This weekend, Nicole and I checked out one of the hottest new restaurants in Frederick, MD: Lima Soul. This exciting Peruvian spot in downtown is all over social media right now, and it did not disappoint.

Lima Soul is a place for flavors. We were lucky enough to have the owner guide us through some amazing dishes and cocktails, and it was special.

If you are looking for the next great Downtown Frederick dining experience, you need to visit yourself.

Several years ago, my kids and I took an unforgettable trip to hike the Inca Trail in Peru. There were many memorable aspects of the journey, including the town of Cusco, the richness of Peruvian culture, and, of course, Machu Picchu.

However, perhaps the most remarkable part of our experience was the cuisine. Peru offers incredible food! I’ve loved Peruvian food ever since.

Lima Soul Frederick, MD - Basics

Lima Soul is located in the heart of downtown Frederick on Patrick Street, just a block off North Market Street.

It’s adjacent to other popular restaurants, such as Sumittra Thai and JoJo’s. (Lima Soul occupies the building formerly home to Delizia Cafe.)

According to the owner, Antonio Poggi, when we visited in mid-May 2026, the restaurant was still considered in its ‘soft opening’ phase.

First Impressions of Lima Soul

Downtown Frederick is an underrated destination for great restaurants, and Lima Soul is a fantastic addition to the lineup.

Located on bustling Patrick Street, home to popular spots like Cafe Nola, Sumittra Thai, Lazy Fish, JoJo’s, and Sabor de Cuba, Lima Soul brings a delicious Peruvian focus to Frederick’s dining scene.

Lima Soul is similar to many downtown Frederick restaurants in that it is upscale enough for date night but casual without being overly fancy.

The Menu at Lima Soul Peruvian Restaurant

If you aren’t familiar with Peruvian cuisine, well, you need to. The Lima Soul menu brings these exciting flavors out in an aggressive way.

Peruvian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the world. Heavily influenced by indigenous, Spanish, and (as Antonio explained to us) early Japanese immigrants.

The Lima Soul menu is full on Peruvian, and here is what to expect:

Fresh seafood dishes
Latin flavors and spices
Lots of fresh citrus
Amazing ceviches
Flavorful grilled meats
Fresh Juices and handcrafted cocktails

The Lima Soul menu is very focused on starters, small plates, ceviches, and raw bar, plus a short list of entrees.

What We Ordered at Lima Soul

Luckily, we had Antonio to guide us through the menu and make recommendations.

I’m a huge fan of ceviches (and have incredible memories of the fresh ones in Peru). So we started with Trio Civichero. Fabulous!

The freshness and flavors of this dish cannot be overstated. In fact, I could have composed an entire meal at Lima Soul solely from ceviche and other raw fish dishes.

However, Antonio had more recommendations, so Nicole and I continued on to the Pulpo a la Parrilla con Chimichurri (grilled octopus – Nicole’s favorite), and the Lasana de Aji de Gallina.

Both dishes were delicious and authentically Peruvian. The octopus was succulent, complemented by a lima bean purée.

The lasagna was the most intriguing dish of the night. Made by Antonio himself, it featured layers of pasta filled with a traditional yellow chicken stew. It was unique and incredibly tasty.

We finished with dessert (volcano lava cake) :).

The Vibe at Lima Soul

It will take some time for Lima Soul to settle in and find its place in Frederick. But it’s already a cool place for a night out.

If you like to linger over dinner, slowly order small plates along with cocktails (including lots of pisco), then you’ll love Lima Soul.

In fact, the bar at Lima Soul is inviting in itself, and there were several couples eating there in a ‘chef’s table’ fashion.

The night we visited had a live music performer, but the place still had a dining room vibe only with some background music.

Antonio also explained that Lima Soul will eventually have a small Peruvian-focused market in the back, featuring products from Peruvian artists and food producers.

Final Verdit - Is Lima Soul Worth Visiting?

Nicole and I love dining in downtown Frederick, and the more cool restaurants we can add to our rotation, the better. Lima Soul Frederick is now on the list.

We’d highly recommend you do the same, especially if you have never tried authentic Peruvian cuisine. It will surprise you in a very delicious way.

Are you a fan of mead, or perhaps a wine enthusiast looking to broaden your horizons?

Regardless of your answer, Nicole and I would like to introduce you to a hidden gem that will tantalize your taste buds: Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD.

This established meadery and winery stands out as one of the unique tasting venues in the Frederick area, and it’s an experience that winery lovers in Maryland shouldn’t miss.

I’ll admit that I knew very little about mead before visiting Orchid Cellar. But after trying their small-batch, handcrafted meads, I’m sold on this ancient drink.

What is Mead?

Mead is a beverage made from fermented honey. It is considered by some to be the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage, originating in both Africa and China.

Mead’s popularity declined with the rise of beer and wine, but has made a comeback in recent years with the rise of local mead producers.

Mead generally is sweeter and has a higher alcohol content than wine (10% to 20% vs 9% to 16%). To me, mead most resembles dessert or late harvest wines.

What Makes Orchid Cellar Such a Fabulous Tasting Experience?

Orchid Cellar combines lots of the characteristics that Nicole and I look for in a great winery experience.

A great indoor tasting room
Knowledgeable and friendly staff who guide you through their products

Nicole and I recently visited on a warm, sunny Saturday in April, and the atmosphere was truly magical. The farm radiated with beauty, and the venue was abuzz with visitors, yet it maintained a comfortable sense of space.

A very nice tasting room employee gave us a detailed explanation of the Orchid Cellar meads as we tasted them, including how they are made, the different varietals, and the history of the meadery.

From Poland to Rural Maryland - The History of Orchid Cellar

While visiting Orchid Cellar, we were lucky enough to meet and spend time chatting with one of the founders, Marzanna Wilk.

Marzanna explained that she and her husband came to the US from Poland, and in the early 2000s, when she started to miss the taste of mead, she could not really find it in Maryland.

Fast-forward to 2006, and Marzanna and her husband Andrzej began making their own mead in Maryland. In 2009, they purchased the property that would eventually become the Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery.

Their meads gained popularity, leading to consistent business growth.

By 2016, they had moved into a cabin-style tasting room (they built it themselves!), which serves as the foundation of the meadery today.

The Setting: Relaxing Farm Vibes in Middletown

One of the biggest reasons to visit Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD is the setting and atmosphere.

Set on a quiet farm property, you’ll find:

Rolling hills and mountain views
Plenty of outdoor seating areas on scenic decks, patios, and sprawling lawns, perfect for sunny days
A cozy tasting room with rustic charm
A vineyard to wander and farm animals to visit

One of the reasons Nicole and I love visiting wineries is the peaceful setting. Much like its nearby Middletown neighbor, Mazzaroth Vineyards, Orchid Cellar fits the bill.

Tasting Options at Orchid Cellar

Part of the fun in visiting Orchid Cellar is all the new types of beverages you can try. They serve not only wines, but a long list of traditional meads, and several incredibly delicious sparkling meads.

You can mix and match tastings however you like, and the variety of mead flavors is super interesting and fun. Here are some of Nicole’s and my favorites:

Squire – this is the most traditional honey mead
Jester – made with caramelized honey and intense orange flavor
Ghost Hunter – very peculiar, sweet and spicy combination
Wild Berry – our favorite of the sparkling meads

Tips for Visiting Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD

Before you go, here are a few tips to make the most of your visit:

Check hours they are open from Friday to Sunday (otherwise by appointment)

1. The Visitation Hotel (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The Visitation Hotel opened in December 2024 with a splash. This Marriott Tribute property was created by converting a historic 19th-century building that once served as a convent and a Catholic school for women.

