A venue with maybe the best vibe and character in Bend, Velvet is the ultimate place to get a drink in downtown Bend.

The intimate, wood-paneled bar is not big and feels like the place to be on weekends. Furnished, of course, with velvet couches.

Their mixologists craft a variety of fresh cocktails, and they also serve local beers and wine.

This is where Nicole and I go for a drink before or after dinner in downtown Bend.

2. The Stihl Whiskey Bar (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Another bar in downtown Bend that oozes with character is The Stihl Whiskey Bar.

If you like whiskey, you’ll love this place. The selection of bourbons, ryes, and other whiskeys is stellar, and their bartenders mix up lots of creative cocktails.

This vibe at Stihl is part dive bar, part western saloon. It’s one of Nicole’s and my favorite places for a cocktail in Bend.

3. Bar RBC (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: A slightly more upscale bar in downtown Bend is BarRBC.

This is the sister venue to Rancher Butcher Chef (RBC), one of Bend’s best restaurants. BarRBC opened in 2024 and is a small plates concept with a sleek bar and a great cocktail list.

If you like wine, you’ll especially like the BarRBC wine list and wines by the glass (their food is designed to go with wine).

4. Bosa (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: One of our favorite places to eat (especially pasta) in Bend is Bosa. Part of why we love it is the incredible bar and drink menu.

More specifically, Nicole has taught me to love Negronis. This classic Italian cocktail made with Campari is a staple at Bosa; in fact, they have an entire menu of Negronis to try.

Bosa is a popular place on Galveston Ave, so if you score some seats at their bar on a weekend, consider yourself lucky.

5. Dear Irene (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Dear Irene is a fine dining venue in downtown Bend with an upscale bar. So if you are feeling dressy, or want to take your wife somewhere nice, it fits the bill.

The vibe is speakeasy, with dark lighting, velvet chairs, and sophisticated cocktails.

The carefully curated cocktail list is not huge but impressive. It has a massive spirits list, so it’s also a place where you can ask the bartender, “Surprise me with something“.

6. The Flamingo Room (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: For a place in southwest Bend that is a bit more eclectic, check out The Flamingo Room.

While probably not for everyone, this joint is bright, retro, and great for your Instagram. There are hanging plants, artifacts, and delicious cocktails.

There always seems to be a crowd at Flamingo, and always something going on.

7. Cellar 65 (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: It was super exciting in 2024 when Cellar 65 opened, right across the Newport Ave bridge in downtown.

This speakeasy-type venue immediately became one of the best places in Bend to get a cocktail. They serve amazing, beautiful cocktails and have a nice menu of Mediterranean small plates to accompany them.

The hardest part of visiting Cellar 65 is finding it. You want to plug in ‘Blissful Spoon’ in your Maps app. Cellar 65 is directly underneath.

7. Drake (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Drake is a downtown brasserie that is one of Nicole’s and my favorite places to eat in Bend. But it’s also a great venue if you are only out for drinks

It’s a cozy and comfortable spot on the prominent corner of Franklin and Wall St downtown. The elegant bar is simple and serves up hand-crafted cocktails, local beers, and a decent selection of wines by the glass.

So if you are visiting Bend, I highly recommend you stop in Drake, either for a meal or just drinks.

9. Prost! (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Do you like German beer? We all know Bend is a craft beer town, but for me, German beer has always been the gold standard.

The best place for German beer in Bend is Prost!. This German bar and restaurant pours a large selection of imported German pilsners, lagers, hefes, marzans, and Oktoberfest beers.

The menu of German food is great as well (all the classics like Wienerschnitzel and Bratwurst).

It’s also a great place to watch soccer in Bend.

If you are wondering, ‘prost!’ means ‘cheers!’ in German.

10. Sidelines (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Another great spot for watching sports is Sidelines on Wall Street in downtown.

Sidelines is a classic sports bar with lots of TVs and a great bar food menu. Try the wings or nachos, and pair it with whatever local craft beers they are serving on tap.

While we haven’t tried it, Sidelines has also built a reputation for serving one of the better breakfasts in Bend.

11. River Pig Saloon (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: This is a real gem in the Box Factory in Bend. River Pig Saloon is a rugged place that feels like an upscale saloon.

I love the cocktail list at River Pig, and the bar food options make for a great meal or an accompaniment to your drinks. It gets boisterous on weekends if you like a place with some atmosphere.

If you are wondering, River Pig refers to the timber workers of the past that guide logs down rivers to mills. Those guys definitely needed a drink at the end of the day.

12. Hawkeye and Huckleberry (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Nicole and I love this restaurant. We think it’s one of the best restaurants in Bend.

But Hawkeye and Huckleberry in southwest is a great place for cocktails as well. The front bar is modern and sleek. On warm days its faces outside for an al fresco vibe.

Hawk and Huck serves up a tantalizing selection of drinks. The cocktail list is creative, and there is plenty of whiskeys and tequilas to accompany the interesting beers and wines on the menu.

This ‘lounge’ is a great place to eat, drink, or just hang out.

13. San Simón (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: San Simon is a small, eclectic bar on a side alley in downtown Bend. This candle-lit venue focuses on Latin-inspired drinks and simple but delicious bar food.

San Simon is a great place for a pre-dinner drink if you have reservations downtown. The rum, tequila, and mezcal cocktails seem to be their strength.

They open everyday at 3 pm and have happy hour specials until 6 pm.

14. Astro Lounge (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Another cool downtown spot to get drinks is Astro Lounge. This place has been around in Bend for years (early 2000s) and has a loyal local following.

It’s a casual place for cocktails, beers, and nightlife. It’s likely to have a DJ on weekends, and trivia or karaoke any night of the week.

If you are doing a bar crawl in downtown Bend, make Astro Lounge one of your stops. Maybe the last stop.

The Bend Bar Scene

When people think of drinking in Bend, they usually think of breweries. But Bend’s bar and nightlife scene is underrated and reflects the town’s relaxed yet energetic vibe.

Downtown Bend especially has a great concentration of bars and restaurants that make for fun nights out. Most of the recommended spots on this list are in downtown Bend.

But you’ll also find some fun spots for drinks in the southwest Century Dr part of Bend (Hawkeye and Huckleberry and The Flamingo Room), and on Galveston Ave (Bosa).

