1. Juniper Preserve (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: You’ll love this resort if you are a golfer (Glenn ranks it the best golf course in Bend, Oregon). But this is a special place for anyone looking for a luxury resort in Bend, OR.

This high-end resort used to be called Pronghorn Resort, but rebranded in 2022 to Juniper Preserve (though the golf courses are still named ‘Pronghorn‘).

There’s a lot to love about Juniper, set in the Oregon high desert just outside Bend. Besides the golf, the spa, restaurants, and pool areas are top-end and fabulous.

It feels boutique, while spacious and full of Oregon backcountry character. This would be our top choice for anyone looking for a romantic escape or luxury resort in Bend.

2. Brasada Ranch (Powell Butte, OR)

Why We Love It: About 25 minutes outside of Bend, in the Oregon backcountry, is the fabulous Brasada Ranch resort.

This award-winning luxury resort has a ranch vibe in the high desert, with upscale cabins and bungalows for accommodations and hard-to-beat sunset views.

The activities are plenty, including a spa, horseback riding, and a golf course that is among the best in the Bend area.

Brasada Ranch is perfect for romantic couples or a family trip wanting the full Bend resort experience.

Why We Love It: Sunriver is more than a resort; it’s an entire community.

Just south of Bend, Sunriver Resort has been a destination for families and a retirement and vacation home community since 1969. It consistently wins awards from major publications.

Sunriver has just about everything you would ever want to do for a Central Oregon vacation- multiple golf courses, miles of bike trails, access to the Deschutes (including a marina with rentals), restaurants and breweries, and a variety of accommodations.

In fact, some of the best things to do around Bend can be found at Sunriver. It’s a great daytime destination for anyone visiting Bend.

Sunriver Resort is the best resort choice around Bend for families and groups who want to stay busy with lots of activities.

Why We Love It: If you are looking for a luxury resort in Bend and want to be closer to the city while still having access to everything Bend offers, Tetherow is a great choice.

Tethrow has become its own sub-section of Bend in southwest. It’s a stunning community of homes and vacation properties, with a championship golf course (one of the best in Bend).

There’s a variety of places to stay, including the Tetherow Lodges. But the abundance of vacation rentals makes it ideal for families and larger groups.

You’ll not only be 10 minutes from downtown Bend, but right on the Cascade Lakes highway, which leads to all the outdoor fun at Mount Bachelor and the Three Sisters Wilderness.

Why We Love It: Just 40 minutes north of Bend is a classic Pacific Northwest ranch resort that has been around for fifty years.

Black Butte Ranch Resort sits in a pristine spot among tall pines with views of all the major Cascade peaks.

It’s a great resort for families who want to enjoy the outdoors, or anyone who wants to relax in Oregon’s mountain beauty.

Accommodations are exclusively in privately owned vacation homes on the property, which can be easily rented on the resort website.

There are several great restaurants, two golf courses, a spa, and countless other outdoor activities, including tons of things to do for kids.

6. Eagle Crest Resort (Redmond, OR)

Why We Love It: Eagle Crest Resort is a sprawling vacation property just outside Redmond, OR.

It has the same Cascades Mountain setting as the other resorts on this list, with a wider selection of accommodation types (The Lodge or vacation rentals).

Eagle Crest has several restaurants, three very scenic golf courses, tennis, a spa, several pools, and lots of kids activities.

Your dollar will stretch further at Eagle Crest, so consider this resort if you want a longer stay or have a large family and still want a lot of the same amenities.

Why We Love It: If you are looking to stay in Bend proper but want to slightly upgrade your accommodation to a resort-type property, check out Riverhouse Lodge.

Located just minutes from downtown Old Bend, the Riverhouse Lodge is a rustic place with comfy rooms and a restaurant overlooking the Deschutes River.

Riverhouse is a great basecamp if you are visiting and plan to enjoy all the great things to do in Bend.

You’ll be close to all the downtown restaurants and bars, Drake Park, the Deschutes, and can easily launch from her to all the great hikes around Bend.

It is also adjacent to the Rivers Edge Golf Course if you are in Bend to play golf.

In this article, Nicole and I will share our recommendations for the best restaurants in Bend Oregon, today. These are the Bend restaurants that we love and we suggest for you regardless of whether you are visiting or a local.

1. Jackson's Corner (Bend, OR)

Category: Brunch + Casual

Why We Love It: Many people see Jackson’s Corner primarily as a breakfast spot or coffee shop, but it’s so much more. Just take a look at their tagline, “Brunch + Supper Served Daily,” and you’ll understand that Jackson’s is a fantastic choice any time of day.

