You simply want to satisfy your cravings or reward yourself with a killer meal on the weekend or after a hard week of work. Chances are it’s a burger or sandwich joint. Pretty Much Everyone's 'GoTo' Burger Place in Frederick
Maxwell’s Handcrafted Burgers & Shakes is a small burger joint on Patrick Street near the cluster of restaurants that includes Cafe Nola, Cacique, and Sabor de Cuba. It serves some of the best b urgers in town.
Maxwell’s is a creation by the owners of The Wine Kitchen on the Creek, one of the more upscale restaurants in Frederick. Despite being a burger restaurant, you get a sense of some of that sophistication at Maxwell’s. The menu includes Steakhouse Burgers, Wagyu Burgers, and both a Beet Burger and Impossible Burger as vegetarian options.
Maxwell’s is a popular spot and many Frederick residents’ ‘ go-to’ burger place, mainly because the food is exceptional. Besides burgers, they serve a Crispy Chicken Sandwich (highly recommended), a Tuna Burger, and salads. Both the Regular Fries and Sweet Potato Fries are above average.
While I have not tried them yet, Maxwell’s also serves ‘Nugs,’ or Chicken Nuggets, which several people in the dining room always seem to be eating.

More About the Maxwell's Burgers and Shakes Menu
When I crave Maxwell’s, I usually crave the burger. But the Shakes are a big draw as well. Maxwell’s serves up classic handspun shakes in ~8 flavors, including chocolate, vanilla, cookies & cream, strawberry, caramel, peanut butter cup, and Snickers. At our last visit, Nicole at the special shake of the month: a St. Patrick’s Day shake that tasted like cake batter.
As you would expect from a Wine Kitchen property, Maxwell’s also has adult beverages. In fact, you can get one of the shakes mentioned above as an ‘Adult Shake, ‘ which means it is made with bourbon. Maxwell’s has Clyde Mays and Benchmark Bourbons on the menu.
I prefer my burger and fries with beer, and Maxwell’s also takes care of this. In fact, they usually pour local brews. I had the Attaboy Backyard Hero during my last visit. There are always several other beers on tap, including Miller (not the lite version!).
Believe it or not, Maxwell’s is a burger joint that serves wine and cocktails. You can sip on tempranillo, sauvignon blanc, sparkling cava, or rose while you enjoy your burger and fries. Or you can get an old-fashioned, manhattan, or margarita.
You Might Have to Wait
There’s a price to pay for visiting a restaurant that is so popular with locals and has such a great menu of food and drinks. Maxwell’s is generally crowded in the evenings and weekends.
It’s a small place with only one row of tables and a small seating area with windows in the front.
But the host will take your name and get you seated as quickly as possible. Table service is a nice touch for a burger joint, and overall, the service is great at Maxwell’s. Alternatively, you can always order Maxwell’s takeout!
Maxwell's Burgers are WORTH the Wait
Make no mistake: a meal at Maxwell’s is worth the wait. These are next-level burgers made with Angus beef (sourced in Maryland) and on buns baked in-house.
The Wagyu burger is even better if you really want to treat yourself. You can build your burger to your liking, and when paired with Maxwell’s fries and a shake or beer, it’s hard to find a better burger meal in Frederick!