The Unique and Utterly Delightful Visit to Mazzaroth Vineyard

I was both excited and perplexed when Glenn told me we would visit Mazzaroth Vineyard on a recent Saturday afternoon. I was excited because, well, I love wine and exploring new Frederick area wineries. I was perplexed because I had never even heard of Mazzaroth.

When we pulled up for our 3:30 appointment, if it hadn’t been for the vines covering the south-facing hillside of the property, we would have thought we were rolling up the driveway of someone’s rural home. It was a beautiful property with one of the most spectacular views of any private house I’ve visited in MD.

This was the beginning of one of the most interesting and enjoyable winery experiences Glenn and I have ever had.

A Local Winery That Redefines 'Local', plus Garry!

Exiting our car, Glenn and I exchanged a look as there was literally no one there but us. No one. No tasting room. No food truck. No one-man guitar band, no locals, no guests at all.

But we were almost immediately greeted at our car by Mazzaroth’s owner, Garry Cohen, and his schnauzer, Leo. Both welcomed us very enthusiastically.

After introducing himself and welcoming us to Mazzaroth, Garry led us across the patio and down into what looked to be the basement of his house. Inside was the first evidence of actual winemaking – the whole room was lined with stainless tanks and other equipment. Garry grabbed a couple of glasses and poured us a taste of Vidal Blanc right from the tank.

The Mazzaroth Vineyard Tour

This was the beginning of the most intimate winery tour possible. Garry proceeded to walk us through the entire journey of his wine-making process. He gave us tastes straight from the barrel. He explained in detail how he made his different varietals, why some tasted the way they did, and why they tasted different in different years.

It was fascinating to listen to Garry discuss his successful journey from amateur to successful boutique Maryland wine maker.

For example, he explained the current Mazzaroth Vineyard partnership with local Middletown favorite Fratelli’s (one of the best Italian restaurants near Frederick). Mazzaroth provides Fratelli’s with their house white wine – a tasty blend of whites (including pinot gris) that Garry allowed us to try from the tank. It was delicious!

The following white, also straight from the tank, was Garry’s signature white wine – Vidal Blanc. This was a fruity, bright wine that was both of our favorites.

We were quickly warming to the wine and to Garry, who obviously takes pride in his wines and in being true to his roots.

The Mazzaroth Journey to Boutique Wine Making in Maryland

While we tasted, Garry told us how he and his wife searched for the perfect property for years to grow their grapes. The current location was chosen primarily for its orientation on the hillside and access to sunlight for the vines.

Garry and Mazzaroth have improved their techniques and grown their wine business ever since. Today, they not only grow their own grapes but also source grapes from Maryland’s Eastern shore and from as far away as California.

The operation is small, but the wine is reflective of the care that goes into producing it. The next and notable white we tried (again from the tank) was a Moscato. This wine has a sweet, fruity nose and a crispy, dry mouth feel. I’m no sommelier, but I’d score this one high. This winemaker knows what he’s doing.

The Most Intimate and Personalized Wine Tasting Experience You Will Ever Get

So far we’d been tasting in Garry’s production area, straight from tanks. But Garry eventually moved us to his formal tasting area, literally a tiny counter bar in his basement!

If not for the multiple award-winning wines lined up on the back bar, this would have been no different than being in a friend’s downstairs bar

We quickly got into serious Mazzaroth wine tasting as Garry started us on some reds. We tried a progressive flight of Tannats. Tannat is an attractive red varietal that we had only previously tasted once in the central coast of California (Paso Robles). We ended up purchasing several bottles of the Mazzaroth Tannat!

Garry continued to pour more reds. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are definitely Mazzaroth winners. We eventually also tried his dessert wine (a ruby-style Port wine), which we also bought.

But it’s Garry’s detailed explanation of everything associated with the wine-making business that makes a visit to Mazzaroth Vineyard so enjoyable. As we sipped, Garry explained everything from procuring the grapes, fermenting and blending, the design of the label, and even demonstrating to us how a bottle is labeled.

We emerged from the basement bar totally enamored with Mazzaroth, plus a case of purchased wines in hand and a membership to Mazzaroth’s wine club! We plan to return per Garry’s invitation during a bottling session to participate and help out! Or just when it’s warmer to sip some of those lovely whites on the patio.

As mentioned, you can taste Mazzaroth’s wines for yourself at Fratelli’s in Middletown. It’s also in several local wine shops, including Frederick Wine House. The dessert wine is also on the menu at Up on Market in downtown Frederick.

Are you a fan of mead, or perhaps a wine enthusiast looking to broaden your horizons?

Regardless of your answer, Nicole and I would like to introduce you to a hidden gem that will tantalize your taste buds: Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD.

This established meadery and winery stands out as one of the unique tasting venues in the Frederick area, and it’s an experience that winery lovers in Maryland shouldn’t miss.

I’ll admit that I knew very little about mead before visiting Orchid Cellar. But after trying their small-batch, handcrafted meads, I’m sold on this ancient drink.

What is Mead?

Mead is a beverage made from fermented honey. It is considered by some to be the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage, originating in both Africa and China.

Mead’s popularity declined with the rise of beer and wine, but has made a comeback in recent years with the rise of local mead producers.

Mead generally is sweeter and has a higher alcohol content than wine (10% to 20% vs 9% to 16%). To me, mead most resembles dessert or late harvest wines.

Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery - Basics

Orchid Cellar is a popular spot on nice days, but there’s plenty of seating and you can generally visit any time without a reservation.

What Makes Orchid Cellar Such a Fabulous Tasting Experience?

Orchid Cellar combines lots of the characteristics that Nicole and I look for in a great winery experience.

Nicole and I recently visited on a warm, sunny Saturday in April, and the atmosphere was truly magical. The farm radiated with beauty, and the venue was abuzz with visitors, yet it maintained a comfortable sense of space.

A very nice tasting room employee gave us a detailed explanation of the Orchid Cellar meads as we tasted them, including how they are made, the different varietals, and the history of the meadery.

From Poland to Rural Maryland - The History of Orchid Cellar

While visiting Orchid Cellar, we were lucky enough to meet and spend time chatting with one of the founders, Marzanna Wilk.

Marzanna explained that she and her husband came to the US from Poland, and in the early 2000s, when she started to miss the taste of mead, she could not really find it in Maryland.

Fast-forward to 2006, and Marzanna and her husband Andrzej began making their own mead in Maryland. In 2009, they purchased the property that would eventually become the Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery.