Despite its casual vibe, there’s no restaurant that excites me more in Bend than Jackson’s Corner. The breakfast and brunch offerings are outstanding—possibly the best in Bend. While the supper menu is concise, it remains inviting.

Jackson’s focuses on farm-to-table dining and offers a selection of local beer, wine, and cocktails, along with a delightful bakery. Plus, its fabulous location on Delaware Avenue makes it even more appealing. What more could you ask for?

They now also accept reservations and allow online ordering for convenience.

2. Hawkeye and Huckleberry Lounge (Bend, OR)

Category: American

Why We Love It: Hawkeye and Huckleberry Lounge burst on the Bend restaurant scene in June 2024, and immediately became Nicole and me’s favorite place for dinner and drinks in Bend. It’s fabulous.

Hawk and Huck is the creation of celebrity chef Brian Malarkey and his brother James Malarkey. Brian has other restaurants across the West Coast, but the duo are Central Oregon locals.

It’s an upscale-casual type of place, with a farm-to-table menu and a heavy emphasis on steaks and local fish.

But what gets you most excited about this place is the vibe. It’s a cool place to visit and eat, and it has one of the best bars in Bend.

Make a reservation, especially on weekends. It’s already been discovered by everyone in Central Oregon.

3. DRAKE (Bend, OR)

Category: American

Why We Love It: DRAKE is an iconic restaurant in Bend, located on a prominent downtown corner, just a block from Drake Park and close to the Deschutes River. It stands out as one of Bend’s best spots for a meal.

The restaurant features an upscale interior while maintaining a casual vibe, making it particularly enjoyable to dine at a sidewalk table during the summertime.

No matter when or where you choose to eat, the food is consistently excellent, with classics such as The Bendie (an open-faced burger), grilled ribeye, and shrimp and grits.

DRAKE also boasts a fantastic bar, so you can visit just for the cocktails during Happy Hour if you’re in the mood. The DRAKE Old Fashioned is especially noteworthy.

4. Bosa (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Do you enjoy Italian cuisine? Who doesn’t? Bosa is not only considered Bend’s best Italian restaurant, but it could also be argued that it’s the best restaurant in Bend, regardless of cuisine.

Bosa is actually an Italian-French bistro that exudes a charming European vibe. The cozy dining room, located in a former bakery on Galveston Ave, is bright and sleek, featuring impeccable service and a fantastic menu.

The highlight of Bosa is undoubtedly the homemade pasta. With options like tagliatelle, fusilli, and rigatoni, all served in delectable sauces, it’s a must-try.

Pair your pasta with salads, focaccia, and a delightful Italian red wine for a truly divine meal right in downtown Bend.

Be sure to plan ahead, as securing a reservation at Bosa can be quite challenging.

5. Rancher Butcher Chef (Bend, OR)

Category: Steak

Why We Love It: Nicole and I often say this is our favorite restaurant in town, and it could easily be higher on this list.

Rancher Butcher Chef is a steak and seafood-forward restaurant in NorthWest Crossing that serves some of the best steaks in Bend. They focus on partnering with local ranchers and farmers, and have their own ranch: 7-Mile Creek Ranch in Fort Klamath, Oregon.

There are some great seafood options on the menu, but you come to RBC for steak. The starters, sides, and sauces are amazing, and the cocktail and wine lists are among the best in Bend.

You should also check out their sister property in downtown:BarRBC, a tapas-and-drinks lounge.

6. Ariana (Bend, OR)

Category: Modern

Why We Love It: If you’re looking for a special occasion restaurant in Bend, Ariana is the place to go.

Located in a charming bungalow on Galveston Avenue, Ariana is the town’s most upscale fine dining venue. The creativity of the dishes, combined with a commitment to local ingredients, makes dining at Ariana a truly special experience.

One of my favorite aspects of Ariana is the wine and cocktail list. Browsing through the pages of wine is even more enjoyable than choosing your meal.

Ariana is a family-run establishment that has been a part of Bend for 20 years. If you’re able to splurge on the Chef’s Table offering, you’ll be treated to one of the best meals available in Bend.

Reservations are highly recommended.

7. Yoli (Bend, OR)

Category: Korean

Why We Love It: Korean food is not for everyone. But if you like authentic Korean, it doesn’t get much better than Yoli.

In fact, this is the place to take friends or family who need to be introduced to proper Korean Food.

Also located right downtown in an obscure suite in the complex on the corner of Newport and Wall, Yoli delivers a bang of flavor with its contemporary Korean favorites.

The dinner menu has so many things you’ll want to try, or you can opt for the Chef’s Tasting Menu, which is occasionally available.

