This weekend, Nicole and I checked out one of the hottest new restaurants in Frederick, MD: Lima Soul. This exciting Peruvian spot in downtown is all over social media right now, and it did not disappoint.

Lima Soul is a place for flavors. We were lucky enough to have the owner guide us through some amazing dishes and cocktails, and it was special.

If you are looking for the next great Downtown Frederick dining experience, you need to visit yourself.

Several years ago, my kids and I took an unforgettable trip to hike the Inca Trail in Peru. There were many memorable aspects of the journey, including the town of Cusco, the richness of Peruvian culture, and, of course, Machu Picchu.

However, perhaps the most remarkable part of our experience was the cuisine. Peru offers incredible food! I’ve loved Peruvian food ever since.

Lima Soul Frederick, MD - Basics

Lima Soul is located in the heart of downtown Frederick on Patrick Street, just a block off North Market Street.

It’s adjacent to other popular restaurants, such as Sumittra Thai and JoJo’s. (Lima Soul occupies the building formerly home to Delizia Cafe.)

According to the owner, Antonio Poggi, when we visited in mid-May 2026, the restaurant was still considered in its ‘soft opening’ phase.

First Impressions of Lima Soul

Downtown Frederick is an underrated destination for great restaurants, and Lima Soul is a fantastic addition to the lineup.

Located on bustling Patrick Street, home to popular spots like Cafe Nola, Sumittra Thai, Lazy Fish, JoJo’s, and Sabor de Cuba, Lima Soul brings a delicious Peruvian focus to Frederick’s dining scene.

Lima Soul is similar to many downtown Frederick restaurants in that it is upscale enough for date night but casual without being overly fancy.

The Menu at Lima Soul Peruvian Restaurant

If you aren’t familiar with Peruvian cuisine, well, you need to. The Lima Soul menu brings these exciting flavors out in an aggressive way.

Peruvian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the world. Heavily influenced by indigenous, Spanish, and (as Antonio explained to us) early Japanese immigrants.

The Lima Soul menu is full on Peruvian, and here is what to expect:

Fresh seafood dishes
Latin flavors and spices
Lots of fresh citrus
Amazing ceviches
Flavorful grilled meats
Fresh Juices and handcrafted cocktails

The Lima Soul menu is very focused on starters, small plates, ceviches, and raw bar, plus a short list of entrees.

What We Ordered at Lima Soul

Luckily, we had Antonio to guide us through the menu and make recommendations.

I’m a huge fan of ceviches (and have incredible memories of the fresh ones in Peru). So we started with Trio Civichero. Fabulous!

The freshness and flavors of this dish cannot be overstated. In fact, I could have composed an entire meal at Lima Soul solely from ceviche and other raw fish dishes.

However, Antonio had more recommendations, so Nicole and I continued on to the Pulpo a la Parrilla con Chimichurri (grilled octopus – Nicole’s favorite), and the Lasana de Aji de Gallina.

Both dishes were delicious and authentically Peruvian. The octopus was succulent, complemented by a lima bean purée.

The lasagna was the most intriguing dish of the night. Made by Antonio himself, it featured layers of pasta filled with a traditional yellow chicken stew. It was unique and incredibly tasty.

We finished with dessert (volcano lava cake) :).

The Vibe at Lima Soul

It will take some time for Lima Soul to settle in and find its place in Frederick. But it’s already a cool place for a night out.

If you like to linger over dinner, slowly order small plates along with cocktails (including lots of pisco), then you’ll love Lima Soul.

In fact, the bar at Lima Soul is inviting in itself, and there were several couples eating there in a ‘chef’s table’ fashion.

The night we visited had a live music performer, but the place still had a dining room vibe only with some background music.

Antonio also explained that Lima Soul will eventually have a small Peruvian-focused market in the back, featuring products from Peruvian artists and food producers.

Final Verdit - Is Lima Soul Worth Visiting?

Nicole and I love dining in downtown Frederick, and the more cool restaurants we can add to our rotation, the better. Lima Soul Frederick is now on the list.

We’d highly recommend you do the same, especially if you have never tried authentic Peruvian cuisine. It will surprise you in a very delicious way.

1. Dutch's Daughter (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: Dutch’s Daughter is one of the most popular restaurants in Frederick and the proper steak restaurant in town. With a 40-year history in the area, if you are looking for the classic steak house meal, this is the place to go in Frederick.

The Dutch’s Daughter menu has all the classic cuts: filet mignon, NY strip, rib eye, and prime rib on the weekends. The appetizers, salads, and sides are amazing, and the wine list is quite good. Save room for dessert.

You can dine in any of Dutch’s Daughter’s multiple dining rooms, but we recommend you head to the basement area—Dutch’s Dungeon. This bar seating area has a better vibe (and the same menu).

2. Up on Market Bistro (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: This is another of our favorite restaurants in Frederick, but definitely not a proper steak house. Up on Market is more of a European bistro with a heavy emphasis on French food and wine.

While you can get a lot of French classics, like bourguignon and duck, it is one of the best places to get a steak in Frederick. The filet mignon with frites is fabulous, and there is also a rib eye, rack of lamb, several other meat dishes.

A big bonus of a steak dinner at Up on Market is the exquisite collection of French (including Bordeaux) wines on the wine list. Amazing!

Save room for dessert and try one of the unusual after-dinner drinks on the menu.

3. Wye Oak Tavern (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: Wye Oak Tavern burst onto the Frederick restaurant scene in December 2024 and immediately became a must-visit restaurant.

It’s the creation of celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio (a Frederick native) and the anchor restaurant at the new Visitation Hotel.

The menu at Wye Oak is fabulous. It’s fine dining with a local flare. You can take your meal in many different directions at Wye Oak Tavern, but there’s a heavy emphasis on beef and steak.

Their signature entree is prime rib, but you can also get an exquisite rib eye (from Roseda Farms), New York strip, or filet mignon. The starters, wine list, and desserts are top-notch. This is a special place!

4. Wilcom's Inn (Monrovia, MD)

Steak House Vibes: Wilcom’s Inn is 15 minutes outside downtown Frederick in Monrovia, but we’ve included it because it’s one of our go-to steak restaurants around Frederick.

Since we live close to Wilcom’s, we are regulars there and love this off-the-beaten-path secret restaurant!

Wilcom’s looks like a dive bar from the outside, but don’t be fooled. There’s a great menu and great food inside. The owners are Peruvian, which has a big influence on the menu. But the house specialty is steak.

Wilcom’s signature steakhouse entrees include Filet Mignon, Rib Eye, and New York Strip, all of which can be served with a crab cake and a variety of sides.