Their meads gained popularity, leading to consistent business growth.

By 2016, they had moved into a cabin-style tasting room (they built it themselves!), which serves as the foundation of the meadery today.

The Setting: Relaxing Farm Vibes in Middletown

One of the biggest reasons to visit Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD is the setting and atmosphere.

Set on a quiet farm property, you’ll find:

Rolling hills and mountain views
Plenty of outdoor seating areas on scenic decks, patios, and sprawling lawns, perfect for sunny days
A cozy tasting room with rustic charm
A vineyard to wander and farm animals to visit

One of the reasons Nicole and I love visiting wineries is the peaceful setting. Much like its nearby Middletown neighbor, Mazzaroth Vineyards, Orchid Cellar fits the bill.

Tasting Options at Orchid Cellar

Part of the fun in visiting Orchid Cellar is all the new types of beverages you can try. They serve not only wines, but a long list of traditional meads, and several incredibly delicious sparkling meads.

You can mix and match tastings however you like, and the variety of mead flavors is super interesting and fun. Here are some of Nicole and I’s favorites:

Squire – this is the most traditional honey mead
Jester – made with caramelized honey and intense orange flavor
Ghost Hunter – very peculiar, sweet and spicy combination
Wild Bery – our favorite of the sparkling meads

Tips for Visiting Orchid Cellars in Middletown, MD

Before you go, here are a few tips to make the most of your visit:

Check hours they are open from Friday to Sunday (otherwise by appointment)
Nice Weekends Bring Crowds get there early to grab the best seating
Snacks and food cheese and crackers are available for purchase, but you can also bring your own
Plan for a relaxing visit—this isn’t a rushed experience
Consider buying a bottle (or two) to take home, we took home several

Tickets to Upcoming Frederick Keys Games

Introduction to Frederick Keys Minor League Baseball

After spending several years in the MLB Draft League, the Frederick Keys are returning to affiliated baseball in 2026. The Baltimore Orioles’ High-A affiliate has relocated to Frederick, and the Keys will play in the South Atlantic League.

The Keys play their games during the summer months (usually June to September) on Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. This year brings new renovations to Harry Grove, in partnership with the city of Frederick and the Maryland Stadium Authority.

The Keys have played in Frederick since 1989 and are named after Frederick native Francis Scott Key, the writer of the Star-Spangled Banner.

Fireworks at Frederick Keys Games

The Keys host fireworks after every Friday and Saturday game throughout the season.

On Friday, July 3, at 7 p.m., the Keys will have their annual Independence Day Fireworks Extravaganza game.

The Sunday, August 30, at 6 p.m. will be the only Sunday Fireworks game of the season.

Tips for Buying Frederick Keys Tickets

Tickets for Frederick Keys games can be bought in advance online or at the gate on game day. While we have bought walkup tickets many times on gameday, we recommend buying Frederick Keys tickets in advance.

Frederick Keys Tickets from the Team Store

The Frederick Keys team store sells advanced tickets. You can buy multiple types of tickets:

single game tickets
season memberships
group tickets

But you can also find tickets at the Frederick Keys TicketNetwork Box Office.

Families: while this is not highly publicized, take note of the ‘Kids Courtesy’ program!

Youth athletes under 12 who wear their uniform to the game receive free admission with a paid adult from Sunday to Thursday! It’s one of the best free things for kids in Frederick!

Frederick Keys Ticket Pricing

There are three seating areas at Nymeo, each with its own pricing. You really can’t go wrong with any of them. (Note: prices vary depending on advance purchase vs. day-of game).

Field Level: $18-20. This is the lower section closest to the field. You won’t be more than 8 rows away.
Reserved Level: $13-18. These are the 8 sections is above Field Level.
General Admission: $12-16. These are bleacher seats above and down the 1st and 3rd base lines.

Since the price difference between all areas is only a few bucks, I recommend getting Field-Level seats as close to the field as possible.

Part of minor league baseball’s fun is the intimate feeling of being so close to the action, so why not get close?

Youth, seniors, and military get discounts on certain ticket tiers.

All About Nymeo Field and Harry Grove Stadium

The Keys play at Frederick’s own ballpark right outside of town: Nymeo Field at Harry Grove Stadium. It’s a fabulous, small ballpark that is easy to navigate and makes for a fun family outing or date night.

Its location right off I-70 and I-270 makes it easy to get to. Baseball fans in Baltimore, Washington D.C., or even Northern Virginia should consider it a great day trip that is easy to get to if you love minor league baseball.

There are no bad seats at Nymeo Field, but refer to this seating chart if you are shopping for tickets. Note that very few seats are in the shade on a hot day, but you can escape the sun in the

Parking for Frederick Keys Games

One of the great things about minor league baseball is that you simply don’t have to worry about things like parking.

Parking is 100% free at Frederick Keys games, and there is a main lot right outside the Nymeo main gate. Nicole and I have never had a any issue rolling right up and parking.

There is a secondary lot behind right field for busy games when overflow parking is needed.

Apparently, there is such a thing as a ‘reserved parking pass’ for Frederick Keys games, but I suggest skipping it.

Handicap Accessibility at Frederick Keys Games

Harry Grove Stadium makes it easy for wheelchair visitors, in compliance with the ADA.

There are handicapped parking spaces very close to the main gate.

Handicapped and companion seating is located in various places, but most notably on the main concourse level behind sections 102, 107, 108, 119, and 120.

Frankly, these are some of the best seats in the stadium! There are also lifts to the concourse.

You can buy handicap tickets online, or you can call the box office at 301.815.9939 or buy them at the ticket booth.

Fan Experience at Frederick Keys Games

Game day at Nymeo for a Frederick Keys game is tons of fun. It’s one of our favorite summertime activities in Frederick, especially for families.

There is basic security and a bag search to enter the stadium, but it’s usually a breeze. You can be from your car to your seat in literally minutes.

As mentioned above, there are no bad seats. You’ll be up front and personal with professional baseball. Gates open one hour before the first pitch. Get there early to eat, drink, and soak it all in.

The Food and Beer at Frederick Keys Games

Let’s talk about food!

The main concourse has four concession stands, and prices are reasonable. You’ll find the standard ballpark fare: hot dogs, popcorn, peanuts, chicken tenders, pizza, and fries.