The food’s presentation is gorgeous, and Yoli has an impressive wine list with plenty of sake and Korean rice wine.

One important note: Yoli is closed on Saturdays!

8. The Sparrow Bakery (Bend, OR)

Category: Bakery

Why We Love It: Every town needs a proper bakery, and in Bend, that place is The Sparrow Bakery. You can smell The Sparrow before you even see it, and once you step inside, you’ll understand why.

The baked goods at The Sparrow are incredible—baguettes, croissants, and rolls—all made fresh in-house.

But The Sparrow is also a fantastic spot for breakfast or lunch, offering delicious bakery-themed sandwiches like the Monte Cristo, Bacon Breakfast Sandwich (with bacon, egg, avocado, and arugula), and my personal favorite, the Croque Monsieur.

Nicole and I have visited many times for breakfast, and my go-to order is the Bacon Breakfast Sandwich. It’s also located right on the NorthWest Crossing Farmer’s Market location, which we also visit often on Saturdays in the summer.

Pair your meal with The Sparrow’s coffee or other hot drinks, and you’ll have the perfect breakfast spot in Bend. It can get crowded, especially on weekend mornings, so try to visit during non-peak times if possible!

9. Wild Rose (Bend, OR)

Category: Thai

Why We Love It: Every town also needs a good Thai restaurant, and Bend has a fantastic option in Wild Rose.

Technically focused on Northern Thai cuisine (no Pad Thai or peanut-based dishes), but everything on the menu is full of flavor.

Wild Rose boasts a great vibe with its downtown location, just one block off Newport and two blocks from Drake Park. It tends to get crowded at dinnertime, so reservations are recommended. It’s also a wonderful lunch spot.

The menu features a diverse selection of appetizers, soups, shared plates, and ‘one-plate meals.’ I often find it challenging to make ordering decisions because there are so many tempting options to choose from.

Additionally, Wild Rose offers excellent Thai takeout in the Bend area!

10. McKay Cottage Restaurant (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: McKay Cottage has been Bend’s premier breakfast spot since 2006. It is consistently ranked among the best restaurants in the area, and diners rave about the place.

The breakfast menu can best be described as gourmet, featuring delectable options such as benedicts, stuffed French toast, pancakes, and various crepe dishes, all complemented by mimosas and other cocktails. McKay Cottage also serves lunch, available until 2 PM, focused mostly on sandwiches and salads.

The restaurant building itself dates back to 1906 and has a rich history, having served as a residence, café, and even a cigar bar.

Please note that McKay Cottage does not accept reservations. It is extremely popular and tends to get crowded, especially on weekends, so be prepared for a wait or try to arrive early.

11. Crux Fermentation Project (Bend, OR)

Category: Brewery

Why We Love It: Bend is known for its vibrant brewpub scene. If you’re visiting, it’s essential to take the time to explore some of the fantastic breweries in Bend.

Many of these breweries also serve food, making it fitting that we highlight at least one on this list that offers both great beer and delicious meals.

Our favorite brewery to have a meal is Crux Fermentation Project. Besides the high-quality craft beer and the outdoor tasting area with a few, there’s really good food.

Crux has its own food menu, but we usually opt for getting a meal from one of the two permanent food trucks:

El Sancho. Outstanding street tacos.
The Brown Owl. Burgers and BBQ.

If you are visiting Bend, be sure to have at least one meal at a brewery like Crux.

12. Zydeco Kitchen (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: A must-visit restaurant in Bend is Zydeco Kitchen, located downtown.

This Cajun/Creole-themed eatery boasts one of the best atmospheres in town, complete with a fantastic bar and a food and drink menu that gets you excited as soon as it’s handed to you.

The cocktails are sophisticated, and the dishes are bold. If you’re seeking an authentic Zydeco Cajun experience, the Jambalaya is a must-try. However, the Blackened Redfish, Steak Frites, and Grilled Jumbo Prawns are all excellent choices as well.

Zydeco Kitchen gained national attention when it was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives in 2021, when Guy Fieri visited Bend.

Reservations are highly recommended on weekends at Zydeco.

Bonus: The Podski Food Cart Lot

Why We Love It: If there is one dining experience uniquely associated with the town of Bend, it’s the food truck lots. Food Truck Lots combine all the great things about Bend: a focus on the outdoors, craft beer, and a diverse set of food options. This experience is a must-try for anyone visiting Bend.

For those who may not be familiar, the concept is simple: multiple food trucks gather at a semi-permanent location, often centered around a bar or other establishment that serves drinks, with a seating area.

This setup creates a casual and unique dining experience, offering a variety of food choices alongside local craft beer. There are many food truck lots in Bend, but one of our favorites is The Podski.