The wine list is sneaky good, with an especially good selection of international wines. Your server at Wilcom’s can probably recommend a few special bottles not on the menu.

5. The Wine Kitchen on the Creek (Frederick, MD)

Steak House Vibes: This is another of Frederick’s special occasion restaurants. The Wine Kitchen benefits from a stellar location right on Carroll Creek, and its menu is a wine-oriented fine dining creation with lots of creative flair.

There’s a variety of steak dishes, as well as appetizers and entrees that complement the wine (such as duck, paella, and gnocchi).

The Wine Kitchen also focuses on responsibly sourced beef, much of it local. For example, their New York Strip and Short Ribs come from Roseda Farms in Monkton, MD.

Of course, wine lovers will enjoy the domestic and internationally focused wine list, which is organized to encourage ordering ‘flights’ (sets of 3 tastes of wine).

We love the Wine Kitchen because it’s an upscale place in Frederick and often lively (a great bar for drinks in Frederick).

Plus, it’s so centrally located that you can stroll Carroll Creek before or after your meal or hit up another Frederick hot spot for another drink (try out the McClintock Back Bar!).

6. The Tasting Room (Frederick, MD)

Category: Modern

Why We Love It: We consider The Tasting Room one of the anchor restaurants in downtown Frederick. It’s located right in the heart, at the corner of Market and Church Street, and is one of the best fine-dining restaurants in Frederick.

The Tasting Room menu includes Filet Mignon, Flat Iron Steak, and Rib Eye. It also offers some of the best starters, salads, and sides of any upscale restaurant in town.

Add a top-rated wine menu, and you have all the ingredients for an amazing steak dinner.

Also, note that The Tasting Room has a great bar and is a fabulous place for cocktails. Make a reservation, especially on weekends.

What Makes a Great Steakhouse?

Nicole and I often debate about our favorite types of food, our favorite restaurants in Frederick, and where we want to eat at any particular time.

One thing we agree on is that there is nothing better than a steakhouse dinner or a high-end meal featuring steak.

Frederick is fortunate to have some great restaurants. A few are proper steak houses, and several others focus on a broader range of cuisine but are great places to get a steak.

So, what factors did we consider in ranking Frederick steak houses? Certainly, quality cuts of beef and the ability to prepare them just right (Nicole and I both love medium rare).

But other factors are essential:

Does a Great Steak Dinner Only Come from Steakhouses?

Another debate Nicole and I often have is whether you can only get a great steak dinner at a steakhouse (i.e., a restaurant primarily focused on steak).

My definitive answer is ‘no’. We are lucky to have some great steakhouses in Frederick (and actually some of the best steakhouses in Maryland), places like Dutchs Daughter in Frederick, which makes it clear from its menu that steak is its primary entree.

However, some of the best steaks in Frederick are served by restaurants such as Up on Market, Wye Oak Tavern, and The Wine Kitchen. These restaurants clearly emphasize beef entrees but have diverse menus with broader themes.

The Best Pupusas in Frederick, MD – Que Chivo

Pupusas — the thick, savory Salvadoran stuffed corn cakes – are one of Nicole and mine’s secret obsessions. I first had them on a business trip to El Salvador. We’ve had them many times since around D.C., including at D.C. United games at Audi Field.

It’s a dish you’re likely to buy from a food truck. However, we’ve discovered the place with the best pupusas in Frederick: a small Salvadoran joint named Que Chivo on the north side of town near Fort Detrick.

What Are Pupusas?

Pupusas are a distinctly Salvadorian dish that resembles a burrito, but is totally different. Pupusas are hand-made, flat cakes made from corn or flour, stuffed with goodness.

There are many types, but pupusas are most often stuffed with cheese, beans, or some kind of Latin-spiced meat (chicken, beef or pork).

It took us some time to find Que Chivo, it’s in an area of Frederick we don’t usually visit. You’ll find it on the north side of town near Fort Detrick:

The Best Place for Pupusas in Frederick

Frederick and the greater Washington, D.C. area, in general, have a large Salvadoran population.

So if you are a fan of Salvadoran food, and specifically Pupusas, you can find plenty of them in our area.

While our research is unscientific, Nicole and I believe we’ve found the best place for Pupusas near us at this somewhat unknown spot – Que Chivo.

Que Chivo is a creation of owners Alex Martinez-Hercules and Nelly Corvera, who founded the restaurant in October 2023. Popularity in the community keep trending up, mainly due to the quality of the service and food.

The Vibe at Que Chivo: Cozy and Colorful

When you walk into Que Chivo, you’re greeted by cheerful colors, a lively Latin vibe music, and a smiling service team.

Photos and decorations from El Salvador firmly establish the restaurant’s roots.

This is a casual eatery, that’s clean, cozy, and bright. It will likely be full of locals.

The Que Chivo Menu: Flavors from El Salvador and Mexico

The menu at Que Chivo has a combination of El Salvador and Mexican entrees, which all look inviting. The main dishes include items like Carne Asada, Fajitas Mixta, and Lomo Saltado.

You can also get a variety of tacos, in orders of 3. We ordered the Tacos Al Pastor (our favorite), which were delicious. They serve theirs with cucumber, radish, and lemon (not lime), which was an interesting twist.

Let’s be real: you come to Que Chivo for the pupusas. These handmade corn cakes are filled with gooey cheese, tender meats, and savory beans.

Served hot off the griddle and accompanied by tangy curtido and house-made salsa, they hit all the right notes.

We tried several, including:

Frijol con Queso (beans and cheese)
Pollo con Queso (chicken and cheese)
The Revuelta (mixed pork, beans, and cheese), hands down our favorite!

You can get these amazing pupusas with either corn or flour tortillas (we prefer corn, but you can’t go wrong with either).

Everything you order comes with a variety of house-made salsas, which you definitely don’t want to skip.

Plan Your Visit

Que Chivo is a casual place, just show up when hungry though it can be busy at peak times.

You can order takeout by ordering online.

There is a fantastic brunch menu, which we definitely plan to return and try.

While Que Chivo serves a variety of Latin-inspired soft drinks and juices (for example, sodas from Jarritos), it does not offer alcoholic beverages. Serving beer with this excellent El Salvadoran food is the only suggestion I have for improving the experience.

Final Verdict: Mucho Gusto

If you haven’t tried Pupusas before, you need to seek out this delicious creation from El Salvador.

With bold flavors, generous portions, and some of the best pupusas in Frederick, Que Chivo is a welcome addition to Frederick’s ever-growing food scene.

Nicole and I have always been impressed with the quality of the Italian restaurants in downtown Frederick. I’ve always believed it’s partly due to Frederick’s proximity to Baltimore, which has its own authentic Little Italy.

