Sparks Lake from Ray Atkeson Loop Trail Bend Oregon

Anyone who lives or visits Bend will ultimately enjoy a whole series of stunning views and vistas.  The view of  South Sister Mountain and Broken Top across Sparks Lake is one of the best.  Probably the best way to experience this scene is by hiking the each Ray Atkeson Loop Trail

But there’s a lot of reasons this is a great hike besides the stunning views.  Its a relatively short, gentle, non-strenuous hike.  Its perfect when you are short on time, want to hike with small kids, or want a quick getaway after work.

This trailhead shares a parking lot with the main Sparks Lake Day Use Area and boat ramp.  Its named after Ray Atkeson, a notable Oregonian Landscape Photographer who was Oregon’s Photographer Laureate for many years.

Ray Atkeson Loop Trail Basics

Hiking This Stunning Sparks Lake Trail

When starting the hike look closely at the trail map and pick a game plan because there are 2 loops which can be done interchangeably.  We usually do both and recommend the same.

As mentioned, despite its short distance you will see a little of everything on this hike and be rewarded with some amazing views.  The first thing you’ll notice is the dense forest of lodgepole pines that are very characteristics of the Cascades Lakes region.

The other distinguishable feature especially in the first loop are the lava flows that result in interesting rock formations.  Sparks Lake was formed when eruptions from Mount Bachelor created rock dams of Soda Creek.

The highlight of the hike are the multiple viewpoints over Sparks Lake and the peaks behind.  South Sister and Broken Top are prominently featured in several of picturesque viewpoints behind the still lake.  Be sure to check out the Ray Atkinson favorite viewpoint (one of many along the way).

Sparks Lake water level various tremendously throughout the year.  Higher in spring, then lowers as it drains later in the year, this creates a series of meadows and islands that add to the colors and views.

The lake is noticeably calm and make its a great recreation lake.  You’ll likely see kayaks and SUP participants especially on weekends.  In fact if you are looking for another great outdoor outing around Bend, a kayak or SUP trip on Sparks Lake is highly recommended.

Have your camera ready and pick the perfect spot for an enduring picture of your party with Sparks Lake and the peaks behind.  Note you will also have views of Mount Bachelor towards the opposite side of the trail.  The entire hike took us almost 2 hours but that was significantly affected. by the many stops for views we took.