The Podski is conveniently located in downtown Bend and features an intriguing selection of food trucks serving everything from Mexican to Japanese dishes, including pierogis.

The venue has a great indoor/outdoor bar, making it a relaxed spot that feels like a perpetual picnic—perfect for returning time and again to try something new.

If you’re visiting Bend, be sure to get out and experience a food truck lot!

The Restaurant Scene in Bend Oregon

There’s a little bit of everything when it comes to Bend restaurants, which is part of what makes it so appealing. There are several upscale, high-end places, such as Ariana, that we consider “special occasion restaurants.”

However, on weekends, you’re more likely to find us dining at one of the many breweries in Bend, as many of them serve delicious food.

We love the wide range of cuisines available at restaurants in Bend. From Korean (Yoli) to Cajun (Zydeco) to homemade pasta at Bosa, the variety across the restaurants makes Bend’s food scene sneaky good.

Probably the signature dining experience in Bend is the food truck lots (a must-do if you are visiting).

These clusters of food trucks in a semi-permanent setting, usually accompanied by a bar with beer, are the ultimate in casual, outdoor, creative eating. There are many all over Bend.

Where The Best Restaurants in Bend are Located

The restaurants in Bend are scattered all over town, but there are clusters of venues in certain areas. It helps to have your bearings when choosing where to dine in Bend:

Downtown Bend. The downtown part of Bend, generally called ‘Old Bend,’ is a charming, walkable area with many Bend restaurants, including many on the list below. DRAKE, 900 Wall, and Zydeco are all in this area. You can stroll to Drake Park on a nice summer day after dinner.

Galveston Avenue. Across the Deschutes River at the south end of Drake Park, you travel onto Galveston Avenue. In recent years, this stretch has become the most prominent restaurant and brewery area. Ariana, Bosa, and many other great joints are along this stretch. Parking is a bit dicey.

Old Mill District. Old Mill is south of downtown and the primary hub for shopping, entertainment, and dining in Bend. There are plenty of good restaurants in Old Mill worth trying, including Lady Bird Society and Anthony’s.

Restaurants in Bend, OR - What's New in 2026?

If you follow coverage of the restaurant industry in Bend, you’ll mostly hear that 2025 was a tough year for Bend restaurants.

As expected, there were several closings. Some were short-term restaurants that showed initial promise, like Neighborhood Rotissierie and Boss Rambler Club.

But a few long-established restaurants shut their doors in 2025, like 900 Wall after 17 years.

The good news is that Bend is a vibrant place with a strong economy, and there an new restaurants opening every year. Here are some of the highlighted new restaurant openings in Bend in 2025:

At luxury, high-end resort courses around Bend, such as Pronghorn and Tetherow, you can expect to pay over $100, and possibly up to $200 during peak times.

However, we believe it’s worth it to treat yourself to a special round of golf at a place like this occasionally.

The great thing about golf in Bend is that there are some stunningly beautiful places to play golf at much more affordable rates.

We love Widgi Creek, Juniper Golf, and Lost Tracks, and all of these can be played for well under $100.

Why Play It: Located at the stunning Juniper Reserve 30 minutes north of Bend, the Prognhorn Golf Course features two golf courses that epitomize high desert golf.

One of the Pronghorn courses (the Tom Fazio Championship Course) is private. However, the equally beautiful and challenging Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is public and a must-play if you are a golfer in the Bend, Oregon area.

The Nicklaus course gets rave reviews and consistently ranks high on Oregon golf course lists and public course rankings in the US.

The course is characterized by its surrounding environment—native grasses, sandy desert landscapes, pine trees, and evergreen plants. The mountain views are stunning.

In-season rates can be pricey, but if you are a serious golfer in Bend, it’s worth splurging for a round at Proghorn.

Why Play It: You won’t find Widgi Creek Golf Club ranked super high on any golf course rankings (relative to others on this list). But we love it.

In fact, we consider it the ‘home course’ for Bend residents who mostly play public golf. Located prominently on the Cascades Lakes Highway on the southwest side of town, it epitomizes Bend, Oregon Golf. Tree-lined fairways, mountain views, and a laid-back atmosphere.

It’s also a challenging and interestingly laid-out golf course. The fairways are narrow, and accurate drives are a must. Several holes have water.

Widgi Creek is also home to a 10-court pickleball facility.

Rates at Widgi are very reasonable, and there are membership options available for those who want to play frequently.

Why Play It: First, it should be clear that Brasada Canyons is a course only open to members and resort guests. You have to stay at the resort to play the course.

But it certainly belongs on this list. The views!