One of our favorite Italian restaurants in all of the Frederick area is Cucina Massi.

From handmade pasta to thoughtfully crafted entrées, Cucina Massi in Frederick, MD, delivers authentic Italian flavors with a modern touch in a warm, welcoming atmosphere—and it does so exceptionally well.

It’s a must-try Italian restaurant in Frederick.

Cucina Massi is in the heart of downtown Frederick, on Patrick Street about 2 blocks from North Market St. It’s on a strip of Partric that is home to several other of the best restaurants in Frederick.

Cucina Massi does not take reservations (maybe our biggest gripe with the place). If you are planning a weekend visit, plan on a wait!

The good news: there are plenty of places nearby to get a drink while you wait for your table. We often visit Tenth Ward Distilling next door.

The Vibe at Cucina Massi

Cucina Massi greets you as a downtown neighborhood trattoria that has probably been there for years.

It’s cozy and inviting, sectioned off into many rooms. You feel like you are dining in an intimate setting, regardless of where you are seated.

It’s upscale casual and by no means a ‘quiet’ fine-dining restaurant. It’s generally crowded and energetic on weekends.

The ambiance at Cucina Massi is perfect for date night, family or group gatherings, a night out in Frederick, or a special occasion dinner.

The Back Deck at Cucina Massi!

The main building has multiple dining rooms and a small but inviting bar right when you walk in. All of those are great places to eat at Cucina Massi.

But by far our favorite part of the restaurant is the back deck.

The back deck has its own bar and dining area, and dials up the character a few notches.

If the weather is nice enough for al fresco dining, we suggest you request a table in this section.

What to Order at Cucina Massi

Cucina Massi has a fabulous classic Italian “can’t go wrong” type menu. This is the type of place that makes ordering a series of tough decisions.

The cocktail and wine list at Cucina Massi is simple and solid.

I’ve had the classic Italian Campari Spritz, and Nicole has ordered several others, including The Tony Negroni. Both are delicious.

The Cucina Massi wine list is curated and simple, just enough to compliment the food. Don’t expect an extensive, worldly list of wines by the bottle.

But all the white and red Italians are covered by the glass or bottle: Pinot Grigio, Verdicchio, Chianti, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Starters You Can't Skip

You could make a great meal at Cucina Massi just on the wine and starters alone.

The ‘Spuntino’ menu includes classics like

Burrata Caponata (Nicole’s Favorite)
Mussels Gorgonzola
Meatballs (Glenn’s Favorite)

Hand-Made Pastas - The Reason You Visit a Restaurant Like This

You can get some excellent entrees at Cucina Massi. They serve Parmigiana, Picatta, and Marsala versions of both chicken and veal. I’ve had several and love them.

Their signature Massi version of chicken or veal is a dish of sauteed tomato, mozzarella, and shrimp. Definitely worth a try.

But let’s be real. There’s one main reason you visit a place like Cucina Massi: pasta.

The pasta dishes here are plentiful and outstanding. You have some tough choices, and at places like this, I usually go simple and stick to the basics.

Don't Sleep on the Pizza or Desserts

Maybe one of the most underated aspects of Cucina Massi is the pizza. Cucina Massi serves up some of the best pizza in Frederick.

Try the NIDO’s Favorite Recipe pizza: extra-virgin olive oil, garlic, and fontina cheese.

Regardless of which way you go with your dinner – entree, pasta, pizza – save room for dessert.

We always order the tiramisu and can’t recommend it highly enough.

Does Cucina Massi Take Reservations?

No! They do not take reservations, nor do they accept call ahead (believe me I’ve tried many times).

Expect to put your name on the list and wait on weekends.

Where Can I Park for Cucina Massi?

Cucina Massi is in downtown Frederick with no dedicated parking area.

However, parking in downtown Frederick is generally not bad. You can park on the street or the Carroll Creek garage is just around the corner.

Does Cucina Massi Have Happy Hour?

Yes! Happy Hour is Tuesday to Friday from 3:55 pm to 6:10 pm.

If you are a Frederick local, and Italian food is on your rotation (of course, it is), Cucina Massi should be as well.

1. Il Porto

Why We Love It: Il Porto is the Italian restaurant in Frederick that most reminds me of the ones in Baltimore’s Little Italy.

This cozy restaurant on Market Street on the north side of downtown is loved by Frederick locals who pack it every weekend.

Il Porto checks all the boxes for great Italian: fresh appetizers, incredible pasta dishes, great meat and seafood entrees, and an impressive Italian wine list.

They have regular specials and check out their Martini List, which is also somewhat of a specialty at Il Porto.

The restaurant has been run by the Cruz family in Frederick since 2007. They only take reservations by phone.

But it’s highly recommended that you call to secure one on weekends, as it gets busy!

2. Pistarro's

Why We Love It: Pistarro’s is another Italian restaurant in our regular rotation. It’s a place where we love to sit at the bar on weekends and enjoy simple Italian and red wine.

Pistarro’s has a more family-restaurant feel, partly because it serves some of Frederick’s best pizza and attracts many families. But don’t sleep in the Pistarro’s Italian entrees, especially anything with red sauce.

Also, I highly recommend the salads and the Napoletana Bread – simple wood-fired bread with olive oil and herbs. A great starter.

3. Cucina Massi

Why We Love It: The back terrace! Cucina Massi is right up there with the best Italian food in Frederick. But I’ll fully admit my favorite part about this restaurant is the somewhat secret back terrace.

The Cucina Massi menu of Italian food is tremendous. You can’t go wrong with their pastas, pizza, appetizers, salads, or entrees. It has a Maryland influence, with lots of Italian seafood dishes. Excellent wine list as well.

If you visit on a nice day, try dining on the back terrace. It has a totally different vibe and is a unique place to have a meal in downtown Frederick.

4. Ricci

Why We Love It: Ricci is an Italian Restaurant in the center of The Village at Worman’s Mill, a community on the north side of Frederick.

It took a while after we moved to Frederick for Nicole and me to finally try Ricci. But we were definitely impressed when we did!

It has an upscale feel, with many windows and a bright open concept. One end has a modern bar, but the dining room is a sleek restaurant, not a casual pizzeria.

The menu is also slightly elevated, full of Italian favorites – pasta classics, wood-fired pizza, salads, and a good wine list.

One bonus from many of the other Frederick Italian restaurants on this list: you can make a reservation at Ricci.

5. Manalu

Why We Love It: If you go by online reviews, Manalu might be the most popular Italian restaurant in Frederick. People love this place.

Unlike most of the other restaurants above, Manalu is not downtown but just south of town near Ballenger Creek.