The hotel is stunning in various ways, primarily due to how it incorporates its rich history, and its upscale vibe.

Its location is also unbeatable—just two blocks off Market Street in downtown Frederick, it’s within walking distance to all the fantastic shops, restaurants, and bars the area has to offer.

Additionally, the on-site Wye Oak Tavern, a restaurant by celebrity chefs Michael and Bryan Voltaggio, is a destination in its own right. Wye Oak is the best restaurant in Frederick and provides a fabulous dining experience in what was originally the convent’s chapel.

If you want the ultimate downtown Frederick hotel experience, this is the place to stay!

2. 10 Clarke Bed and Breakfast (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: 10 Clarke is a charming B&B situated in an unbeatable location, ideal for both relaxation and exploration of Frederick.

Housed in a lovely historic Victorian home, this bed and breakfast offers a serene escape, yet is just a stone’s throw from the heart of downtown Frederick.

The luxuriously decorated rooms beautifully blend European elegance with early American charm, creating a cozy yet sophisticated atmosphere.

Guests rave about the breakfast, which is both plentiful and delicious, ensuring you start your day off right. What truly sets 10 Clarke apart is its prime location.

Just around the corner is Baker Park, Frederick’s main downtown park, perfect for leisurely strolls or picnics. A mere few blocks away, you’ll find the lively downtown area filled with diverse restaurants and bars.

3. Hollerstown Hill Bed and Breakfast( Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Another bed-and-breakfast in the same neighborhood is Hollerstown Hill. This distinctive pink Victorian home is decorated with antiques and collectibles, and each of the four guest rooms is unique and comfortable.

But again, one of the best features of this property is its downtown location.

You can easily walk to Frederick attractions like Carroll Creek Park, including the cluster of Frederick Breweries at the east end.

You’ll have a selection of all the best Frederick restaurants just a few blocks north of you on N Market St, including Il Porto, TheWine Kitchen on the Creek, and Hootch and Banter.

4. The Wedgewood Inn (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The Wedgewood Inn, a single-unit property dating back to 1907, was recently fully renovated. The location doesn’t get much better in downtown Frederick.

The unit has three bedrooms, each with a king-size bed. There’s also three bathrooms and a sun porch.

The property is right next to Magoo’s Pub (one of the best bars in Frederick). You’ll be one block off N. Market Street, where all the shopping and nightlife happen in downtown Fredericksburg.

5. Inn on Market (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Nicole and I love this place! Inn on Market (and its accompanying bistro Up on Market) is a landmark venue in Frederick, MD.

The building dates back to 1792, when it was owned by Richard Potts, a member of the Continental Congress. However, today it’s a French-style Inn at the north end of Market Street in downtown Frederick.

It has four unique rooms, each with a private bath, elegant design, and comfort.

Its best feature may be the Bistro. It’s an excellent place for breakfast or brunch (it’s French!), but it’s also one of the best places in Frederick for dinner.

The location can’t be beaten, and Frederick’s heart is outside the Inn’s door.

6. Downtown Frederick Airbnb, VRBO, and Rentals

Why We Love It: If you are deciding where to stay in downtown Frederick, we highly recommend considering a vacation rental.

Like most towns with any amount of tourist visitation, Frederick has a great inventory of vacation rentals, Airbnbs, and VRBOs.

Many of these are in the heart of downtown, have been renovated, even though they may be in very historic buildings.

Downtown is the best part of Frederick! Downtown Frederick is historic, charming, lively, and walkable.

If you want the ultimate Frederick visitor experience, especially if you are looking for a romantic getaway or really love history, we recommend you book the Visitation Hotel.

You’ll spend more, but it’s by far the most interesting place to stay.

The vacation rentals in downtown Frederick have a lot going for them as well. These work great for:

families or groups needing multiple rooms
kitchens, ability to make some meals
remote work

Airbnb and VRBO have made booking really great and affordable rentals in place like downtown Frederick so easy that its definitely an option to consider.

There’s not much that is complicated or specific about booking a hotel in downtown Frederick, but you should be aware of some of the events that create busy times in downtown Frederick:

Yes, parking is incredibly easy and accessible downtown. You can often find a parking spot on the street in downtown Frederick, even on the main artery (N. Market Street).

There are also two garages downtown: the Carroll Creek Garage and the Church Street Garage where you can park for a few dollars.

Nicole and I have always been impressed with the quality of the Italian restaurants in downtown Frederick. I’ve always believed it’s partly due to Frederick’s proximity to Baltimore, which has its own authentic Little Italy.

One of our favorite Italian restaurants in all of the Frederick area is Cucina Massi.

From handmade pasta to thoughtfully crafted entrées, Cucina Massi in Frederick, MD, delivers authentic Italian flavors with a modern touch in a warm, welcoming atmosphere—and it does so exceptionally well.

It’s a must-try Italian restaurant in Frederick.

Cucina Massi is in the heart of downtown Frederick, on Patrick Street about 2 blocks from North Market St. It’s on a strip of Partric that is home to several other of the best restaurants in Frederick.

Cucina Massi does not take reservations (maybe our biggest gripe with the place). If you are planning a weekend visit, plan on a wait!

The good news: there are plenty of places nearby to get a drink while you wait for your table. We often visit Tenth Ward Distilling next door.

The Vibe at Cucina Massi

Cucina Massi greets you as a downtown neighborhood trattoria that has probably been there for years.

It’s cozy and inviting, sectioned off into many rooms. You feel like you are dining in an intimate setting, regardless of where you are seated.

It’s upscale casual and by no means a ‘quiet’ fine-dining restaurant. It’s generally crowded and energetic on weekends.

The ambiance at Cucina Massi is perfect for date night, family or group gatherings, a night out in Frederick, or a special occasion dinner.

The Back Deck at Cucina Massi!

The main building has multiple dining rooms and a small but inviting bar right when you walk in. All of those are great places to eat at Cucina Massi.

But by far our favorite part of the restaurant is the back deck.

The back deck has its own bar and dining area, and dials up the character a few notches.

If the weather is nice enough for al fresco dining, we suggest you request a table in this section.

What to Order at Cucina Massi

Cucina Massi has a fabulous classic Italian “can’t go wrong” type menu. This is the type of place that makes ordering a series of tough decisions.

Cocktails and Wine at Cucina Massi

The cocktail and wine list at Cucina Massi is simple and solid.

I’ve had the classic Italian Campari Spritz, and Nicole has ordered several others, including The Tony Negroni. Both are delicious.

The Cucina Massi wine list is curated and simple, just enough to compliment the food. Don’t expect an extensive, worldly list of wines by the bottle.

But all the white and red Italians are covered by the glass or bottle: Pinot Grigio, Verdicchio, Chianti, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Starters You Can't Skip

You could make a great meal at Cucina Massi just on the wine and starters alone.

The ‘Spuntino’ menu includes classics like

Hand-Made Pastas - The Reason You Visit a Restaurant Like This

You can get some excellent entrees at Cucina Massi. They serve Parmigiana, Picatta, and Marsala versions of both chicken and veal. I’ve had several and love them.

Their signature Massi version of chicken or veal is a dish of sauteed tomato, mozzarella, and shrimp. Definitely worth a try.

But let’s be real. There’s one main reason you visit a place like Cucina Massi: pasta.

The pasta dishes here are plentiful and outstanding. You have some tough choices, and at places like this, I usually go simple and stick to the basics.

Don't Sleep on the Pizza or Desserts

Maybe one of the most underated aspects of Cucina Massi is the pizza. Cucina Massi serves up some of the best pizza in Frederick.