Brasada is a pristine central Oregon golf course about 30 minutes northeast of Bend, which might have the best views of any course in the state.

Brasada consistently ranks among the top courses in Oregon lists. The facilities are top-notch, and the overall golf experience is dreamy.

Juniper has been around since the 1950s, but has had multiple renovations over the years to keep it fresh. The Three Sisters, Mount Bachelor, and Broken Top seem to constantly in view as you traverse the course.

If you are a a local golfer in Bend or Redmond, Juniper also has some great membership options.

6. Lost Tracks Golf Club

Why Play It: Another Bend golf course virtually built into the town’s fabric is River’s Bend Golf Course. In fact, if you’ve driven anywhere around the north-central part of town, you’ve probably caught a glimpse of one of the holes.

But River’s Edge is still a golf experience that immerses you in nature. Utilizing the Deschutes River, the surrounding forest, and many of the creatures that live there, River’s Edge is all about the outdoors.

River’s Edge is a member of the Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP), an organization committed to preserving the environment.

You’ll love the golf course as well. It is always meticulously cared for and in excellent condition, and it could easily be higher on this list.

8. Old Back Nine

Why Play It: There are so many things to do in Bend, one of the main reasons we and many other Bend residents love it. Golf is merely one of many outdoor activities you can enjoy.

The biking, fishing, skiing, and hiking around Bend make it an outdoor lover’s paradise.

What if you don’t want to spend a whole day playing golf? What if you are a visitor to Bend, OR, and your days are limited? Maybe you want to split a day between golf and some other activity?

Look no further than the Old Back Nine Golf Course in southeast Bend. This beautiful nine-hole course set within the pine forest of Bend is perfect for a quick round that won’t take all day.

The BEST Hikes Near Bend Oregon, Can’t Miss Stunners!

It’s hard to find a place with a greater diversity of amazing hikes than Bend. Of all the fantastic outdoor things to do around Bend, simply heading out on a hike is probably our favorite.

In this article, Nicole and I list what we consider the Best Hikes near Bend, Oregon, and give you all the info you need to enjoy them as we have.

Keep in mind, building a list like this is impossible. Bend has many of the best hikes in Oregon. Ranking them is subjective and personal.

Part of the reason there are so many amazing Bend hikes is that there are multiple areas around Bend with beautiful natural scenery.

The Cascade Lakes / Three Sisters Wilderness is a wonderland with enough beautiful hikes to last a lifetime. But the Misery Ridge hike at Smith Rock is also magical and totally different, as are the hikes in the Oregon Badlands.

Between the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Buttes, Bend’s ancient volcanic history also offers fascinating hiking landscapes.

Plus, despite being in a high desert environment, there are plenty of hikes near Bend that involve water and getting wet.

1. Green Lakes / Soda Creek Loop Hike

Rating: Difficult

Why Do It: This is our favorite loop hike in our favorite area around Bend, the Cascade Lakes region. The Green Lakes are stunning and symbolic of the gorgeous lakes in the high country above Bend.

While there are several routes to reach Green Lakes, we suggest the Green Lakes / Soda Creek Loop Trail. This is a rather long hike, but a stunner that makes a loop starting and ending from the Green Lakes trailhead.

This hike also offers plenty of views of South Sister, Broken Top, and Mount Bachelor. An optional 2.1-mile spur to Moraine Lake is highly recommended.

This is a popular trail starting from a busy parking lot, so plan accordingly. You’ll need a Day Pass or Northwest Forest Pass to park and a Central Cascades Wilderness Permit to hike between June 15 and October 15.

2. Tam McArthur Rim Trail

Rating: Difficult

Why Do It: You could easily rate this the most epic hike near Bend, or in all of Oregon. No other hike gives you the experience of being in the Three Sisters Wilderness and views of so many stunning peaks as the Tam McArthur Rim hike.

The hike starts from Three Creeks Lake (beautiful itself), at high elevation, and only goes higher. This means snow along the trail, even into late summer.

But the views of Broken Top, the Three Sisters, and Mt. Bachelor are stunning. On a clear day, Nicole and I have easily seen Mt. Washington, Three-Fingered Jack, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, and Mt. Rainier. Fabulous!

If you can get a wilderness pass late in summer for this hike, do it!

3. Smith Rock - Misery Ridge Loop Trail

Rating: Difficult

Why Do It: The Bend area has so many phenomenal hikes in beautiful places. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a more stunning area than Smith Rock State Park. The Misery Ridge Loop Hike at Smith Rock is the signature hike in the area, and if you are a visitor to the Bend area, it’s a must-do.