Manalu’s chef focuses on dishes from his native Naples and does them well. The pasta and red sauce are tremendous, and the pizza might be the best thing on the menu.

There are lots of great fish, meat, and chicken dishes to try as well. Make a reservation on OpenTable, especially on weekends.

6. Fratelli's

Why We Love It: Despite being technically in Middletown, MD, 15 minutes up Route 40 from Frederick, Fratelli’s is another Italian restaurant near Frederick that gets rave reviews.

Have dinner there, and you’ll know why. The pasta and pizza are great at Fratelli’s, but I’d highly recommend their crab cakes, which are among the best in the area. It’s also a great place to get a steak.

It also has a tidy wine list, including the house Pinot Grigio, sourced locally from our friend Garry at Mazzaroth Vineyards.

7. Mangia e Bevi

Why We Love It: Nicole and I live in the Urbana, MD, direction of Frederick. We frequently discuss how Urbana has hardly any good restaurants despite being a growing suburb of both D.C. and Frederick.

Mangia E Bevi is an exception. This corner Italian restaurant has been in Urbana since 2007, giving those in this growing neighborhood a solid place for an Italian meal.

It has everything you want in an Italian restaurant – great pasta, salads, anti-pasta, and above-average pizza. I’m also impressed with their wine list.

Good place for carry out if you are in Urbana as well.

1. Frederick Coffee Company (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: There are sleeker, more quaint coffee shops in Frederick, but none we like better than Frederick Coffee Co. It’s one of our favorite places in Frederick to hang out.

Frederick Coffee Co. sits on a prominent corner at East Street and Church Street, and pretty much greets you into Frederick if you enter from Buckeystown Pike. It’s been serving coffee to Frederick residents since 1991.

The coffee is excellent (they have their own brand), and the food menu is even better. In fact, it’s a great place to get a sandwich for lunch.

2. Gravel and Grind (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This is another coffee shop in Frederick that we consider a landmark, and a place Nicole and I visit frequently.

Gravel and Grind is a unique concept because it’s not only a great coffee shop but also a bike shop (and we love coffee and biking!).

G&G is one of the most popular breakfast spots in Frederick, known for serving creative dishes, especially their loaded toasts. For example, the Nutella and Orange Blossom Fluff or Almond Butter w/ Banana Toast.

The coffee is also excellent. Gravel and Grind uses ChocoSombra coffee, a local Frederick coffee roaster.

If you are visiting on weekends, get there early as it gets crowded fast.

3. Dublin Roasters Coffee (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: If you polled Frederick residents, this would probably be the #1 Frederick coffee shop. Locals LOVE this place.

The cafe interior looks like an industrial warehouse. People mostly come for the fantastic coffee, baked goods, and sense of community that Dublin has built. Every time we visit, it feels like it’s filled with regulars.

Dublin is big on sustainability, and its coffee sourcing is based on these principles.

4. Juno Bakery and Cafe (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Juno Bakery burst onto the scene right in the heart of downtown Frederick in 2024 and has quickly become a must-visit destination for dessert and baked goods lovers.

Juno Bakery is a Korean-inspired corner of deliciousness, featuring a variety of baked wonders, including Korean breads, macaroons, cakes, cookies, and more. They also serve excellent coffee drinks and boba tea.

If you enjoy pairing your coffee with something sweet, this is the perfect coffee spot in Frederick for you!

5. The Station Market and Cafe (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This charming cafe, located on the north side of downtown on Bentz St, is a hidden gem in Frederick, perfect for coffee and pastries.

The coffee is excellent, and they also have a wide selection of gluten-free treats if that’s important to you.

The cafe is an offshoot of Eaters Acres Farm, a working local farm located just outside Frederick.

This connection allows The Station to offer a fantastic menu of farm-to-table sandwiches, soups, and dishes, making it an ideal lunch spot in Frederick.

6. Paris Baguette (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Have you ever been to an authentic bakery in Paris or France? Nicole and I have, and it’s life-changing.

Frederick residents can now get a taste of this experience at Paris Baguette on the north side of town.

This neighborhood bakery-cafe offers next-level baked goods (croissants, pastries, breads, desserts) and European coffee drinks.

(I’ve broken my own rule because technically this is a chain venue, but believe me, it’s worthy of being on this list).

7. Market Street Boba and Beans (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: If you’re shopping in downtown Frederick and need a quick coffee break, Market Street Boba & Beans is the perfect spot.

Located in the heart of downtown on Market Street, between Patrick and Church streets, it’s right in the midst of all the action.

Although it’s a small establishment, their espresso drinks are excellent, and you can often find a table to rest your feet. The front window tables are especially nice for people-watching!

8. Ibiza Cafe (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: If your heart longs for the charm of quirky, tucked-away locations, Ibiza Cafe is a must-visit.

Nestled on the north side of downtown Frederick, Nicole and I love this place.

Here you step into a cozy nook where the aroma of freshly brewed pour-over coffees in the air, inviting you to savor flavors from distant lands. The selection of loose-leaf black teas is a delightful adventure in itself.

You can even get a beer or a mimosa at Ibiza. This funky little coffee shop offers not just drinks, but a warm atmosphere that makes every visit feel special.

Bonus Spot: Baltimore Coffee and Tea Co.

Why We Love It: Most of the spots on this list are in downtown Frederick. But not this place. Baltimore Coffee and Tea is in the Ballenger Creek district of Frederick, a more suburban area south of town.

Nicole and I have frequented this coffee shop many times because we are often in Ballenger Creek for various reasons, and it’s an excellent coffee shop.

Baltimore Coffee Co. focuses as much on coffee and tea sales as it does on serving brewed coffee. You can buy 100+ varieties of each in this well-stocked store.

But it’s a great place to grab a coffee, tea, and a snack.

Frederick's Coffee Scene - A Quick Overview

Frederick’s historic downtown, growing suburbs, and surrounding communities now host a diverse mix of coffee vendors.

In downtown Frederick, you’ll find third‑wave roasters, cozy neighborhood cafés, and espresso bars that compete well with bigger cities.

Most of the Frederick coffee shops on this list are in downtown Frederick.

While these picks focus on Frederick city proper, there are plenty of non-chain coffee shops in Frederick’s suburbs worth exploring.

1. The BackSlash Burger (Frederick, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: It was big news to many of us in Frederick when, in February 2026, this establishment rebranded. What used to be Fifty-Fifty Burger is now BackSlash Burger.

Worry not, Nicole and I have already tried the rebranded BackSlash Burger, and they are still the best in Frederick.