While this changes year to year, search out the local items, including crab cakes, incredible burgers from the Gourmet Angus Stand, a pop-up from downtown Frederick’s favorite Brewer’s Alley, and Bruster’s ice cream.

My favorite part of attending a Keys game? The beer!

Again, look for the local brews. Frederick’s Flying Dog has its own stand, and you can also find craft beers from some of my favorite Frederick breweries: Monocacy Brewing and Olde Mother Brewing.

Remember that all food purchases are cashless payments, so have your credit card or Apple Pay ready to go.

Frederick Keys Games for Families and Kids

There are few activities for kids in Frederick better than a Keys game. The team and venue have gone out of their way to make it a tremendous family outing.

Some reasons that make it a great family outing:

The Keys offers a premium option in Club Box Suites at Nymeo. This option offers upscale dining and air conditioning.

I’ve never been to the Mattress Warehouse Club, so I can’t personally review the experience. But from talking to friends who have, it sounds pretty neat.

You may be familiar with the Spire City GhostHounds, Frederick’s second minor league baseball team.

After playing their first season at Nymeo Field in 2023, the team decided to take the 2025 season off due to scheduling quirks (mainly an uneven number of teams in The Atlantic League).

After announcing that their extension would continue through the 2025 season, that extension seems indefinite as they do not plan to play in 2026 as well.

1. The Visitation Hotel (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The Visitation Hotel opened in December 2024 with a splash. This Marriott Tribute property was created by converting a historic 19th-century building that once served as a convent and a Catholic school for women.

The hotel is stunning in various ways, primarily due to how it incorporates its rich history, and its upscale vibe.

Its location is also unbeatable—just two blocks off Market Street in downtown Frederick, it’s within walking distance to all the fantastic shops, restaurants, and bars the area has to offer.

Additionally, the on-site Wye Oak Tavern, a restaurant by celebrity chefs Michael and Bryan Voltaggio, is a destination in its own right. Wye Oak is the best restaurant in Frederick and provides a fabulous dining experience in what was originally the convent’s chapel.

If you want the ultimate downtown Frederick hotel experience, this is the place to stay!

2. 10 Clarke Bed and Breakfast (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: 10 Clarke is a charming B&B situated in an unbeatable location, ideal for both relaxation and exploration of Frederick.

Housed in a lovely historic Victorian home, this bed and breakfast offers a serene escape, yet is just a stone’s throw from the heart of downtown Frederick.

The luxuriously decorated rooms beautifully blend European elegance with early American charm, creating a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.

But again, one of the best features of this property is its downtown location.

You can easily walk to Frederick attractions like Carroll Creek Park, including the cluster of Frederick Breweries at the east end.

You’ll have a selection of all the best Frederick restaurants just a few blocks north of you on N Market St, including Il Porto, TheWine Kitchen on the Creek, and Hootch and Banter.

4. The Wedgewood Inn (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The Wedgewood Inn, a single-unit property dating back to 1907, was recently fully renovated. The location doesn’t get much better in downtown Frederick.

The unit has three bedrooms, each with a king-size bed. There’s also three bathrooms and a sun porch.

The property is right next to Magoo’s Pub (one of the best bars in Frederick). You’ll be one block off N. Market Street, where all the shopping and nightlife happen in downtown Fredericksburg.

5. Inn on Market (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Nicole and I love this place! Inn on Market (and its accompanying bistro Up on Market) is a landmark venue in Frederick, MD.

The building dates back to 1792, when it was owned by Richard Potts, a member of the Continental Congress. However, today it’s a French-style Inn at the north end of Market Street in downtown Frederick.

It has four unique rooms, each with a private bath, elegant design, and comfort.

Its best feature may be the Bistro. It’s an excellent place for breakfast or brunch (it’s French!), but it’s also one of the best places in Frederick for dinner.

The location can’t be beaten, and Frederick’s heart is outside the Inn’s door.

6. Downtown Frederick Airbnb, VRBO, and Rentals

Why We Love It: If you are deciding where to stay in downtown Frederick, we highly recommend considering a vacation rental.

Like most towns with any amount of tourist visitation, Frederick has a great inventory of vacation rentals, Airbnbs, and VRBOs.

Downtown is the best part of Frederick! Downtown Frederick is historic, charming, lively, and walkable.

There’s a plethora of bars, restaurants, and breweries in downtown Frederick. The shopping beats expectations, there is a small art district, and you can even visit some of the distilleries in downtown Frederick.

Nicole and I are locals, and while we don’t live in downtown Frederick, we virtually live there because we spend so much of our free time there. Some of our favorite places:

If you are planning a visit to downtown Frederick and trying to decide between a boutique inn or hotel and a vacation rental, here are some considerations.

Staying at one of Frederick’s Boutique Inns or Hotels has the following advantages:

On-site restaurants (for me, that means breakfast!)

If you want the ultimate Frederick visitor experience, especially if you are looking for a romantic getaway or really love history, we recommend you book the Visitation Hotel.

You’ll spend more, but it’s by far the most interesting place to stay.

The vacation rentals in downtown Frederick have a lot going for them as well. These work great for:

families or groups needing multiple rooms
kitchens, ability to make some meals
remote work

Airbnb and VRBO have made booking really great and affordable rentals in place like downtown Frederick so easy that its definitely an option to consider.

Is Downtown Frederick Walkable?

Absolutely yes! In fact, one of Frederick’s best characteristics is its charming, walkable downtown.

If you are planning a visit to Frederick, you should strongly consider staying downtown so you can walk everywhere.

Are There Luxury Hotels in Downtown Frederick?

Not many. But the Visitation Hotel is a Marriott Tribute property and quite nice.

It also has the best restaurant in Frederick, the Wye Oak Tavern.

Is Parking Available Downtown?

Yes, parking is incredibly easy and accessible downtown. You can often find a parking spot on the street in downtown Frederick, even on the main artery (N. Market Street).

There are also two garages downtown: the Carroll Creek Garage and the Church Street Garage where you can park for a few dollars.

Are There Wineries and Breweries in Downtown Frederick?

Frederick is a historic, charming, and lively town, with some great accommodations to match. This post lists hotels and lodging options in Frederick, MD, that differ from the many chain hotels in the area.

1. The Visitation Hotel (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: As mentioned above, downtown Frederick’s biggest venue opening in years was The Visitation Hotel in December 2024. This Marriott Tribute property was created by converting a historic 19th-century property, previously a convent and a catholic school for women.

