Are you looking for another Frederick Brewery excursion to a farm setting with great beer, food options, and locally crafted cider as an option? Silly Yak Brewery is worth a visit. This farm brewery is about 30 minutes from downtown Frederick and is definitely worth the trip.
Gluten-Free Beer, Cider, and a Beautiful Farm Brewery
‘Gluten-Free’ has been thing since doctors started diagnosing celiac disease in the 1950s. But if you are like me, you probably never heard of the term until the last 5-10 years.
Today there is gluten-free everything: gluten-free foods, gluten-free groceries, gluten-free restaurants, and yes – gluten-free beer.
Tommy Evans started Silly Yak Brewery in 2020, and it is dedicated to producing gluten-free beer. If you are a beer lover and are immediately or even slightly turned off by the ‘gluten-free’ label, fear not. This beer is delicious.
This property (which contains a working orchard) is also home of the Two Story Chimney Ciderworks company, which produces gluten-free cider. They share a common production facility and tasting room.
The Silly Yak property is a beautiful farm setting just a few miles past Damascus. The simple white farmhouse serves as a tasting room with a bar and seating area. You can also sit outside on picnic benches, many of which are shaded.
During our recent visit, they poured their four basic beers: a blonde ale, IPA, amber ale, and session IPA. If cider is your thing, the Two Story Ciderworks serves from the same bar and offers flights.
Let’s not bury the lead: nothing about drinking any of these beverages said “gluten-free” to us. The beers and ciders both were delicious. If you are craft beer (or cider) lover, you’ll enjoy Silly Yak.
This brewery didn’t have a formal food menu, but there was local food truck there the day we visited serving burgers, and many guests had brought their own food as well. Check their facebook page for food truck schedules. Also, bring you dog!