In fact, we rank BackSlash Burger as one of the best places to eat in Frederick, period. BackSlash burgers are still made from 50% beef and 50% bacon, and this combination makes for incredibly delicious burgers.

BackSlash also has lots of other things going for it. The Old Bay Fries are very Maryland and very delicious.

Plus, BackSlash sits at the back of Olde Mother Brewing, one of our favorite breweries in Frederick. So you can enjoy your burger with fries and any of several craft beers.

So, if you are looking for a great burger in Frederick, it starts and ends with BackSlash.

2. Maxwell's Large Maxx Burger (Frederick, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: This is another Frederick Burger joint that has it all. Maxwell’s Burgers on Patrick Street in downtown Frederick serves up incredible burgers, multiple types of fries, handspun shakes (including ‘adult shakes’), and craft beers.

Maxwell’s is a creation of another Frederick restaurant staple, The Wine Kitchen on the Creek. It’s a popular place, and with a small, narrow dining room, it often has a wait.

But the wait is well worth it. The burgers are made from locally sourced Angus beef, and you can also opt for a Wagyu burger.

While I haven’t tried them, several other options are on the menu, such as a crispy chicken sandwich and a tuna burger.

When paired with Max fries or sweet potato fries and a shake or craft beer, a burger meal doesn’t get much better.

3. The Garage Smash Burger (Frederick, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: Nicole and I discovered this hidden gem of a restaurant in Frederick on a rainy Saturday and have loved it ever since.

The Garage is located in an obscure spot in an ndustrial park near the Frederick airport, very close to Dragon Distillery.

The Garage is better known for its wood-oven pizzas, but I believe the best thing on its menu is the burger.

The Garage also serves fries and ‘tator’ tots, and when paired with a local craft beer, you have one of the best burger meals in Frederick.

You are just as likely to see The Garage food truck around town in Frederick. Either way, it’s a must-try!

4. Bentztown Smashed Butcher Burger (Frederick, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: Bentztown emerged as the hottest new restaurant in Frederick in 2024, making a splash as a Nashville-themed music venue and Southern food venue.

Bentztown has a lot to love- a great bar, elevated comfort food menu, and a consistent string of musical acts playing on its stage. We rate it as one of the best bars in Frederick; check out the cocktail menu and the whiskey flights.

We recently tried the Smashed Butcher Burger on the Bentztown menu, and it delivers! A burger and beer at the Bentztown bar is quickly becoming one of the best meal experiences in town.

5. Hootch and Banter The "Kidd" Prime Burger (Frederick, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: Hootch and Banter is Frederick’s ultimate sandwich-and-beer joint. Prime location, cool bar, and a sandwich menu that includes its signature dish – The Banter (corn beer).

But H&B also serves a great burger. The “Kidd” Prime Burger is large, juicy, and most notable for the wood-smoked bacon piled high. The ketchup that accompanies the fries is homemade.

The biggest problem you’ll have with Hootch and Banter is getting a table. It’s hugely popular and not a large place.

But make it happen! Get a spot at the bar and order a burger and beer. Frederick, Maryland, heaven!

6. White Rabbit Gastropub Smash Burger (Frederick, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: One of our favorite dining experiences in Frederick is visiting the White Rabbit Gastropub, tucked away in downtown Frederick—a pub atmosphere full of character, most known for their Detroit-style pizza.

The pizza is fantastic, but don’t sleep on the White Rabbit Smash Burger. Fully customizable, you can get as many patties piled on as your server will allow (I usually get two).

Paired with the fries (Old Bay) and a local craft beer, it probably could be ranked higher on this list.

7. Wilcom's Inn Wilcom's Burger (Monrovia, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: Wilcom’s Inn is a joint 15 minutes east of Frederick near Monrovia. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much. But wow, do we love this place.

Wilcom’s is maybe the sneakiest good restaurant in the Frederick area. It is mostly known for its steaks, Peruvian food, and surprisingly great wine list.

But there’s a decent bar, and visiting Wilcom’s for the Wilcom’s Burger, Fries, and a beer is a favorite weekend activity of mine.

I do it regularly after playing at one of the many Frederick area golf courses.

8. Brewers Alley Original Alley Burger (Frederick, MD)

What Makes This Burger Joint Great: Most breweries that serve food serve up burgers.

Brewer’s Alley is one of Frederick’s premier breweries and a full-service bar and restaurant in the heart of downtown. And you can get a great burger there!

There is both The Original Alley Burger and a Double Smash Burger on the menu, and both are solid. Customize it however you want (the Smash comes with an interesting Jalapeño Bacon jam), and pair it with one of their craft beers!

I’d recommend sitting on the top deck of Brewer’s Alley when the weather permits. One of the cool spots in downtown Frederick!

We Love Our Hamburgers and Cheeseburgers

We love our hamburgers and cheeseburgers here in the US. A quick search shows that Americans consume fifty billion burgers a year, almost 3 per person per week (!).

It’s no wonder burger joints are so popular, and why cheeseburgers and smashburgers are so prominent on restaurant menus.

You can get a burger in virtually every restaurant in Frederick.

Serving a great burger meal or establishing a burger restaurant may seem simplistic. Grill up burgers, serve with fries and drinks. How hard can it be?

But a truly special burger meal takes more nuance and effort.

I believe Frederick’s Italian restaurants have benefited from our close proximity to Baltimore.

Baltimore has one of the best Little Italy Neighborhoods in the US, and this has been a major influence on the quality of the Italian food in Frederick.

1. Il Porto (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Il Porto is the Italian restaurant in Frederick that most reminds me of the ones in Baltimore’s Little Italy.

This cozy restaurant on Market Street on the north side of downtown is loved by Frederick locals who pack it every weekend.

Il Porto checks all the boxes for great Italian: fresh appetizers, incredible pasta dishes, great meat and seafood entrees, and an impressive Italian wine list.

They have regular specials and check out their Martini List, which is also somewhat of a specialty at Il Porto.

The restaurant has been run by the Cruz family in Frederick since 2007. They only take reservations by phone.

But it’s highly recommended that you call to secure one on weekends, as it gets busy!

2. Pistarro's (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Pistarro’s is another Italian restaurant in our regular rotation. It’s a place where we love to sit at the bar on weekends and enjoy simple Italian and red wine.

Also, I highly recommend the salads and the Napoletana Bread – simple wood-fired bread with olive oil and herbs. A great starter.

Part of the greatness of Italian food is its simplicity. However, several elements have come together to make a great Italian restaurant.

For me, here are the factors used to rank the Italian Restaurants in Frederick in this list:

Like most cuisines, Italian restaurants that shine are those that focus on fresh ingredients, authentic recipes (traditional, family, or generational), and the classics.