Try the NIDO’s Favorite Recipe pizza: extra-virgin olive oil, garlic, and fontina cheese.

Regardless of which way you go with your dinner – entree, pasta, pizza – save room for dessert.

We always order the tiramisu and can’t recommend it highly enough.

Does Cucina Massi Take Reservations?

No! They do not take reservations, nor do they accept call ahead (believe me I’ve tried many times).

Expect to put your name on the list and wait on weekends.

Where Can I Park for Cucina Massi?

Cucina Massi is in downtown Frederick with no dedicated parking area.

However, parking in downtown Frederick is generally not bad. You can park on the street or the Carroll Creek garage is just around the corner.

Does Cucina Massi Have Happy Hour?

Yes! Happy Hour is Tuesday to Friday from 3:55 pm to 6:10 pm.

The Monocacy River near Frederick, MD, is the largest river that feeds the Potomac in Maryland. It is also a scenic river, popular for recreation, and kayaking the Monocacy River is one of the best outdoor experiences in Frederick.

An established Monocacy Scenic Water Trail makes it easy to access the river and plan a Monocacy River kayaking adventure.

In this post, we report on the recent kayak trip Nicole and I took on the upper section of the Monocacy Scenic Water Trail and tell you what you need to know if you want to enjoy it.

Monocacy Scenic Water Trail - Basic

The Monocacy Scenic Water Trail travels 41.8 starting at Rocky Ridge Soft Access on Maryland Route 77, about 25 minutes north of Frederick. The trail spans 3 sections ending south of Frederick at the Monocacy Boat Ramp on the C&O Canal near the mouth of the Potomac.

Sections of the Monocacy Scenic Water Trail

The trail is broken into 3 main sections:

Section 1: Rocky Ridge Soft Access to Devilsbiss
Section 2: Devilbiss to Gambill Mill
Section 3: Gambill Mill to Monocacy Boat Ramp

Section 1 is generally consider the most remote, calm, and scenic.

Accessing the River and Paddling the Trail

There are multiple access points to the river. See links to the maps above. Our preferred place to enter the river is the Devilbiss Bridge.

Here there is a small parking lot, and easy trail down to the river. The river is calm here and a straightforward place to enter the river.

On most days, the river in section 1 is calm enough to travel upstream via paddle. You may have to stop a certain spots to walk your kayak where the water is shallow or current too strong. You can then paddle back to where you started.

Things to Remember Before Kayaking the Monocacy

Some things to consider before kayaking the Monocacy River:

Check water levels using the USGS site above or this NOAA site
It’s mandatory to water a life jacket
Bug Repellant and Sunscreen
A Dry Sack or something to protect your phone

Need to Rent a Kayak, Tube, or Canoe to Float the Monocacy?

Nicole and I have our own kayaks that she bought at Sierra. We easily transport them in our pick up.

If you want to enjoy kayaking or floating the Monocacy in a tube, you can do this with an outfitter who rents.

River Island Outfitters is located 20 minutes south of Frederick in Dickerson, MD. They offer two-hour tube floats in the lower section of the Monocacy and kayak rentals.

Who doesn’t love pizza? Nicole and I certainly do, and we eat it regularly in Frederick and Bend. In this article, I’ll share where we believe you can find the Best Pizza in Frederick, MD.

Frederick has quietly become a fabulous pizza town. This is partly due to the abundance of great breweries and Italian restaurants in Frederick, many of which serve pizza.

1. White Rabbit Gastropub (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: We give The White Rabbit in Frederick a lot of praise in our guides, and for good reason. It’s a fabulous gastropub with a few great bars and serves one of the best burgers in Frederick.

But more than anything, The White Rabbit shines with its pizza. The Detroit-style pizza is so delicious that I get a craving for it out of nowhere at least once a month.

The variety of topping combinations is creative and yummy as well (The Veronica Vaughn for me, The Big Dill for Nicole)

In fact, Nicole and I consider having drinks and pizza at the White Rabbit bar one of the best dining experiences in Frederick.

2. Cugino Forno (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: If you like Neapolitan Pizza, then Cugino Forno is the place to go in Frederick. This style of pizza, with its thin crust and puffy, blistery outer rim, originates from Naples and reminds you of Italy.

Cugino Forno originated in North Carolina, but opened on the North side of Frederick in 2022 and immediately became a huge hit. The outdoor terrace facing Market Street is usually packed on nice evenings.

Their pizzas come in classics like Margarita and Americano (pepperoni, buffalo cheese, basil, garlic), and they serve some great salads.

Pair it with some Italian red wine or a Peroni beer, and you’ve got a great pizza meal in Frederick.

3. dop Pizza (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: dōp Pizza established itself as a wood-fired pizza food truck that operated throughout Frederick and built a loyal customer base.

They have since opened a brick-and-mortar location at RAK Brewing (one of Frederick’s best breweries), which has become a favorite place for Nicole and me to get pizza and beer after a weekend outdoor outing.

The pizzas from dõp have classic wood-fired characteristics, but also come in creative culinary combinations.

Try the Figgy Smalls with Prosciutto (garlic fonduta, mozzarella, stracciatella, arugula, basil vinaigrette, fig sauce, prosciutto), or the Qattro Formaggi (garlic fonduta, mozzarella, gorgonzola, ricotta, parmesan, truffle honey).

4. Pistarro's (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Nicole and I consider Pistarro’s one of the best Italian restaurants in Frederick. But their pizza definitely deserves a spot on this list.

Pistarro’s also focuses on Neapolitan pizza, serving many classics, including Margherita, Bianca, and Capricciosa (mushrooms, ham, artichoke, and basil).

It’s also a great place for vegan pizza and gluten-free pizza in Frederick.

Pistarro’s has a family Italian restaurant vibe. We recommend sitting at the bar if you are a couple. Order some Italian wine, antipasto, and pizza for a stellar pizza outing in Frederick.

5. Cucina Massi (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Cucina Massi reminds us of the Italian restaurants in Baltimore’s Little Italy.

Nicole and I visit often, and admittedly its difficult to order pizza at Cucina Massi, with all the other amazing Italian dishes on the menu.

But we’ve had their pizza, and it’s worth ordering at one of your visits. They keep it simple with only a few combos to choose from. I suggest you try NIDO’s (extra virgin olive oil, garlic, and fontina cheese).

One last recommendation for when dining at Cucina Massi: get a table on the back terrace.

6. Il Forno (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Located on the Golden Mile in west Frederick, Il Forno is a casual comfort-food spot with pizza that gets rave reviews from locals.

Il Forno has been around for 35 years, receives regular acclaim in Frederick pizza rankings, and is not shy about proclaiming itself the maker of “The Best Pizza in Fredrick”.

Maybe my favorite thing about this pizza joint is its recent collaboration with Vanish Brewery. You can now get craft beer from Vanish while enjoying your pizza at Il Forno.

While I haven’t tried them yet, Il Forno also claims to have the best wings in Frederick.

7. The Garage (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: We consider this one of our special places in Frederick, and we almost don’t like to write about it.

The Garage is an obscure, off-the-beaten-path joint in an office park close to the Frederick airport. But it’s one of our favorite restaurants in Frederick.

While my go-to meal at the Garage is the burger, their specialty is pizza. The Garage pizzas are cooked in a wood-fired oven and served with local beers in their funky dining area, bar, or outdoor seating area.

Try the Farrell – white sauce, caramelized onions, mushrooms, and truffle oil.