It’s a challenging hike, with almost 1,000 feet in elevation gain up and over the Misery Ridge. But the total distance is not too bad (about 4 miles), and the rewarding viewpoints make it all worthwhile.

The Smith Rock area has a distinctive terrain shaped by the Crooked River. The top is a great place to eat lunch, and on the back side, you’ll see the interesting Monkey Face rock and likely lots of rock climbers.

This hike starts and ends at Smith Rock State Park’s main parking lot and trailhead. You need an Oregon State Park Pass, which you can buy in advance or onsite.

4. Broken Top and No Name Lake

Rating: Difficult

Why Do It:

Another hike in the Three Sister Wilderness. Broken Top is a peak that lies just underneath the Three Sisters, which contain the glacier-fed green No Name Lake at the summit. A stunning hike with amazing views.

The hike is challenging. You’ll do about 6 miles out and back and climb 1,400 feet up Broken Top Mountain.

The most challenging part of the hike might be getting to the trailhead. The Broken Top Crater Trailhead sits on a poorly maintained forest road that is often closed. If it’s open, you’ll need a high-clearance vehicle to drive there.

You can alternatively do this hike from the Todd Lake Trailhead, but this almost doubles the hike’s distance.

You’ll also need a Cascades Wilderness Permit for this hike from June 15 to October 15.

5. Ray Atkeson Trail at Sparks Lake

Rating: Easy

Why Do It: For an easier hike that also provides a great introduction to the Cascade Lakes area near Bend, check out the Ray Atkeson Loop Trail at Sparks Lake. This relatively easy and short trail packs in a lot of scenery.

Sparks Lake is one of the prominent Cascade Lakes, and on this trail, you pass multiple vistas over the lake with South Sister and Broken Top in the distance. The trail itself travels through lodgepole pine, and you’ll notice interesting lava-formed rocks.

The Ray Atkeson Trail actually has multiple loops. You can decide which ones to do or do both of them. This trail starts from the Sparks Lake Day Use area, which can get crowded during busy times, and you’ll need a day-use parking pass.

6. Deschutes River Trail

Rating: Easy

Why Do It: The Deschutes River Trail is another trail that almost anyone can hike. It is well-maintained and follows the Deschutes River throughout the entire Bend area.

This trail offers an endless number of routes and hikes, as it’s accessible from 8-10 spots within the Bend area. A popular place to start is the Meadows Day Use Area in south Bend. From here, you can hike further south toward Dillon Falls and Benham Falls or north toward town.

Old Mill, Tumalo State Park, and Dillon Falls are other popular places to access the trail and begin a hike.

Most of the trail is relatively flat, though you’ll climb to an occasional overlook.

7. South Sister Summit

Rating: Very Difficult

Why Do It: Only for advanced hikers! South Sister is the third-highest peak in Oregon, and it can be hiked without requiring technical climbing skills. However, the hike is no joke – a 12+ mile adventure with 5,000 feet of elevation gain. There is scrambling, switchbacks, and sandy areas…enough to challenge even strong hikers.

If you are up for it, can plan accordingly, and are acclimated, you’ll be rewarded with an epic hike. The views are tremendous, and from the summit, it feels like you can see the entire Cascade range, including Mount Jefferson, Mount Hood, and Mount Adams. (Many of the same peaks you see when flying into Redmond/Bend.)

You’ll want to start early, bring plenty of water, and bring high-energy snacks for this trek. Check the weather in advance and watch it carefully; this is one hike you don’t want to be on during a storm.

8. Trail of the Molten Lava (Newberry)

Rating: Easy

Why Do It: The Newberry National Volcanic Monument is one of the a must-do active ities in Bend. It’s a place of natural wonder shaped by volcanic eruption 75,000 years ago.

There are a series of trails in the area, but an easy trail that gives you a great introduction to the area is the paved Trail of the Molten Lava. The short ~1 mile trail starts and ends from the Lava Lands Visitor Center and is suitable for anyone (approximately 1/3 of the trail is universal accessible).

You’ll see fascinating landscapes with interpretive signs that tell the ancient history of how these lands were created. Along the way, there’s a great viewpoint of the Cascade Range in the distance.

9. Matthieu Lakes Loop Trail (via PCT)

Rating: Moderate

Why Do It: This is another loop hike in the Three Sisters Wilderness, but in a very different area with a different vibe. Departing from Lava Lake Camp Trailhead, about 1 hour northwest of Bend, this hike utilizes the Millican Crater Trail, Lava Camp Lake Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) to create a stunning loop trail.

You’ll encounter ancient lava flows, both the South and North Matthieu Lakes, and gorgeous vistas that give you a feel for what hiking the PCT is all about. On clear days, Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington, and Three-Fingered Jack can all be seen.