When going out for Italian food, most people already have their favorites or their ‘go-to’ dishes.

For me, it’s eggplant parmesan. I rarely go to an Italian Restaurant wanting to ‘try something new or innovative’.

I’m usually looking for a fresh salad, a pasta dish with amazing tomato sauce, and an Italian red wine (Chianti Classico, Montepulciano, Barolo, or similar).

Dessert is usually a must.

Nicole and I have lived in Frederick for years, and visiting restaurants is one of our favorite things to do. We’ve eaten virtually everywhere in this town, so this article is our honest ranking of the Best Restaurants in Frederick, MD.

The Frederick, MD, restaurant scene is highly underrated and often overshadowed by its D.C. and Baltimore neighbors.

But for a town its size, the diversity of places to eat in Frederick is tremendous, and new Frederick restaurants seem to always be popping up.

1. Wye Oak Tavern (Frederick, MD)

Upscale – Voltaggio – Downtown – Washington Post Ranked – Special Occasion

Why We Love It: It’s only been a little more than a year since the December 2024 opening of the Wye Oak Tavern at the brand new Visitation Hotel in downtown Frederick. But the hype and buzz are still there.

Wye Oak Tavern is a creation of celebrity chefs and Frederick’s own Bryan and Michael Voltaggio. It’s an upscale restaurant whose prominent feature is not just its menu, but its location in what was once a monastery’s chapel. The bar, for example, is built around the former altar (!?).

The former sacred aspects of the restaurant are a huge part of the dining experience. But the bar, food menu, and service are stellar. The menu is varied, with a focus on beef and steaks, and a big emphasis on local.

I noticed recently that Wye Oak made Tom Sietsema’s 2025 Top 40 Restaurants in Around D.C.

Nicole and I have returned there several times, and can personally confirm we are lucky to have this restaurant in Frederick!

2. Up on Market Bistro (Frederick, MD)

French Bistro – Brunch – Steak – Wine – Downtown

Why We Love It: Up on Market has plenty to love, especially if you like French- or European-style bistros. It’s set in a historic building at the north end of Market Street and has been transformed into a bistro that looks very Parisian.

The menu has exquisite French classics like duck, bourguignon, and moules (mussels). It may also be the best place to get a steak in Frederick, as the filet mignon with frites is divine.

The French-inspired wine list and unique offering of aperitifs and digestifs make it an even more enjoyable place to dine. It also has a fabulous brunch on the weekends.

Nicole and I adore this place, and we always try to get Francis, the owner/operator, to serve us (and recommend you do the same). His life-story only enhances the experience!

Up on Market is jointly run with Inn on Market, a four-room inn that’s one of the best places to stay in Frederick.

3. BackSlash Burger (Frederick, MD)

Burgers – Fries – Brewery – Downtown

Why We Love It: It may be odd to have a burger joint this high on the list, especially one in the back of a brewery.

But this is truly one of our favorite dining experiences in Frederick. Of the many places to get a burger in Frederick, the best is BackSlash Burger.

The fact that you can pair it with craft beer from Olde Mother Brewing (Fifty Fifty is in the back of this top-rated Frederick brewery) only makes it better.

Many of you may know BackSlash from its previous name – Fifty Fifty Burger. They rebranded in February 2026. Yes, they still serve the same great smashburgers.

BackSlash also has excellent chicken sandwiches, and a MUST order is the Old Bay Fries. Enjoy!

4. White Rabbit Gastropub (Frederick, MD)

Gastropub – Pizza – Craft Beer – Cocktails – Downtown

Why We Love It: The most difficult part of eating at White Rabbit is finding the place (it’s tucked away 1/2 block off Market Street) and getting a table (no reservations). But once you are there, dining at White Rabbit is one of the best experiences in Frederick.

White Rabbit accurately describes itself as a Gastropub. It has a pub atmosphere, with an interesting beer list and killer cocktails.

But it also serves restaurant-worthy food, including delicious appetizers, salads, and sandwiches (including a great burger).

As locals know, White Rabbit’s forte is pizza, and their Detroit-style pizza is some of the best pizza you can find in Frederick.

In fact, one of Nicole’s and my favorite things to do on a night out in Frederick is to secure two seats at the upstairs bar at White Rabbit (one of the best bars in Frederick).

I usually indulge in some interesting craft beer while she has cocktails, but we both enjoy their fabulous Detroit-style pizza. It’s a must-do in Frederick!

5. The Wine Kitchen on the Creek (Frederick, MD)

Upscale – Date Night – Wine Focused – Carroll Creek

Why We Love It: This is another of Frederick’s special occasion restaurants. The Wine Kitchen on the Creek benefits from a stellar location right on Carroll Creek, and its wine-oriented fine-dining concept with plenty of creative flair.

There’s a variety of steak dishes, as well as other appetizers and entrees that pair well with the wine (like duck, paella, and gnocchi).

Of course, wine lovers will enjoy the internationally focused wine list, which is organized to encourage ordering ‘flights’ (sets of 3-4 tastes of wine).

We love the Wine Kitchen because it’s an upscale place in Frederick and often lively (a great bar for drinks in Frederick).

Plus, it’s so centrally located that you can stroll Carroll Creek before or after your meal or hit up another Frederick hot spot for another drink (try out the McClintock Back Bar!).

6. Bentztown (Frederick, MD)

Gastropub – Nashville-Theme – Live Music – Southern Cuisine

Why We Love It: Bentztown opened in 2024 in Frederick and is already one of our favorites.

It’s a creation of the owners of Monocacy Brewing and Brewer’s Alley, with a Nashville/Music City theme that combines a great bar, upscale Southern food, and live performances.

There are delicious modern Southern appetizers and entrees, but the sandwiches seem the most popular, and for good reason. Handhelds like the smoked BBQ brisket, nasty hot chicken, and smash burger are the stars of this gastropub.

A plethora of cocktails, whiskeys, draft beers, and even bourbon flights make this a great drinks venue. Check out the events schedule and possibly visit on an afternoon or evening when a local band is playing.

7. Hootch and Banter (Frederick, MD)

Gastropub – Cozy Vibe – Cocktails – Brunch – Downtown

Why We Love It: As a Frederick resident, the problem with building a list like this is that you have so many favorite places. For example, Hootch and Banter could easily be my favorite place in Frederick to go for a drink and a meal.

H&B is small but packs a large punch. The menu includes some of the best sandwiches in town (try The Banter 2.0 – corned beef), and also some great elevated pub entrees.

It has one of my favorite bars in town (it’s small, so fight for a seat). It serves creative cocktails and a wide selection of local beers.