Bonus #1: King's Pasquales (New Market, MD)

Why We Love It: If you are in New Market or on the east side of Frederick and looking for pizza, consider King’s Pasquales.

This family pizza and pasta restaurant is run by the Colandrea brothers, and it’s perfect if you are looking for quality, consistent, no-frills pizza.

This is the spot that Nicole and I get take-out pizza (when we aren’t ordering Ledo’s). It’s a build-your-own type of place, perfect for ordering for a big group or a ‘stay inside’ pizza night.

It’s definitely the best pizza in New Market.

Bonus #2: Tony Pazzo (Mount Airy, MD)

Why We Love It: There’s a lovely, quaint downtown strip in Mt. Airy MD, if you are looking for a getaway from Frederick.

One of the best restaurants in Mt. Airy is Tony Pazzo Italian Ristorante, an upscale casual joint with really good pizza.

Nicole and I will make a special trip to Mt. Airy often to visit Liquidity Aleworks and Tony Pazzo for pizza.

There are really good appetizers, pasta, and red wine to round out your pizza outing in Mt. Airy.

The Frederick Pizza Scene

You can get all types of pizza in Frederick. Partly due to the influence of nearby Baltimore’s Little Italy, there are Italian restaurants like Cucina Massi and Pistarro’s that serve restaurant-quality pizza.

There are plenty of chain pizza restaurants, including Maryland’s legendary Ledo’s Pizza (Glenn’s childhood favorite).

There’s pizza delivery in Frederick at the touch of your mobile phone from 20+ pizza venues, including both local shops and chain restaurants.

You can get classic New York-style pizza from Frederick mainstays like Bellisario’s, and Chicago-style deep-dish from Rosati’s near Hood College.

Or try the Detroit-style pizza from White Rabbit (which Nicole and I consider the best in town).

In this guide, we focus only on local restaurants (non-chains) and the dining-in experience. Though many of these Frederick pizza joints deliver.

What Do We Look For in a Great Pizza Spot?

Here’s what we look in a great pizza place, and the criteria we used to rank the pizza restaurants in this list:

Quality – By far the most important is the pizza’s quality and deliciousness. This isn’t fine dining. Give me amazing pizza.
Variety – Nicole and I have VERY different tastes (toppings, crust, etc.). Have options.
Beverages – I usually want a beer with my pizza. Nicole may want wine.
Venue – Not the highest priority, but where we are served and eat is a factor.

This isn’t complicated.

1. Little Bennett Regional Park (Clarksburg, MD)

Best For: Mountain Biking, Single-Track, Family Paved Trails

Why Bike Here: Little Bennett Regional Park is in Montgomery County, but has several trailheads no more than 20 minutes away from Frederick.

The Little Bennett bike trails are a vast network of single-track trails through the woods that are excellent for biking. You can construct a route that is great for beginners and families, but also something to challenge more experienced mountain bikers.

There are over 10 trailheads to begin a bike route in Little Bennett, but the one we use most often is the Hyattstown Mill Road trailhead near Clarksburg. Like most trailheads at Little Bennett, parking is easy and free.

One of our favorite Little Bennett Bike Routes starts and ends at Hyattstown Mill, which is 14.2 km (about 1.5 to 2 hours of riding).

Riding in Little Bennett is a mix of single-track trails through the woods (mostly easy to medium difficulty), along with some paved trails and roads.

2. C&O Canal Bike Trail (C&O Canal National Park, MD)

Best For: Gravel and Dirt Trails, Minimal Ups and Downs

Why Bike Here: The C&O Canal Bike Trail (also called the C&O Towpath) is 184.5 miles of dirt, stone, and gravel bike trail along the historic C&O Canal.

Much of it is near Frederick, and you can do some great biking on the C&O Canal by driving less than 30 minutes from downtown.

The C&O starts in Cumberland, Maryland, and you can bike the trail all the way into Washington, D.C. Some of the best stretches are near Frederick, from Harper’s Ferry to Point of Rocks to Leesburg.

Virtually all of the C&O Trail is easy riding on a well-maintained path with little elevation change. This isn’t hardcore mountain biking, it’s a trail the whole family can handle.

If you want a superb 1.5- to 2-hour excursion, check out the route that Nicole and I like best: Nolands Ferry to Marble Quarry on the C&O Canal. Nolands Ferry is one of the closest trailheads to Frederick and is a great parking spot (free!) to start your C&O bike excursion.

3. Frederick Historic Bicycle Loop (Frederick, MD)

Best For: Paved Trails, Road Cycling, City Sights

Why Bike Here: The city of Frederick designed the Frederick Historic Bicycle Loop as a historic tour of downtown Frederick. It’s a great way to see both Frederick’s history and vibrant downtown vibe via a ten-mile bike ride.

The loop is carefully mapped, fully paved, and begins and ends at the Frederick Visitor Center. Parking is free.

It is mostly on downtown streets and bike paths and includes a lovely, long stretch through Baker Park and Carroll Creek Park. Plan on about 2 hours for this ride.

You’ll also pass many Frederick coffee shops, restaurants, bars, and other venues that are great for a break!

4. Frederick Watershed (Thurmont, MD)

Best For: Technical Mountain Biking

Why Bike Here: If you are looking for the best technical mountain biking trails near Frederick, head to the Frederick Watershed CWMA.

The Frederick Watershed is a protected forest filled with ponds, creeks, birds, deer, and….mountain biking trails.

The Frederick Watershed trails are serious business. There is an extensive network of single-track trails, and virtually all of them are challenging. The routes in this area are designed for moderate to advanced mountain bikers, and you’ll want a fairly technical bike that can withstand bumpy trails through the forest.

I’d compare the Watershed trails to the advanced biking trails we ride in Bend, Oregon.

5. Gambrill State Park - Yellow Trail (Gambrill State Park, MD)

Best For: Single-Track Mountain Biking

Why Bike Here: Gambrills State Park is another beautiful setting just outside of Frederick, with 16 miles of trails for hiking and biking.

The trailhead for all routes is the same parking lot on Gambrill Park Road. You can choose from many single-track routes through the woods, with a range of difficulties.

In our opinion, the best route is the Gambrills Yellow Trail. This seven-mile, moderately difficult trail has some technical areas. It also reaches several beautiful overlooks and is a great way to explore the broader state park.

However, several other trails (from beginner to advanced) are worth trying as well.

Gambrills charges a day-use fee of $3 for Maryland residents and $5 for non-residents.

6. Ballenger Creek Trail (Frederick, MD)

Best For: Paved Trails, Families

Why Bike Here: Another great in-town paved Frederick bike trail is the Ballenger Creek Trail (also known as the Ballenger Linear Creek Trail).

Connecting Buckeystown Pike with Ballenger Creek Park, this 4.2-mile trail is totally paved and can be done with any type of bike.

The trail follows Ballenger Creek, so it’s mostly flat. It feels partially urban, as you’ll pass several schools and neighborhoods, but it’s quite pleasant with the creek next to the trail.

You can start at either end, parking at the Buckeystown Pike parking lot or Ballenger Creek Park. About 1/3 of the way from Buckeystown Pike, there’s an additional trailhead at Advisor’s Court.

We usually do the whole trail up and back in about 2.5 hours. You’ll likely share the trail with walkers, joggers, and skaters. The trail is also ADA-compliant.

7. Patuxent River State Park (Gaithersburg, MD)

Best For: Technical Mountain Biking

Why Bike Here: While Nicole and I have mostly hiked here, Patuxent River State Park has excellent mountain biking trails.