Insect repellant is recommended, and a wilderness pass is required if you do this hike between June 15 and October 15.

Both lakes have designated campsites if you want to turn this hike into a backpacking trip.

10. Pilot Butte

Rating: Moderate

Why Do It: One of Bend’s more interesting topographies is
Pilot Butte, a volcanic cinder cone formed 200,000 years ago that now sits right in the middle of downtown. It serves as a landmark for residents and visitors, orienting them wherever they are in the city.

Hiking to the top of Pilot Butte is well worth it. The view of the Cascade Range from there is one of the best in the city, especially at sunset. The hike up is moderately steep but generally not strenuous.

Be warned: You can also drive to the top of Pilot Butte (and many do every day). However, this still makes it a worthwhile hike; parking is easy and free, and you can beat the location (right in downtown Bend!).

11. Todd Lake Loop

Rating: Moderate

Why Do It: If you are looking for an easy hike the whole family can do in the Cascades Lake area, then the

Todd Lake Loop is perfect. Todd Lake is in the same area as Sparks Lake and Devils Lake, a beautiful spot right underneath the Sisters Mountains with gorgeous views of Mount Bachelor.

This was the first hike I took my kids on in Bend. It’s a gentle, short loop around the lake with postcard photos in every direction. While you need a Day Pass or Northwest Forest Pass to park, if you are here in summer, you don’t need a Wilderness Permit as you do in most of the Three Sisters Wilderness.

The Todd Lake area can get crowded quickly, and parking can be tight, so try to get there early.

12. Tumalo Mountain

Rating: Difficult

Why Do It: If you don’t mind an intense climb,
Tumalo Mountain is a classic Bend hike with dramatic, rewarding views. Tumalo sits basically across from Mount Batchelor, and the summit views of Batchelor, Three Sisters, and Broken Top are iconic.

The two-mile climb to the top feels straight up; you’ll climb 1,400 feet up this volcanic peak. Tumalo is a trendy winter snowshoe venue, and while I’ve never done it, locals rave about the experience of snowshoeing up Tumalo on a crisp winter day.

Parking for the trailhead is located at the Dutchman Sno-Park, which requires a permit from November to April.

13. Steelhead Falls

Rating: Easy

Why Do It: More of an excursion than hike, Steelhead Falls is an off-the-beaten path spot on the Deschutes River that is all about getting wet.

The hike is only about 0.5 miles long and starts just west of Terrebonne, north of Bend. It takes you to a beautiful set of falls on the Deschutes and one of the best swimming holes in Central Oregon.

Do this on a warm day, bring a picnic and your swimwear. You can cliff jump into the water, swim up to the falls, and explore the canyon. There’s an option to continue down the trail down the river if you want to enjoy more

Things to Consider When Hiking Around Bend

As you consider where to hikes around Bend, here’s some important general information about these hikes that will help you prepare.

Weather. Bend enjoys a high desert climate, which means plenty of clear days and bountiful sunshine. But Bend does get storms in both summer and winter, and they can be severe. Check the weather forecasts in advance, especially if you are heading on an extended hike deep into the backcountry.

Parking. Depending on the hike you choose, the parking situation at the trailhead can be busy. In the Cascade Lakes area, where many of the Bend hikes below begin, parking lots at trailheads fill up very fast on weekends. Get there early and have a backup plan if your planned parking lot is full. Also, read below for more on parking permits.

Seasons and Snow. The conditions of the hikes in this list can vary tremendously throughout the year. Some higher-elevation areas, like the Cascade Lakes/Three Sisters Wilderness, are virtually under snow from fall until late spring.

Summer time is amazing and usually great for all the hikes below. For other times of the year, the best advice is to check the status of roads, parking lots, and trails online before heading out.

Passes and Permits Needed for Hiking Around Bend

Understanding the appropriate pass and permit needed for parking and simply accessing a hiking area is important and can be confusing, especially for visitors.

Here is a summary of the permits that might be needed, and for we indicate what you need for each hike above.

Day Use Pass. Many National Forest Recreation areas (such as Sparks Lake or Tumalo Falls) require a Day Use Pass. This pass costs $5 and can be purchased onsite or online in advance.

Northwest Forest Pass. This is an annual pass good at all National Forest Recreation sites in Washington and Oregon. It is basically a way to buy Day Use Passes for a year in advance (and avoid the hassle each visit). If you are a local or plan to visit more than a few sites, it’s well worth buying. Purchase Online.