The new property is stunning in many ways. The property exudes character, primarily because of the many ways they’ve incorporated its history.

The location also can’t be beaten. It’s two blocks off Market Street in downtown Frederick, within walking distance to all the great shops, restaurants, and bars in Frederick.

Finally, the on-site Wye Oak Tavern, a restaurant created by celebrity chefs Michael and Bryan Voltaggio, is worth a visit on its own. Wye Oak delivers a fabulous dining experience in what was originally the convent’s chapel.

2. 10 Clarke Bed and Breakfast (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: 10 Clarke is a lovely B&B in a perfect location. The property is a historic Victorian home that has been converted into a relaxing place to stay. The rooms are luxurious and unique, with a mix of European and early American decor.

The breakfast gets rave reviews from guests, plentiful and delicious. 10 Clarke is one of Frederick’s few true Bed and Breakfast experiences.

However, its best characteristic for visitors might be the location. Baker Park (Frederick’s main downtown park) is around the corner. Downtown Frederick, with plentiful restaurants and bars, is just a few short blocks away. Try Il Porto just one block north.

3. Hollerstown Hill Bed and Breakfast (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This is another bed and breakfast in the same neighborhood that has many of the same qualities. Hollerstown Hill is a distinctive pink Victorian home decorated with antiques and collectibles. Each of the four guest rooms is unique and comfortable.

This property also benefits from a tremendous location. You can easily walk to Frederick attractions like Carroll Creek Park, including the cluster of Frederick Breweries at the east end.

Top Frederick restaurants, such as The Ordinary Hen, The Tasting Room Frederick, and Hooch and Banter, are also just blocks away.

4. The Wedgewood Inn (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Another downtown, centrally located property in Frederick is The Wedgewood Inn.

This is a single-unit property that dates back to 1907 but was recently totally renovated. The unit has three bedrooms, each with a king-size bed. There’s also a sun porch.

The property is right downtown, next to Magoo’s Pub (one of the best pubs in Frederick). If you want to be close to downtown Frederick, you can’t beat the location.

5. Inn on Market (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Inn on Market (and its accompanying bistro Up on Market) is a landmark establishment in Frederick. The building’s history dates back to 1792 when it was owned by Richard Potts, a member of the Continental Congress.

Today, it’s a French-styled Inn at the north end of Market Street in downtown Frederick. It has four unique rooms, each with a private bath, elegant design, and comfort.

Its best feature may be the Bistro downstairs. It’s an excellent place for breakfast or brunch (think French baked goods), but it’s also one of Frederick’s best dinner spots. We also put it on our list of best bars in Frederick.

The location can’t be beaten, and Frederick’s heart is outside the Inn’s door.

6. Inn at Springfield Manor (Thurmont, MD)

Why We Love It: If you don’t mind staying slightly outside of Frederick, you can consider options like the Inn at Springfield Manor. This property on a beautiful estate is about 11 miles north of Frederick (~15 minutes), and there’s a lot to like about it.

The Inn itself is a charming 18th-century estate home on the slopes of the Catoctin Mountains. It has gorgeous, elevated, sweeping views, best enjoyed by the Springfield Manor Winery and Brewery on the property.

In fact, one of the best benefits of staying at this Inn is the opportunity to enjoy the local wine, beer, or spirits and hanging out next door.

The inn has several second- and third-floor suites, all of different sizes (most for two people) and each with its own character.

One advantage of this location is its accessibility to local hikes. One of our favorite area hikes is about a 30-minute drive from Springfield: the Annapolis Rock Trail Hike.

7. The Rusty Rose (Jefferson, MD)

Why We Love It: This is a great property if you need more space, as its a full house to yourself with three bedrooms. The Rusty Rose is in the town of Jefferson, MD just 15 minutes southwest of Frederick.

This farmhouse was restored in 2021, so its full of charm but has all the modern amenities you need. A great kitchen and plenty of space to hang out.

You’ll still be close to Frederick, plus close to all the surrounding hikes around Frederick and wineries around Fredrick, all within a short drive.

8. Strawberry Inn - Airbnb (New Market, MD)

Why We Love It: The Strawberry Inn in New Market is another inn to consider slightly outside of Frederick. New Market is another historic town about 15 minutes east of Frederick.

The Strawberry Inn is right in downtown New Market and claims to be the longest-operating guest house in Maryland.

It’s another charming historic Inn, built in the early 1800s. Reviews tend to suggest that its best feature is its enchanting garden. If you like cats, you’ll find some of those as well.

New Market is a good base for visiting the Frederick area. Many of the best wineries in the area are just north of New Market, including Linganore Winecellars, Black Ankle Winery, and Hidden Hills Farm and Vineyard. Rock Hill Orchards in nearby Mount Airy is also a great U-Pick farm.

9. Antietam Overlook Farm (Keedysville, MD)

Why We Love It: Venturing even further out from Frederick, this time to the west, there are some additional exciting places to stay in the Maryland countryside. Antietam Overlook Farm is a B&B-style Inn dating from the 18th century about 30 minutes outside of Frederick.

Antietam Overlook is on a large mountain farm with beautiful surroundings. It is minutes from Antietam Battlefield, a major Civil War history site.

The rooms, decor, and breakfast are upscale, but country and get rave reviews. You are very close to Harpers Ferry, the Appalachian Trail, and Big Cork Vineyards (one of the best wineries around Frederick).

10. Inn BoonsBoro (Boonsboro, MD)

Why We Love It: Boonsboro is a small town northwest of Frederick (about 18 miles and 30 minutes). The Inn BoonsBoro is right downtown and is a highly recommended place to stay in the area.

Rooms at this Inn are slightly pricier, but according to the many excellent reviews, they are worth it. A stay at the Inn BoonsBoro is more of a luxury experience while maintaining country charm.

There are ample relaxation areas, including courtyards and balconies. Stay here if you want to pamper yourself while in the Frederick area.

The property has a long history dating back to the 18th century and has been a hotel or inn for decades.

Frederick's Growing Popularity as a Tourist Destination

Frederick, Maryland, is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination. It’s already frequently visited for business and commerce due to its transportation crossroads and strategic location between Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

But travelers in the mid-atlantic and US in general are beginning to discover Frederick, MD as a great getaway town. Frederick has a lively downtown scene, tons of history, and is a sneak good food town.