It’s a sprawling park with a variety of parking lots and launch points, but we suggest the parking lot on Route 94, which gives you access to the Bootjack Trail and Scotts Branch Trail, creating a nice 6.5-mile loop.

The trails are well-maintained, and the elevation gains aren’t too steep.

There’s enough challenge in the ride to make it fun, but easy enough for beginner mountain bikers.

Options for Bike Riding Around Frederick MD

You can do a variety of biking around Frederick. There are some great mountain biking trails near Frederick, including single-track trails for beginners (Little Bennet Regional Park) and technical stuff for the more adventurous (Frederick Watershed).

Some of the best bike trails in Maryland, such as the C&O Canal Bike Trail (a place Nicole and I love), and Gambrill State Park, are right in the vicinity of Frederick.

If you want to stick to paved trails closer to the city, you can find these types of routes in Frederick as well. The Ballenger Creek Trail is paved, flat, and great for families.

1. McClintock's Back Bar (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Every time we write about McClintock’s Back Bar, I get slightly more anxious because I know this once obscure, secret cocktail bar will be discovered by more people. That ship has probably sailed.

MBB is the best place to get a cocktail in Frederick. Its ideal but slightly hidden location behind the parent McClintock Distillery gives it a speakeasy feel. The cocktails are exquisite, made from on-premise rye, bourbon, gin, or vodka.

The modern and comfy stools, the professional bartenders, the creative drinks….just go. But don’t tell too many people!

2. Bentztown (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Bentztown made a big splash in the 2024 Frederick bar and restaurant scene when it opened in the spring.

The Nashville music-themed venue has quickly become one of the coolest places to eat, drink, listen to music, or just hang out in downtown Frederick.

The bar is big, bold, elegantly decorated, and fully stocked. There’s a heavy emphasis on bourbon (you can get a bourbon flight), but the menu of other various cocktails keeps you wanting to try more.

Bentztown has the same ownership as Brewer’s Alley and Monocacy Brewing, so you, of course, see many of their flagship beers on the menu, too.

You’ll love the food. The Bentztown Smashed Butcher Burger is one of the best burgers in Frederick.

3. Wye Oak Tavern (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The second big splash in Frederick’s entertainment scene in 2024 happened late in the year with the Visitation Hotel opening, along with its on-property restaurant, Wye Oak Tavern.

The Visitation Hotel is a new Tribute Portfolio Hotel by Marriott, converted from a 1852 monastery. It immediately became the most interesting place to stay in Frederick, MD. The Wye Oak Tavern is a joint venture by celebrity chefs and brothers Bryan and Michael Voltaggio.

There’s so much to say about this amazing new place in Frederick. But focusing on the bar at Wye Oak alone, go check it out the next time you are looking for something upscale, trendy, and different. (It’s built on a converted church altar).

4. White Rabbit Gastropub (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The White Rabbit in Frederick is a must-visit establishment! It’s an authentic gastropub full of character, with delectable Detroit-style pizza and excellent burgers. But the bar is worth visiting on its own.

One clarification: there are 2 bars at White Rabbit, an upstairs and a downstairs bar. While both are very cool, and you should fight for a seat at either, follow our recommendation and head upstairs first.

The upstairs bar is one of the best bars in Frederick. The backlit shelves, comfy stools, and highly talented bartenders make this a mesmerizing place to have drinks.

If you are a beer lover, you’re in for a treat. White Rabbit keeps ~30 local and international brews on its menu, either on draft or in bottles. It’s a great place to try interesting beer.

The cocktail and whiskey list is equally impressive, and as mentioned, the bartenders are top-notch. Love this place!

5. The Wine Kitchen (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The Wine Kitchen on the Creek is also one of Frederick’s best restaurants. It’s the perfect Frederick special occasion, date night, or place to take out-of-town guests, located right on Carroll Creek.

So, while we highly recommend eating there, hitting up its bar for drinks is another Frederick secret.

The place has a cool vibe, and the bar feels high-end. Maybe the best aspect of The Wine Kitchen is the flights. It has an extensive wine and whiskey list. You order these in recommended ‘flights’ (for example, “American Whiskey Flight”), each with a note card for each serving. It’s a fun way to try new wines and spirits.

Beer and cocktail lovers won’t be disappointed. The beer list is creative and locally focused, and the cocktail list is funky.

6. Hootch and Banter (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This is another Frederick Downtown cornerstone. Hootch and Banter has a small bar (it’s a relatively small place), but if you can score a high chair, it doesn’t get much better for a bar downtown.

It’s a go-to spot for Nicole and me and has some of the best gourmet sandwiches in town. Our favorite thing to do is hit the bar for a beer or cocktail, then, when hungry, order and eat at the bar! It’s also a great place to hit after a round of golf in Frederick.

Make no mistake, this is not a sandwich shop. It’s a proper restaurant with top-shelf cocktails.

7. True Standard Distilling (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This new rum-focused distillery opened in downtown Frederick in 2025 and became an immediate hit.

True Standard Distilling is a genuine distillery, with regular tours and tastings. But the onsite cocktail bar has gotten more attention than anything. In fact, there is often a line to get in on weekends.

Inside is a colorful and upscale cocktail bar serving a variety of fancy rum cocktails. They have regular events, and we’d recommend making a tasting and tour reservation, which then gets you access to the bar.

8. The Tasting Room (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The Tasting Room Frederick is one of the best places to eat in Frederick, MD, especially for high-end fine dining. But visiting the bar for drinks is also a big city experience.

It has maybe the best wine list in town, many of which are available by the glass. The cocktails on the whiskey list are also ‘special occasion’ worthy.

If you are going to dinner at The Tasting Room, or somewhere else downtown for a ‘fancy’ night, hit up the Tasting Room for a beginning of the evening drink.

9. Tenth Ward Distilling Company (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: There are several great distilleries in Frederick, including McClintocks, Dragon Distillery, Springfield Manor). Tenth Ward is another one right downtown on Patrick Street.

That makes it a great place to visit, where you can taste its signature Maryland Rye Whiskey, Genever Gin, Smoked Bourbon, and Absinthe Nouvelle.

But Tenth Ward is also a place for cocktails! So, while you won’t find beer or wine here, it’s an excellent stop for original cocktails made from local products. The drinks rotate constantly and are seasonal, so a stop in Tenth Ward is never dull.

Happy Hours and Live Music are regular. Frederick must visit!

10. Black Hog BBQ (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Black Hog BBQ is a small chain of BBQ restaurants with a prominent location downtown, a few blocks south of Carroll Creek. It’s a great place for BBQ, and it also has a spacious, comfy indoor bar on the first level.

However, Black Hog underwent significant renovations in 2023, including the creation of a fabulous rooftop area with a bar and seating. It’s immediately become one of the best places to eat, drink, and hang out, weather permitting.

So hit up Black Hog if you are in the mood for authentic BBQ, but come for the rooftop, even if it’s only for drinks.

11. Up on Market Bistro and Inn (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This is another establishment in Frederick with history. In 1792, Richard Potts, a member of the Continental Congress and the first US Attorney for Maryland, bought the building.

Today, Up on Market is a French and Belgian bistro in downtown Frederick that gives off a European vibe. In addition to being a bistro, it’s also an Inn with four rooms for rent (and one of Frederick’s best places to stay).

Nicole and I discovered this place wandering in for a drink once. We were amazed by its incredible selection of European Wines and Belgian beers! We enjoyed a local dessert wine from Mazzaroth Vineyards on our first visit.

There’s a small but very Europena bar in inside, and a great drink menu. Or enjoy a drink on the Market Street patio outside in nice weather.

