Most residents of Frederick know this but visitors might not: Frederick has a sneaky good winery scene. The wineries around Frederick make for great outings, and they are getting better all the time. Springfield Manor Winery is definitely one worth visiting.
Springfield Manor is actually more than just a winery. Its actually a winery, brewery, and distillery. This makes it a winner right off the bat with those couples that struggle with different tastes. Does you wife love wine, but you prefer to enjoy a craft beer outdoors? Springfield Manor makes for a great option.
The Spectacular Viewpoint at Springfield Manor Winery and Brewery
There are lots of things that make a winery or brewery a great outing, and this priority list differs depending on who you ask. But much of it is the overall experience: what is the setting like, the view, the vibe? What we tend to remember most about Springfield Manor (and what keeps us coming back) is that incredible setting and that stunning view.
Springfield Manor has the advantage of being on a elevated plateau with the Catoctin Mountains in the background. The winery is now an estate on an historic farm that looks out onto the Maryland countryside. If you are lucky, you’ll visit when the Lavender is in bloom, another focus of the venue which enhances the experience even more.

What To Drink? Lots of Options at Springfield Manor
As mentioned above, Springfield Manor is not just a winery. Its a Winery, Distillery, and Brewery and you can try all during a visit. This alone makes a great option for some couples. The wines are typical Maryland varietals, the Cabernet Franc and Chambourcin being most interesting to us during our visits.
The craft beer is solid as well, and I’d probably say is their strength. Our last visit was in fall and they were pouring a Marzen that was delicious and totally appropriate for the season. The brew master is definitely a creative one, lots of variety, fruity beers, darks, blondes, ambers, and IPAs.
Springfield is named for the aquifer on which it sits, which makes it ideal for producing spirits. Most notable is probably the Lavender Gin, but the Rye Whiskey is a winner as well.
There have been food trucks every time we’ve visited, but you can also get a solid charcuterie plate to match your beer and wine. There’s no need to complicate this, you main goal is getting a beverage, getting a great seat on that terrace, and start enjoying that view. Its a special spot, one of the best in the Frederick and Thurmont areas.
Lots of History and A Lot Going On
This fabulous estate has a sense of history. It’s more than a winery; the Inn at Springfield Manor is a place to stay or eat as well (it’s on Nicole and my to-do list). In fact, it’s one of the best places to stay near Frederick. This building is circa 1775 (James Johnson) and looks 100% 18th-century.
I have also stuck my head in the renovated farmhouse, which has a stunning event room that has clearly been significantly invested in. Hosting weddings and events is a big deal at Springfield Manor.
A Bucket List Spot for Frederick
Black Ankle Winery tends to be our go-to spot. But the history, setting, wine, beer, spirits, and view all make Springfield Manor a must-visit winery near Frederick if you are a visitor or resident.
One personal suggestion is to hit Springfield Manor on a Friday or Saturday evening 1 hour before sunset, enjoy a beverage or 2 on the terrace, take in the view, and then head to dinner in one of Frederick’s Restaurants. Perfect Evening!