Several years ago, when I was still considering a move from Loudoun County, Virginia, to the Frederick area, there were many pros and cons to consider. One of the ‘pros’ that finally convinced me to move was the abundance of quality golf courses near Frederick, MD.

In this article, I rank the Best Golf Courses Near Frederick, MD, based on my personal experience playing rounds at each.

Rattlewood Golf Course

Rattlewood Golf Course in Mount Airy is a scenic par-72 public layout known for its variety of holes, strategic risk-reward opportunities, and rolling terrain that challenges golfers of all skill levels.

Conveniently located just off I-70, the course features a full driving range, short-game practice areas, and a spacious clubhouse, making it a popular choice for casual rounds, lessons, and tournaments.

Golf is one of my passions, and since moving to Maryland, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed discovering all the spectacular golf courses around Frederick.

We are fortunate in Frederick to have some of the best golf courses in Maryland in close proximity.

Public and Semi-Private Golf Courses Around Frederick

As most golfers know, there are two universes when it comes to golf courses: public and private. Some public golf courses are considered ‘Semi-Private’ because, in addition to being open to anyone, they offer some form of limited membership.

Private Golf Courses around Frederick (often called Country Clubs) are limited in number. Most notably, Holly Hills Country Club, just east of town, is a private golf club.

This article and ranking will focus exclusively on public and semi-private golf courses around Frederick, MD.

Several of the courses in the list below are public but offer some sort of limited membership. Worthington Manor and The Links at Challedon are good examples.

Factors to Consider When Ranking Frederick Golf Courses

True golfers know that golf is more than a game. Playing a round of golf is an experience. Many factors go into how a golf course delivers its overall experience.

These can be very personal to each golfer, but when ranking golf courses, here are the factors that matter to me:

Greens Fees for Golf Around Frederick (What Are Costs Like?)

There’s a golf course for everyone in the Frederick area. Golf can be an expensive sport. Greens fees at the premier courses on the list below (for example, Whiskey Creek, Worthington Manor, PB Dye) can be well over $100, especially on weekends.

For serious golfers, you won’t find the cost for these courses out of the ordinary, especially for the tremendous golf experience they deliver.

At the same time, there are some fabulous places to play golf for less near Frederick. Clustered Spires and Glade Valley are great courses close to Frederick with very reasonable greens fees.

For a really fun golf experience at a reasonable rate, head to Little Bennett Golf Course south of Frederick. This course, along with Rattlewood nearby, are Montgomery County Golf (MGC) courses, perfect for less serious golfers or economically minded players.

Why Play It: Stunning views! If you enjoy golf with beautiful scenery, panoramic tee shots, and picturesque golf holes, then you’ll love Worthington Manor Golf Course. Located 10 minutes from Frederick in Urbana, Worthington is a special course right in our backyard.

However, bring your ‘A’ game because Worthington is a challenge. The first time I played Worthington, I was paired with a group of low-handicappers who wanted to play the tips. Of course, I joined them, and let’s just say it was a humbling experience.

Worthington has numerous accolades and is a regular host of U.S. Open Qualifiers.

They offer several membership options; however, they are only available periodically. (Many of my Urbana buddies are members and rave about the benefits.)

2. Whiskey Creek Golf Club

Why Play It: Whiskey Creek Golf Club is another ‘destination’ golf course located in Ijamsville, about 15 minutes from Frederick.

It is packed with character, with many memorable holes, most notably the signature 18th, which still has the ruins of an old farmhouse.

Whiskey Creek, designed by Architect J. Michael Poellot and Ernie Els, features several holes with elevated greens and stunning views.

The fifth tee is the highest and provides a view across Maryland. The fourteenth hole is similar, this time looking over the creek itself (which seems to attract golf balls).

People come from all over the DMV to play Whiskey – the overall golf experience, including the course, the clubhouse, the bar, and the grill, is fabulous.

We in Frederick are lucky to have it in our backyard!

3. Musket Ridge Golf Club

Why Play It: Yet another classic Maryland golf course, this one 20 minutes up I-70 from Frederick, is Musket Ridge Golf Club. The course layout matches the name, as you’ll spend time playing up and down a Catoctin Mountain ridge during a round at Musket Ridge.

Starting with the first hole, tee shots are dramatic, often elevated, and blind. If you can play around during the fall when the colors are near peak, it’s a stunning setting.

I find the greens at Musket Ridge particularly challenging, so bring your best putting game.

I’ve heard good things about their membership options if you live in the area.

Why Play It: This course might have the biggest golf bang for the buck around Frederick. Little Bennett Golf Course is a super fun and interesting course in Clarksburg. It’s one of my favorite places to play golf around Frederick.

Little Bennett is a Montgomery County Regional Park filled with fun things to do (read about bike riding in Little Bennett). It happens to have a golf course right in the center, with very reasonable rates.

Don’t let the reduced greens fees fool you. This is a great golf course with creative holes that reward shot-making, imagination, and course knowledge. More than anything, it’s a fun track.

5. PB Dye Golf Club

Why Play It: Could easily be higher on this list. PB Dye Golf Club is a massively creative golf course and a must-visit if you are a golfer in the Frederick, MD area.

Designed by famous golf architect Pete Dye (who also designed the Links at Perry Cabin on Maryland’s Eastern Shore), P.B. Dye Golf Club will test your golf skills and require every club in your bag.

The course is packed with character, quirky, and difficult. The layout is beautiful, in a gorgeous rural setting south of Frederick. It’s also the only course in Maryland that uses Penn G-2 Bent Grass.

Why Play It: Maryland National was the Frederick area golf course I heard plenty about long before I moved here.

For good reason, it’s a gorgeous course just down the road from Musket Ridge in the Catoctin Mountains.

It has a rolling-hills vibe, with plenty of water and regular wildlife wandering onto the fairways. I also love the facility, excellent practice area, cool tavern, and just an all-around great place for a golf outing.

Rates are very reasonable, but because of that, I find tee times on weekends in very high demand. Check it out!

7. Glade Valley Golf Club

Why Play It: Glade Valley Golf Club is a no-frills course just east of Frederick in the middle of a pleasant Walkersville, MD community. It sits in rural countryside at the foot of the Catoctin Mountains, kept in great condition.