Because it is small, centrally located, and doesn’t take reservations, getting a table or a seat at the bar at H&B makes any day feel like a special day.

8. Il Porto (Frederick, MD)

Italian – Trattoria – Pasta – Wine – Downtown

Why We Love It: Frederick residents and visitors can get a taste of Little Italy without going all the way to Baltimore at Il Porto, Frederick’s best Italian restaurant.

Il Porto serves up traditional Italian in a casual environment on the south side of downtown.

This place is packed on weekends, with diners enjoying pasta, specials like Rockfish and Ossobucco, and lots of red Italian wine. The classics like lasagna and eggplant parm are fabulous.

It’s a ‘can’t miss’ menu, and you can return for many meals without ordering the same thing.

Save room for dessert – fabulous tiramisu and cannoli!

9. The Tasting Room (Frederick, MD)

Modern – Upscale – Date Night – Downtown

Why We Love It: We consider The Tasting Room one of the anchor restaurants in downtown Frederick. It’s located right in the heart of the city, at the corner of Market and Church Street, and is one of the best fine-dining restaurants in Frederick.

Open since 2000, The Tasting Room is rivaled by only a few places in Frederick for the sophistication of its food and wine menu (The Wine Kitchen is probably most similar).

The bar and cocktails list alone are worth visiting, and while somewhat small, it’s one of the best places to get a cocktail in downtown Frederick.

After some remodeling in 2024, the dining room is also more modern and stylish than ever. The giant windows overlooking downtown Frederick make it one of the city’s best places for fine dining.

10. The Garage (Frederick, MD)

Hidden Gem – Pizza – Burgers – Casual – Trendy

Why We Love It: The Garage is one of those off-the-beaten-path places that you find and make your hometown amazing.

It’s located in an industrial area near the airport, close to Dragon Distillery, and not in a heavily trafficked area where people are looking for pizza or beer.

But once discovered, it’s immediately on your regular rotation of restaurants.

Their specialty is pizza, which they cook in their wood-fired oven, producing many interesting creations (such as the Farrell – white sauce, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and truffle oil).

But our recommended Epic Meal is the burger. In fact, the Garage may have the best burger in Frederick, and when paired with a craft beer and their Old Bay Fries, you have just discovered one of the best eating experiences in Frederick.

11. Dutch's Daughter (Frederick, MD)

Vintage – Steakhouse – Traditional – Upscale Bar

Why We Love It: This is another Frederick restaurant that could be much higher on the list. Dutch’s Daughter is probably the most popular restaurant in Frederick, and if you’ve been there for a steak dinner, you know why.

Dutch’s has a 40-year history in the area and has built its reputation by serving signature steaks, crab cakes, and everything else that makes a steakhouse great.

The Dutch’s Daughter menu also includes a great wine list and some delectable desserts.

Dutch’s Daughter is a big restaurant with multiple dining rooms. For the best vibe, we recommend you try it at Dutch’s Dungeon, the basement bar. You definitely want to make a reservation (by phone only).

12. Showroom (Frederick, MD)

Modern – Voltaggio – Lunch/Brunch – Southern Diner

Why We Love It: Showroom is another special restaurant in Frederick. A versatile spot, it’s a premier brunch restaurant in Frederick and excellent for lunch or dinner as well.

Showroom is another Bryan Voltaggio creation (Wye Oak Tavern), and the theme is ‘modern American’. It’s undergone a few name changes; some residents probably remember it as Family Meal until it was rebranded in 2021.

Showroom is set up like a diner. In fact, our favorite way to enjoy it is at the counter.

The food is upscale Southern diner food. There are some killer appetizers like deviled eggs and cheddar chive biscuits, and entrees like fried half chicken and meatloaf.

Showroom has one of the best brunch menus in town. The chicken & waffles and biscuits with sausage gravy are fantastic. Oh…Showroom serves alcohol, including ‘adult milkshakes‘!

13. Cucina Massi (Frederick, MD)

Italian – Local – Trattoria – Red Wine – Downtown

Why We Love It: The back terrace! Cucina Massi is another excellent Italian restaurant in Frederick that evokes Little Italy in Baltimore.

It serves all the classics with some Maryland influence (Linguini with Crab Meat).

But what we love most about this place is the back terrace.

In nice weather, you can opt to dine in the very back of the restaurant, outside on this lovely terrace tucked away in the middle of downtown Frederick. It has a great vibe and is one of the best dining experiences in town.

But don’t sleep on the food at Cucina Massi. I’ve had the lasagna, eggplant parm, and margarita pizza. They are all fabulous, and there’s a great list of Italian wines to enjoy.

14. Tsunami Ramen (Frederick, MD)

Asian – Eclectic – Ramen – Cocktails – Downtown

Why We Love It: Ramen is often associated with cheap food that college kids eat, and finding delicious gourmet ramen can be hard. But you can find tasty and creative ramen at Tsunami Ramen right in downtown Frederick.

It’s an eclectic place with colorful Asian decor and an interesting menu, featuring Asian-themed appetizers and creative cocktails that incorporate ingredients like shochu, a Japanese spirit.

The ramen is the star of the show, and they offer a variety of flavorful ramen dishes featuring chicken, pork, or vegetables. There are classic Japanese-style flavors, as well as several spicy curry ramen options.

We don’t get takeout very often, but when we do, we often get Tsunami ramen takeout to eat at home.

15. Maxwell's Burgers & Shakes (Frederick, MD)

Burgers – Shakes – Fries – Beers – Downtown

Why We Love It: Frederick is lucky to have several great burger joints in town, and one of the best is Maxwell’s.

Located on Patrick St, a few blocks from Market, Maxwell’s does burgers, fries, shakes, and adult beverages right. It’s one of our ‘go-to’ places for a no-decision-making meal in Frederick.

Maxwell’s is a creation of Wine Kitchen on the Creek (the same owners). The Steakhouse Burgers and Waygu Burger are tremendous, and when paired with Maxwell’s fries or tater tots and a shake, it’s a slam-dunk meal.

Maxwell’s also serves wine and beer, including local favorite Attaboy beer.

Don’t sleep on the Chicken Sandwich or WK Fish O Filet. Vegans will appreciate that all burgers can be made Impossible.

The Frederick Maryland Restaurant Scene

One of the things that attracted both Nicole and me to Fredrick was the vibrant restaurant and bar scene, especially downtown.

After many years living in the area, we have a long list of Frederick eateries we rotate through regularly.

Frederick is growing, and new restaurants are consistently opening in the area. We love being early visitors to a new place in town.