12. Brewer's Alley (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Brewer’s Alleys is about as central as it gets to downtown Frederick. It is located in a historic building dating back to the 18th century.

Today, it’s a popular brewpub in Frederick serving its beers on-site and at its off-site location, Monocacy Brewing.

The downstairs indoor bar is a great spot, but maybe the best aspect of this place is the upstairs outdoor patio. It’s an awesome place for a beer flight in summer and, in general, is one of the best bars in Frederick.

It should be noted that Brewer’s Alley is also a great place to get a burger in Frederick and one of the better sports bars in Frederick.

13. Pistarro's (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Pistarro’s is another bar in this ranking highly influenced by what you feel like eating for the evening.

Pistarro’s is a well-established pizzeria and Italian restaurant in Frederick. It can sometimes have a family-restaurant feel, but in the evenings, it feels very much like a locals’ place.

When we are in the mood for casual Italian, Pistarro’s is usually our go-to, and we prefer to eat and drink at the bar.

There are plenty of Italian reds by the glass (Chianti, Montepulciano, Sangiovese), and a ton of cheesy, red-sauce appetizers and entrees to go with them. Makes for an awesome Italian, eat-at-the-bar night.

14. River Bar and Grill (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Every town needs good Mexican, and a good Mexican bar. That’s what River Bar and Grill provides for Frederick.

This venue closed in 2024 due to a fire, but thankfully is back open, serving up margaritas, tequila, mezcal, and lots of Mexican beers. The Mexican food is great as well.

Nicole and I also find it to be one of the better places to watch sports in Frederick, so consider it when looking for a place to watch the Ravens in Frederick.

15. Bushwallers (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Bushwaller’s is a classic Irish Pub, and who doesn’t love those? Also in the heart of downtown, Bushwaller’s has been a Frederick staple since 1981.

It’s a beer-and-whiskey kind of place. In fact, the draft beer list is worth a visit alone, with all the classics (Guinness, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny, Harp) paired with locals like Olde Mother Brewing. You can also get a classic Black and Tan.

Cocktail lovers will find plenty of those as well.

The American / Irish pub fare, with favorites like Guinness Beef Stew and Scotch Eggs, completes the Irish Pub experience at Bushwaller’s.

16. Olde Mother Brewing (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: OK, I get it. Olde Mother isn’t a bar; it’s a brewery, and this is not a list of top breweries in Frederick.

But I’ve included it on the list because 1) It’s right downtown, easy to include on any Frederick bar crawl, 2) the beer is amazing, and 3) they have the best burgers in town (BackSlash Burger).

Olde Mother is a great place to hang out, inside or on the patio. They frequently have events, and the craft beer is worth the visit. Simple.

17. Agave 137 Tequila Bar and Kitchen (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Are you a tequila or mezcal fan? If so, then this is the place in Frederick. Agave 137 serves up 70+ types of tequila and mezcal.

This also means a great selection of margaritas and Mexican-style cocktails. (FYI, the ‘137’ comes from its address on Market Street).

In addition to being the best place in Fredrick for tequila, the menu is pretty darn good as well. Highly recommend the tacos. Nicole and I found ourselves at the Agava bar many times this year, having margaritas and tacos. Amazing!

18. Cucina Massi (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Cucina Massi is an Italian Trattoria in downtown Frederick and one of the best places in Frederick for Italian Food. But what we love best about it is The Back Bar!

There’s a fine bar inside the restaurant, and Nicole and I have had drinks there many times, usually waiting for a table.

But I recommend skipping all that and heading straight to the back of the restaurant. There, you will find a lovely back patio with its own bar, tables, chairs, and even greenery and herbs to stare at while you enjoy your Chianti or Montepulciano wine.

In fact, heading to the back bar of Cucina Massi for Margherita pizza, pasta, and a bottle of Italian Red is one of the best eating and drinking experiences in Frederick!

19. Magoo's Pub (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Magoo’s is another Irish Pub right off the main downtown drag in Frederick. It’s an intimate and ornate place, great for getting a Guinness or, better yet, a whiskey.

In fact, their Whiskey Wednesdays are combined tastings and dinners that feature a different type of whiskey each month. I’ve heard good things.

Magoo’s has good pub food, with an Irish flair.

20. Cacique (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Another longtime establishment in downtown Frederick, Cacique is a Spanish- and Mexican-themed restaurant whose best feature might be its bar.

Nicole and I frequent Cacique because we love the paella, but it’s also a great place for cocktails downtown, especially if you like tequila cocktails.

The bar is bright and colorful, and always seems to be crowded, especially on weekends.

21. Cellar Door (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Sometimes we all are in the mood for that dark, intimate bar with dim lights and live (preferably loud) music. Cellar Door is that place.

Cellar Door is a happening place with regular entertainment, including live music, open mic comedy, and karaoke. It’s downtown Frederick’s nightclub spot.

There are drinks to satisfy almost anyone, and the menu offers decent food.

22. Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: One of the few chains on this list, Shuckin’ Shack has a great spot on South Market Street and has been going strong since 2015.

You almost can’t miss the place, especially its outside patio with picnic tables along Citizens Way just across from Carroll Creek.

It’s a solid place for drinks (~20 beers on tap, including locals, cocktails, and wine), great bloody marys, and one of the better sports bars in downtown Frederick. Plus, of course, seafood! Oysters are always fresh.

23. JoJo's Restaurant and Tap House (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: If you turn east off Market Street and down Patrick Street, you will see a nice stretch of restaurants and bars. JoJo’s is one of them.

It’s a prominent, welcoming place that always seems to be bustling. There are consistently ~20 beers on draft, plus wine and cocktails. It’s a good spot if you want classic American food – lunch, dinner, or brunch on the weekends.

That big glass front has a way of inviting you in, especially at happy hour!

24. Olde Towne Tavern (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Classic American bar and grill. You want no frills? Olde Towne Tavern is no frills—drinks, appetizers, sandwiches, burgers, and nothing complicated.

It’s a homey place on the north side of downtown. On Thursdays, there are usually specials.

25. Cafe Nola (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Another Patrick Street favorite, known more for its fantastic breakfast, brunch, and lunch. Don’t sleep on the Cafe Nola bar. Stop in for a beer or cocktail in a laid-back setting.

You can come back in the morning for the Migas (and cure that hangover!)

Bonus - Vintage (New Market, MD)

Why We Love It: This is one where we will ask you to travel slightly outside of Frederick to one of our favorites. Vintage Restaurant in New Market is one of our go-tos and undoubtedly one of the best places for drinks in the area.

The joint is in an old building with a cozy bar and a great drink menu. Both classic and creative cocktails are served (we’ve tried them), plus a great selection of wines and beers, including plenty of local options.

Head here on Friday or Saturday, grab a seat at the bar (or a table in the bar area), queue up your favorite weekend drinks, and have dinner. Can’t miss a night out in New Market.

The Underrated Nightlife of Downtown Frederick

As we’ve written in many articles about Frederick, MD, one of its best features is its vibrant downtown. The downtown Frederick bar scene comes to life in the evening, especially on weekends.

This list focuses on the best bars in downtown Frederick, not the greater Frederick area. If you are looking for a night out in Frederick, there are plenty of characteristic downtown Frederick bars to choose from.

You can also create your own downtown Frederick bar crawl with a little planning.

A glance at the map above shows that many of the downtown Frederick bars are near each other and clustered on North Market Street.

Black Hog BBQ is approximately three blocks south of Carrol Creek. Between here and Olde Mother Brewing at the corner of 6th Street, about nine blocks north, are virtually all the Frederick downtown bars on this list.