Glade Valley is one of the courses I love to walk. It’s not too strenuous up and down, and walking a round at Glade Valley feels like a walk in nature.

Greens fees are very reasonable, especially for the quality of the course and its facilities. I wouldn’t consider it a ‘destination’ course, but it’s a great place to put in your Frederick golf course rotation.

Glade Valley also has membership options.

8. Rattlewood Golf Course

Why Play It: Rattlewood is another golf course where I’m a regular player, and the more I play it, the more I like it.

Rattlewood is about 20 minutes east of Frederick, just south of Mount Airy. Similar to Little Bennett, it’s run by Montgomery County.

It’s a stress-free place to play, offers reasonable rates, and never seems crowded. For the price, I’m always impressed with the condition of the course and the greens.

It’s another course I often walk nine holes, usually when I need a tee time at the last minute.

It has a few exciting holes where the tee shots require you to clear water or allow you to go for the green (always fun!).

Why Play It: Another course near Mount Airy is The Links at Challedon. This is the course I’ve already decided I need to play more often, because I always seem to visit it on bad-weather days.

It’s an attractive course with excellent facilities. The restaurant/grill is great for an after-golf meal.

Tees and greens are well-maintained, and the club offers a robust membership program for local residents.

10. Clustered Spires Golf Club

Why Play It: For the golf course closest to Frederick, and with some of the best rates you’ll find anywhere, check out Clustered Spires Golf Course.

Clustered Spires is operated by the City of Frederick and is located on the northeast side of town on what used to be a dairy farm.

It is a laid-back, low-key place frequented by local Frederick golfers. It’s another place I often visit to walk nine holes at the last minute.

Despite being close to Frederick, the course still feels rural and natural. It’s also a great place for beginners or high handicappers, as it’s not terribly difficult.

11. Richland Golf Club

Ratings and Rankings:

3.9 out of 5 Stars. GolfPass

Why Play It: Richland Golf Club is in Middletown, MD, just up the road from Frederick.

Some say it’s dated, but in my opinion, it’s a well-laid-out course with interesting and creative holes.

It’s less hilly than its Maryland National and Musket Ridge neighbors to the north. But the course is long and challenging, and shooting a good score is tough.

You get many of the same Catoctin Mountain views at Richland, characteristic of so many of the golf courses around Frederick.

1. Dutch's Daughter (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: Dutch’s Daughter is one of the most popular restaurants in Frederick and the proper steak restaurant in town. With a 40-year history in the area, if you are looking for the classic steak house meal, this is the place to go in Frederick.

The Dutch’s Daughter menu has all the classic cuts: filet mignon, NY strip, rib eye, and prime rib on the weekends. The appetizers, salads, and sides are amazing, and the wine list is quite good. Save room for dessert.

You can dine in any of Dutch’s Daughter’s multiple dining rooms, but we recommend you head to the basement area—Dutch’s Dungeon. This bar seating area has a better vibe (and the same menu).

2. Up on Market Bistro (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: This is another of our favorite restaurants in Frederick, but definitely not a proper steak house. Up on Market is more of a European bistro with a heavy emphasis on French food and wine.

While you can get a lot of French classics, like bourguignon and duck, it is one of the best places to get a steak in Frederick. The filet mignon with frites is fabulous, and there is also a rib eye, rack of lamb, several other meat dishes.

A big bonus of a steak dinner at Up on Market is the exquisite collection of French (including Bordeaux) wines on the wine list. Amazing!

Save room for dessert and try one of the unusual after-dinner drinks on the menu.

3. Wye Oak Tavern (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: Wye Oak Tavern burst onto the Frederick restaurant scene in December 2024 and immediately became a must-visit restaurant.

It’s the creation of celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio (a Frederick native) and the anchor restaurant at the new Visitation Hotel.

The menu at Wye Oak is fabulous. It’s fine dining with a local flare. You can take your meal in many different directions at Wye Oak Tavern, but there’s a heavy emphasis on beef and steak.

Their signature entree is prime rib, but you can also get an exquisite rib eye (from Roseda Farms), New York strip, or filet mignon. The starters, wine list, and desserts are top-notch. This is a special place!

4. Wilcom's Inn (Monrovia, MD)

Steak House Vibes: Wilcom’s Inn is 15 minutes outside downtown Frederick in Monrovia, but we’ve included it because it’s one of our go-to steak restaurants around Frederick.

Since we live close to Wilcom’s, we are regulars there and love this off-the-beaten-path secret restaurant!

Wilcom’s looks like a dive bar from the outside, but don’t be fooled. There’s a great menu and great food inside. The owners are Peruvian, which has a big influence on the menu. But the house specialty is steak.

Wilcom’s signature steakhouse entrees include Filet Mignon, Rib Eye, and New York Strip, all of which can be served with a crab cake and a variety of sides.

The wine list is sneaky good, with an especially good selection of international wines. Your server at Wilcom’s can probably recommend a few special bottles not on the menu.

5. The Wine Kitchen on the Creek (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: This is another of Frederick’s special occasion restaurants. The Wine Kitchen benefits from a stellar location right on Carroll Creek, and its menu is a wine-oriented fine dining creation with lots of creative flair.

There’s a variety of steak dishes, as well as appetizers and entrees that complement the wine (such as duck, paella, and gnocchi).

The Wine Kitchen also focuses on responsibly sourced beef, much of it local. For example, their New York Strip and Short Ribs come from Roseda Farms in Monkton, MD.

Of course, wine lovers will enjoy the domestic and internationally focused wine list, which is organized to encourage ordering ‘flights’ (sets of 3 tastes of wine).

We love the Wine Kitchen because it’s an upscale place in Frederick and often lively (a great bar for drinks in Frederick).

Plus, it’s so centrally located that you can stroll Carroll Creek before or after your meal or hit up another Frederick hot spot for another drink (try out the McClintock Back Bar!).

6. The Tasting Room (Frederick, MD)

Category: Modern

Why We Love It: We consider The Tasting Room one of the anchor restaurants in downtown Frederick. It’s located right in the heart, at the corner of Market and Church Street, and is one of the best fine-dining restaurants in Frederick.

The Tasting Room menu includes Filet Mignon, Flat Iron Steak, and Rib Eye. It also offers some of the best starters, salads, and sides of any upscale restaurant in town.

Add a top-rated wine menu, and you have all the ingredients for an amazing steak dinner.