One of the prime contributors to Frederick’s upscale culinary scene is celebrity chef Bryan Voltaggio (Wye Oak Tavern and Showroom). But you can just as easily find great pizza or a delicious burger in Frederick.

Note that this list mostly includes Downtown Frederick Restaurants. Most of our favorites and best restaurants in Frederick are in the downtown area along Market Street.

A few places on the list, such as Dutch’s Daughter, The Garage, and Ricci, are located in the outlying neighborhoods of Frederick and are definitely worth checking out.

What Criteria Do We Use in Rankings?

We rank restaurants based on the overall dining experience (which admittedly is highly subjective). But in no particular order, here are the criteria for a great dining experience:

The Food Menu and Quality of Food
The Drink Menu and Quality of Drinks (wine list, beer list, cocktail list)
The Restaurant’s Overall Vibe
Dining Area, with a bonus for Outdoors
The Service
Local Ingredients – Local Meat, Produce, Wines, Beers, Spirits (very important to us)

Changes in the Frederick Restaurant Scene Going Into 2026

As in most years, Frederick had several restaurant openings and closings in 2025. The Ordinary Hen, which replaced local favorite Thacher and Rye in 2024, closed in 2025.

A new restaurant (7th Sister) has opened in the same building, led by Chef Christian Blouin, who was previously at Firestone’s Tavern.

Speaking of Firestone’s, its previous prominent location at the corner of N. Market and Church St. has a new venue. Fire and Oak Culinary Tavern opened in December 2025 and has a similar vibe.

Nicole and I are passionate about discovering unique places and sharing them with our readers on this site. We have many favorite restaurants in Frederick and the surrounding area, and we are always happy to spread the word about them.

However, there are occasionally some special places that make me hesitate. I find myself questioning whether I truly want to share this hidden gem with the world.

Writing about Market Table Bistro in Lovettsville, VA, evokes that feeling for me.

You’ll have to drive 30 minutes from Frederick into Loudoun County to visit Market Table Bistro. But trust us on this one – its worth it.

Market Table Bistro is located in the charming town of Lovettsville, Virginia, in Loudoun County. Lovettsville is about 5 minutes south of the Potomac River after crossing in Brunswick.

Why Do We Consider This Restaurant So Special?

I first discovered Market Table Bistro in 2016 on a visit for brunch while on an outing in Loudoun County. The restaurant had gotten some recent acclaim from The Washington Post.

I usually cross-check all restaurant recommendations on TripAdvisor, which we also refer to on all our recommendations on this site. I know people have mixed opinions on TripAdvisor ratings, but I find it a good resource.

Back in 2016, my kids and I checked out Market Table Bistro for brunch while on a weekend outing, and it immediately became one of our favorite restaurants.

Nicole and I have returned many times since, including this week when we made a special trip for a Saturday date night.

Why do we love it so much? It fulfills so many aspects of what makes an ideal restaurant experience for Nicole and me:

Local Focus: use of local ingredients, produce, meat, and wine enhances the connection to the region.
Upscale Yet Delicious Dishes: The constantly evolving menu is exciting and creative.
“Just Right” Wine List: The selection features both local and international wines, striking a perfect balance without being overwhelming.
Great Cocktails: Need we say more?
A Unique Atmosphere: This restaurant boasts character and charm, in a small-town setting.

The Vibe at Market Table Bistro

Market Table Bistro is so unassuming, its hard to find. During our visit last week, I noticed that they don’t even have a sign out front anymore.

This does not make it any less charming. The indoor dining room is cozy and modern. The kitchen and prep area feels like its next to you, but in an approachable way.

There’s interesting artwork from locals adorning most walls. What was once a patio area is now enclosed, creating a bright secondary dining section.

Cocktails, Beers, and a 'Just Right' Wine List

As far as the menu, starting with beverages, MTB gets a lot right. The main dining room cocktail menu is not extensive, but always has options for gin, bourbon, vodka, and tequila cocktails to choose from.

We tried the Thyme to Chill gin-based cocktail at our last visit.

(There’s a more extensive cocktail list in their new lounge, described in more detail below).

The beer menu spans from Virginia and Pennsylvania to destinations across the globe.

You can opt for a local craft beer or something interesting and European, such as Estrella Galicia Lager (especially if you are having seafood).

Nicole and I usually order wine at MTB, and their wine list has plenty to choose from without burdening you with a bible to flip through.

The MTB wine list features a mix of old and new world wines that are both reasonable and interesting, while also incorporating some local Virginia wines.

(Loudoun County wines are surprisingly good; Maryland is trying to catch up.)

The Market Table Bistro Menu

Dining at Market Table Bistro is an exceptional experience. The menu presents a thoughtfully curated selection of appetizers and entrées that are not only creative and unique but also approachable and inviting. I often find it difficult to choose.

On our most recent visit, we savored The Tasting of School Hill Garden Tomatoes, featuring three exquisite starters crafted from locally sourced tomatoes: a refreshing gazpacho, crispy fried green tomatoes, and a vibrant salad. Each very fresh, and full of flavor.

For entrees, Nicole chose the Misty Meadow Farm Mushroom Tostada, an earthy vegetarian dish with local mushrooms. I had the Thai Curry Seafood entree.

Hard to recommend one over the other. The menu usually includes chicken, pork, and a steak entree as well. Choose your wine accordingly.

The Newly Renovated Cocktail Lounge

In previous visits to MTB, we have occasionally been seated in the alternate dining room at the front of the house. During this visit, I noticed that it has been renovated into a trendy cocktail lounge.

There’s also a new cocktail list that completes the room into a very cool hangout, which I only wish was closer to my home.

Make A Day Out of Visiting Loudoun County

Market Table Bistro will require you to travel anywhere from twenty to forty minutes, depending on where you live in Frederick. But as mentioned, trust us- it’s worth an outing.

However, we also recommend making a day of it. Loudoun County is filled with charming wineries, breweries, farms, and other attractions that can easily make for a great day trip from Frederick.

Here are some of our favorites:

Wheatland Spring – A dreamy farm brewery. Great beer and lovely setting.
Breaux Vineyards – Stunning winery with great wine and fabulous views.
Stone Tower Winery – Maybe the best wine in Loudoun, and a great winery visit experience.
Middleburg, VA – Charming town in the center of Virginia horse country. (Also where we were married!)

A great outing is to visit a few Loudoun wineries or small towns, then end your day at Market Table Bistro for dinner on the way back to Frederick.

Final Thoughts and Considerations

If you’ve read this far, it’s clear Market Table Bistro is a special restaurant for Nicole and me. We highly recommend you check it out.

But shhhhhssssss, let’s not tell too many Marylanders! Let’s keep this place a secret amongst the EpicFrederick community.