What's New in 2026 With the Frederick Bar Scene

As usual, there were several openings and closings of bars and restaurants in Downtown Frederick during 2025.

The hottest new bar in Frederick by far in 2025 was True Standard Distilling. This new rum-focused distillery adds to the growing list of distilleries in Frederick to visit.

But it’s become one of the most popular places to get a cocktail in downtown Frederick. In fact, it usually has a line out the door.

The Ordinary Hen, the restaurant that replaced a favorite (Thatcher and Rye) in 2024, closed. It was soon reopened as a new restaurant, 7th Sister, and still has a great bar.

The River Bar and Grill reopened in 2025 after shutting down in 2024 due to a fire.

Finally, in the location that used to be another Frederick Favorite Firestones, a new restaurant, Fire&Oak Cullinary Tavern, opened in December 2025.

Nicole and I love to visit breweries! Especially after we’ve done a hike around Frederick or something else outdoors. So in this post, we list what we think are the Best Breweries in Frederick, MD.

The Frederick Breweries scene is tremendous. Frederick has become one of the premier brewery destinations in Maryland. The selection, variety, and close proximity of several high-quality breweries in Frederick make it a perfect destination for craft beer lovers.

Stone Silo Brewery

Nestled in the Damascus countryside, Stone Silo Brewery pairs exceptional craft beer with sweeping farmland views, creating a welcoming gathering place for friends, families, and fellow beer lovers.

Just 25 minutes east of Frederick, Stone Silo makes for a great brewery day trip. It’s also a fabulous brewery for sunsets or warm evenings.

The Downtown Frederick Breweries (Frederick Beer Trail)

In this article, we first list our favorite Downtown Frederick Breweries. These are all breweries in downtown Frederick or within the city.

Downtown Frederick is a great place to visit if you are a beer or brewery lover. The cluster of breweries around Carroll Creek Park and Market Street makes for an excellent brewery crawl in Frederick!

Because there are so many great breweries in Maryland in the area immediately surrounding Frederick, we’ve added them to the 2025 list in a separate section.

Below, after our ranking of downtown Frederick breweries, we list our favorite breweries around Frederick that are slightly outside the city.

1. Attaboy Beer (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Attaboy has it all. Excellent downtown location right off Carroll Creek Park. Roomy indoor beer hall. Rotating set of beers on tap. Regular food trucks. The outdoor seating area is pleasant despite being surrounded by a parking lot.

Attaboy has become a Frederick landmark and is today also a popular event location (Attaboy Barrel House).

In fact, Nicole and I first visited Attaboy a few years ago, when the Frederick Wedding Expo was held in part at Attaboy (a great way to encourage male participation!).

Ranking: 3.7

2. Olde Mother Brewing (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Olde Mother Brewing Company has a lot to love.

First is the downtown location right on North Market Street. It’s only a few blocks north of the main downtown drag in Frederick.

It’s also been around for ten years, so it has had time to perfect its brewing techniques. The menu always features high-quality beers, including mainstays ‘Hank‘ (American Lager) and Impressionist (Hazy IPA).

But our favorite reason to visit Olde Mother is the associated restaurant in the back of the brew house. Fifty Fifty Burger makes arguably the best burgers in Frederick.

3. Steinhardt Brewing Co. (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Steinhardt is one of the several breweries near Carroll Creek Park’s east section, making for a great Frederick beer crawl. Steinhardt is a significant operation and has what’s maybe the longest beer menu in the area, with everything from ales to lagers to stouts.

If you like Flemish and Belgian-style ales, Steinhardt also produces several of these to try.

It’s a great place to visit on a nice day when you can sit outside along the creek and watch pedestrians go by. Live music inside is also a regular thing at Steinhardt.

4. RAK Brewing Co (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: RAK Brewing burst on the Frederick brewery scene in late 2023 when taking over the space initially occupied by Smoketown Brewery. It now resides in the same Carroll Creek brewery cluster with Attaboy, Steinhardt, and Idiom.

RAK focuses on providing an upscale brewery experience. The taproom is elegant and sophisticated (and can get quite crowded), with upscale furnishings and seating. The tap list is shorter than most breweries, likely by choice.

As mentioned in the intro above, RAK made significant improvements to its facility in 2025, including partnering with DOP Pizza (some of Frederick’s best pizza), which is now on-site.

If you are wondering, the brewery’s name is short for “Random Acts of Kindness,” a tribute to the owner’s various non-profit endeavors.

5. Rockwell Brewery (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: The Rockwell Brewery on East Street, open since 2017, closed in 2025, but their Riverside location is now their main facility. It’s a great place that Nicole and I love!

Rockwell serves a solid list of craft brews. My Rockwell favorites tend to be the IPAs, and the B.I.G. Juicy New England IPA is pretty popular around town and an award winner.

But Rockwell also serves seltzers and cocktails! In fact, when Nicole and I recently visited, she had several of their craft cocktails made from Rockwell Seltzer.

6. Brewer's Alley (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: In many ways, Brewer’s Alley is the heart of downtown Frederick.

With a full-service restaurant, multiple bars, including an amazing rooftop, it’s more than just a brewery. It sits in a building with a ton of history, which, among other things, was once Frederick’s town hall.

But Brewer’s Alley is still at heart a brewery, and should be on your visit list in Frederick.

Brewer’s Alley shares an owner with both Monocacy Brewing (where all of their beers are made) and Bentztown, another great food and drink venue in Frederick.

Ranking: 3.53

7. Monocacy Brewing Company (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: Monocacy Brewing is a Frederick mainstay.

It’s slightly north of downtown on North Market, close to the intersection with Schifferstadt. The brewery is in an interesting building that was once the Ebert’s Ice Cream plant.

The best thing Monocacy has going is the beer itself. High-quality ales and lagers are always on tap, and it seems to be the kind of brewery that knows what it’s good at and sticks to it. In fact, the Brewtiful Lager might be my favorite local Frederick Beer.

Monocacy Beers are also prominently featured around Frederick, including at Frederick Keys games at Nymeo Field and at Brewer’s Alley downtown.

8. Midnight Run Brewing (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This is a unique place that offers a distinct brewery experience and is worth visiting.

Midnight Run is also on the north side of downtown, in the middle of a strip mall. You won’t be blown away by the tap room or beer garden.

But Midnight Run embodies the entire concept of ‘craft beer.’ As Jimmy, the bartender, explained on our last visit, the owners, Rick and Brent, are Frederick County school teachers whose real passion is making beer. Midnight Run is the result.

The resulting tap list is beers that are truly unique. They don’t tend to fall into the usual categories, and they are also on the strong side (so moderate accordingly!).

9. Sandbox Brewhouse (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: In May 2025, Sandbox Brewhouse took over the original Rockwell Brewing location on East St in Frederick.

Nicole and I have checked it out and love it. It’s a family-run brewery that’s laid back and casual.

It’s also the perfect place to get a beer before or after a meal at Showroom. They share a parking lot!

Ranking: 3.7

Breweries Near Frederick, Maryland

Now that we’ve listed our favorite breweries in downtown Frederick, below is a list of breweries near Frederick but slightly outside town.

Most of these are no more than 30-45 minutes away, and make for a great brewery day trip around Frederick. Check out the map below if you want to combine several into a fabulous brewery outing.

1. Elder Pine Brewing (Gaithersburg, MD)

Why We Love It: It will take you about 40 minutes to reach Elder Pine from Frederick, but this is a brewery we highly recommend you visit.