Also, note that The Tasting Room has a great bar and is a fabulous place for cocktails. Make a reservation, especially on weekends.

What Makes a Great Steakhouse?

Nicole and I often debate about our favorite types of food, our favorite restaurants in Frederick, and where we want to eat at any particular time.

One thing we agree on is that there is nothing better than a steakhouse dinner or a high-end meal featuring steak.

Frederick is fortunate to have some great restaurants. A few are proper steak houses, and several others focus on a broader range of cuisine but are great places to get a steak.

So, what factors did we consider in ranking Frederick steak houses? Certainly, quality cuts of beef and the ability to prepare them just right (Nicole and I both love medium rare).

But other factors are essential:

Starters and Salads
Side Dishes
Wine List (reds!)
Desserts
Overall Vibe of the Restaurant

Does a Great Steak Dinner Only Come from Steakhouses?

Another debate Nicole and I often have is whether you can only get a great steak dinner at a steakhouse (i.e., a restaurant primarily focused on steak).

My definitive answer is ‘no’. We are lucky to have some great steakhouses in Frederick (and actually some of the best steakhouses in Maryland), places like Dutchs Daughter in Frederick, which makes it clear from its menu that steak is its primary entree.

However, some of the best steaks in Frederick are served by restaurants such as Up on Market, Wye Oak Tavern, and The Wine Kitchen. These restaurants clearly emphasize beef entrees but have diverse menus with broader themes.

Hiking the Annapolis Rock Trail, Possibly Frederick’s Best Day Hike

The Annapolis Rock Trail Hike is not only one of the best day hikes near Frederick, but one of the most popular hikes in Maryland.

After doing it recently with Nicole, I can see why. The 5.3-mile up-and-back length is perfect for a day hike, and you are rewarded with beautiful views.

Annapolis Rock Trail Hike Basics

Location: Just off Exit 42 of I-70 South of Hagerstown (see below)
Distance from Frederick: 14.4 Miles, ~25 Minutes

Parking and Fees: Ample Parking Is Available at the Annapolis Rock Trailhead (but it fills up quickly). No Fees. Annapolis Rock Parking Address Link
Trailhead: Look for the “Welcome to the Appalachian Trail” sign at the top of the parking lot
Total Distance: 5.3 Miles, Out and Back
Duration: ~3 Hours
Elevation Gain: 780 Feet
Difficulty: Moderate
Dog Friendly: Yes

What You'll Experience on the Annapolis Rock Trail Hike

This is a classic ‘reward’ hike. You’ll start by reading about the Appalachian Trail at the trailhead; there are multiple day hikes that begin from this parking lot.

The Appalachian Trail runs for 41 miles in Maryland, marked by its classic white blazes. (Fun Fact: my aunt was president of the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club when I was young, and took me on a maintenance trip where I got to paint white blazes on trees.)

The first half mile of the trail is alongside I-70 and beneath US-40, both of which create plenty of traffic noise, and you’ll initially wonder why anyone would consider this hike peaceful.

But fear not. Soon, you’ll be climbing the Appalachian Trail along a wide, comfortable, and peaceful trail, with everything building towards a rewarding finish.

Along the way, you’ll pass signs for an offshoot trail to the Pine Knob Shelter. This is a popular camping area for through-hikers on the AT.

After ~2.2 miles, look for signs for the connector trail to “Annapolis Rocks,” which is only 0.3 miles from your reward.

The Rewards of the Annapolis Rock Views

No one is going to identify Maryland as a state with epic views from towering peaks or stunning mountain summits. But here and there, you’ll find amazing panoramas. Annapolis Rock is one of them.

After 2.5 miles, you’ll finally reach Annapolis Rock, with breathtaking views of the Cumberland Valley before you. You’ll likely see the lake at Greenbrier State Park.

The views are great anytime, we did it after work at sunset, and the colors were splendid.

Additional Tips and Suggestions for the Annapolis Rock Hike

Finishing the hike means retracing your steps back to the parking lot
There’s an option to continue to Black Rock Cliff, ~1 more mile for more rocks and views
Bring plenty of water, especially in summer
Also, I recommend bringing a ‘summit beer.’

Why Stay Here: This is the best area for visitors seeking to be at the heart of Frederick’s historic charm, with boutique shops, restaurants, and breweries within walking distance.

Downtown is Frederick’s best characteristic. So if you are coming for a visit, staying here is a no-brainer. You’ll be close to Carroll Creek, the heart of Frederick, and be able to walk to virtually anywhere.

The restaurant scene in Frederick is sneaky good, and the best spots are all downtown. The same applies to the best bars in Frederick, as well as the shopping and art.

If you love breweries, the cluster of Frederick breweries around Carroll Creek makes for a great beer crawl.

Pro Tip: Try to be within a few blocks of North Market Street, the main drag in downtown Frederick.

2. South Frederick / I-270 and I-70 Corridor

Why Stay Here: For many, staying in this area will be most convenient because they are passing through Frederick. The I-270 and I-70 corridor makes for easy access to several chain hotels and restaurants.

But it can be a good place to stay in Frederick for other reasons. You’ll be close to Nymeo Field (home to the Frederick Keys). The Monocacy Battlefield is in this area and is Frederick’s most important historical site. Downtown Frederick is still only minutes away.

Francis Scott Key Mall (Frederick’s largest) is here, as is the Frederick Visitor Center.

Plus, if you plan to visit the many cool things to do around Frederick, such as Tree Trekkers or Sugarloaf Mountain, it provides fast access.

It’s also the best area to stay if you want the best access to the outdoor adventures north of Frederick, such as Cunningham Falls State Park, Catoctin Mountain Park, and Gambrill State Park.

Access to the Monocacy for kayaking is in this area, and the best hiking, biking, and some great Fredrick golf courses are all north of Frederick. Staying in this part of town can make sense for those who are focused on the outdoors.

Why Stay Here: Route 40, stretching west out of Frederick, is more commonly known as “The Golden Mile” and has a rich history. It was part of the National Historic Road, built in the early 1800s, the first federally funded highway.

In later years, it became a hub of commercial activity in Frederick, as many businesses and shopping areas developed around it.

The area remains a convenient place to stay in Frederick, offering access to highways, Hood College, and local shopping. The best movie theatre in Frederick (Warehouse Cinemas) is here as well.