The first reason is fabulous beer! Elder Pine makes some of the best craft beer I’ve had anywhere in Maryland. In fact, you’ll find it on the menu in many restaurants in Frederick.

But Elder Pine is a great place to visit, with an enchanting tap room and an even better outdoor seating area amongst tall pine trees.

There is a decent hike around the corner as well.

2. Stone Silo Brewery (Damascus, MD)

Why We Love It: Stone Silo Brewery opened in January 2023, which was pretty exciting for Nicole and me because it’s very near our house. Stone Silo is about 25 minutes from Frederick, heading towards Damascus.

What started as a small operation with a modest taproom has gradually expanded over the last year. There is now an expansive patio seating area, and maybe their best feature is the killer view from the grass seating area out back.

You can grab a few Adirondacks in the back when the weather is decent and enjoy Stone Silo brews while watching the sunset over the Maryland countryside.

Favorite Beer: Stoned Franc (Barrel Aged Chocolate Cherry Porter)

3. Cushwa Brewing Co (Williamsport, MD)

Why We Love It: This is the place if you are anywhere near Hagerstown or Williamsport and need a beer.

Cushwa Brewing Co (technically in Williamsport) is also worth making a special trip from Frederick if you want to try an outstanding brewery.

The first time Nicole took me here, I was not impressed as we drove up. Cushwa is in the back of an office complex next to a highway.

But, like so many breweries these days, you can judge them from the outside.

Cushwa brews up incredibly delicious craft beer. They also serve really good pizza, so visit them when hungry as well.

4. Milkhouse Brewing (Mt Airy, MD)

Why We Love It: Milkhouse Brewery at Stillpoint Farm has been brewing, selling, and serving craft beer for over 10 years.

Located near Mount Airy, MD, it truly feels like you are visiting a farm when you are at Milkhouse.

The taproom is cozy and small, and we recommend visiting on a nice day outside because sitting outside at Milkhouse is special. The farmhouse is elevated and has excellent views over the Maryland countryside.

The beers are solid as well. We’ve often bought Milkhouse beer to drink at home and love it.

Ranking: 3.58

5. Silly Yak Beer Company (Gaithersburg, MD)

Why We Love It: Are you on a gluten-free diet? Chances are you don’t drink much beer. Silly Yak Beer Company near Damascus is trying to change that.

Silly Yak is Maryland’s only brewery dedicated to gluten-free beer production. But Silly Yak is worth visiting even if you aren’t celiac and just appreciate good beer.

It’s about 30 minutes to Silly Yak from Frederick towards Damascus. Silly Yak Brewery is on a lovely farm setting, and you can enjoy it inside or outside.

It’s also the home of Two Story Chimney Ciderworks if you prefer cider.

6. Flood Zone Marketplace and Brewery (Union Bridge, MD)

Why We Love It: The town of Union Bridge, Maryland, is a sleepy place, and the Little Pipe Creek that runs through it has a propensity to flooding.

But it does have a bustling brewery and restaurant called The Flood Zone, and it is well worth visiting if you are in the area.

The Flood Zone is a sprawling facility with tons of indoor and outdoor seating. It also has The Food Spot, which serves delicious flatbreads and other pub food.

As far as the beers, this is a brewery that isn’t afraid to experiment. Try the Green Bell Chilles Pale Ale!

7. Waredaca Brewing Company (Laytonsville, MD)

Why We Love It: Waredaca Brewing is a lovely spot with a fascinating history as a brewery. This farm was originally a boys’ summer camp in the Maryland countryside. It has also been an active horse farm and event center.

But today, it mainly focuses on beer production. It’s a great day trip from Frederick, just down the road from Silly Yak near Damascus. The outdoor seating area is beautiful and full of character.

The beers are good, and they serve up seltzer and lemonades, both of which we’ve tried and enjoyed.

Ranking: 3.72

8. Springfield Manor (Thurmont, MD)

Why We Love It: Springfield Manor sits 15 minutes north of Frederick on Route 15 towards Thurmont. It’s a lovely place with a lot going on.

Springfield Manor is a historic estate on an elevated plateau next to the Catoctin Mountains. Today, it serves as an inn, a wedding and events venue, a distillery, a winery, and a brewery. It’s one of the most interesting places to stay around Frederick.

But its best feature is the views from the outdoor seating area, which is the main reason we love it.

The craft beers are great; if your wife or girlfriend prefers wine, you can visit, and you’ll both be happy!

Ranking: 3.65

9. Liquidity Aleworks (Mt Airy, MD)

Why We Love It: If you are making a day trip to Mount Airy, then consider stopping in Liquidity Aleworks for some craft beers.

Mount Airy has a quaint downtown, and Liquidity Aleworks is in the heart of it on Main Street, located in what used to be a bank. It’s a bustling high energy place on weekends, and the beers are great.

The Walker’s On Main food truck is a permanent fixture at the brewery and serves the best burgers in town. Perfect!

10. Frey's Brewing Company (Mt Airy, MD)

Why We Love It: If you like farm breweries out in the countryside, Frey’s Brewery near Mount Airy is another brewery near Frederick you should try.

Frey’s setting is idyllic. Set in a valley surrounded by fields and hills, the large outdoor patio is one of our favorite places to enjoy craft beer. Frey’s also has a converted barn for indoor seating.

Frey’s not only produces beer, wine, hard seltzer, and mead, but also makes cocktails from all of them.

They recently started wine tours that include off-road vehicle rides and tastings, which Nicole and I plan to do!

Ranking: 3.50

11. Red Shedman Farm Brewery (Mt Airy, MD)

Why We Love It: Red Shedman Farm Brewery is the business partner of Linganore Winecellars, located between Mount Airy and Frederick. Both are long-established entities in the area, highly popular, and great places to visit.

Unfortunately, the Red Shedman Brewery suffered a significant fire in September 2024. To their credit, they’ve kept the business going, continuing to produce beer and use the rest of the Linganore property to host guests.

Note that while this is a great place to visit, the current Red Shedman taproom is only open on Saturdays and Sundays from 12-6pm.

Ranking: 3.61

12. Prospect Point Brewing (Frederick, MD)

Why We Love It: This is another farm brewery but very close to Frederick. Prospect Point is ~4 miles and 10 minutes from downtown Frederick and very easy to reach if you are in the city.

Prospect Point is a place where you can bring your kids and dog, sit outside, and enjoy craft beer. It is on Carroll Farms and has beautiful countryside views from the outdoor seating area. Weekends usually include food trucks and live music.

Even on an indoor day, you can still visit Prospect and enjoy their comfortable taproom.

What Makes a Great Brewery to Visit?

The popularity of local breweries and craft beer has exploded in recent years. The craft beer market now accounts for 24.7% of the US beer market.

The concept of a great brewery is simple: brew some great craft beers and provide visitors with a comfortable environment to hang out and enjoy them.

Nicole and I visit them frequently, and it’s part of what we love about Fredrick and the brewery scene in Bend, Oregon.

That said, here are the criteria we used to rank the Frederick MD breweries below:

The quality of the beers (mostly taste)

What's New in 2025/2026 in the Frederick Brewery Scene

As usual, there were some openings, closings, and upgrades in the Frederick brewery community in 2025.

Sandbox Brewhouse opened in May 2025 in the facility that was the original Rockwell Brewery. Rockwell has now moved permanently to its larger Riverside location.

The biggest upgrade to a Frederick brewery was probably RAK Brewing, which upgraded its tasting room and formed a new partnership with DOP Pizza and now share a home.

(This was a game-changer for Nicole and me; it’s now our go-to spot in Frederick for pizza and beer after a hike or bike ride!)