Central Cascades Wilderness Permit – Day Use. Many of the best hikes around Bend are in the Central Cascades Wilderness / Three Sisters Wilderness area. This includes many of the Bend hikes below. You need a permit in advance if you plan to hike in this area between June 15 and October 15. Note: these sell out fast, especially in the best areas.

Nicole and I love the brewery scene in Bend, and visit them often. So in this article, we list what we believe are the Best Breweries in Bend, OR.

1. Crux Fermentation Project (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Crux Fermentation was the first brewery I ever visited in Bend, and it incorporates everything amazing about Bend beer. They serve a wide selection of tasty craft beers, and their indoor and outdoor tasting areas are described as ‘playgrounds.’

The outdoor area at Crux is particularly appealing, as it has a great view of the Cascades and Three Sisters. It’s a great place for families and pets or just to hang out and enjoy the great Bend sunshine.

Another thing we love about Crux is the food options. Their kitchen serves sandwiches, salads, and pretzels, and there are often food trucks with yummy options like tacos.

Crux now has an urban Portland location to check out as well.

2. Deschutes Brewery (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Deschutes Brewery is the original and a Bend mainstay. Founded in Bend in 1988, it has grown to become a national brand. We see Deschutes Beer served in bars in Frederick, Maryland, all the time.

In fact, if you are a visitor to Bend, you almost have to visit Deschutes as an attraction. You’ll be treated to incredible beer, a great tasting room, and a fascinating tour.

The main tasting room and beer garden at the plant is the home of Deschutes, but you should also visit the Public House in downtown Bend if you get a chance. It’s the original home and brewery and now a great place for beers and food. They also have a Public House in Portland.

3. 10 Barrell Brewing Company (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: The guys at 10 Barrell Brewing portray themselves as ‘those guys,’ and yes, the brewery definitely gives off a different vibe. But despite their quirkiness, the beer is darn good, and both tasting rooms are great to visit.

10 Barrell has a West End location (right on Galveston Ave next to Sunriver) and an East End location more on the outskirts. Note that the downtown location can get crowded. They are also in Portland and Boise.

They brew some delicious beers! Try the All Ways Down (double IPA with citrus) and the Camp Vibes (golden ale). 10 Barrell has also expanded its beverage line into the Pub Ice brand, a line of flavored carbonated cocktails, and a wide variety of canned cocktails.

4. Bend Brewing Company (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: This is the local’s downtown hangout spot. Bend Brewing Company has been around since the 90s and sits right on the Deschutes River in downtown Bend. You can virtually see the river as your beer is poured.

Bend Brewing has an indoor brew pub that’s great for watching sports. But it’s even better to visit on a warm day when you can hang out outside by the river and enjoy their beer. There is often live music and a full menu (try the Smash burger).

As far as beer, they usually are pouring 10-12 local brews and you will sure to love most of them.

5. Sunriver Brewing Company

Why We Love It: The Beer! Multiple things go into making a great brewery experience, but obviously, a key factor is the quality of the beer. Here is where Sunriver stands out. Their brews are our favorite in Bend. Try the Sun Streak Pilser or the Rippin New Pale Ale.

But there is more to Sunriver than the delicious beers. Unfortunately, Sunriver closed its Galveston Ave location in 2025 due to some planned renovation of the building.

But the Eastside Pub is a great spot in Bend, as is the main Brewery in Sunriver. Both serve high-quality pub food (great burgers and sandwiches) to go with the excellent Sunriver beers.

6. Monkless Belgian Ales (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Americans seem to have an unusual (and, some say, declining) affinity for Belgian beers. But brewers like the ones at Monkless Belgian Ales in Bend are doing what they can to carry the flag for Belgian Beers.

Monkless Belgian Beers is doing it well. They’ve moved to a larger production facility in recent years and, in 2024, opened up a super cool new taproom called The Abbey, connected to the brewery on the east side of town.

This is in addition to their established Brasserie location in Old Mill, which is also an excellent restaurant for European food.

7. Van Henion Brewing (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Now, this is good beer! We all have our favorite beers, and for me, it’s crisp, sharp German-style lagers and pilsners. That’s what you’ll get at Van Henion Brewing.

Van Henion focuses on German-style larger and Pacific Northwest Ales. The Helles Lager, Kolsch, Pilsner, and Schwarzbier are all excellent.

Van Henion has a pub-like tasting room and a heated outdoor seating area. Plus, two food trucks are reliably on site. It’s a great brewery overall!

8. Boneyard Beer (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Boneyard Beer has been around since 2010 and now has two locations in Bend.

The original taproom is on Lake Place, not far from the Old Bend neighborhood. The Boneyard Pub is a great new venue on the north side of town. It has tons of seating and great food as well.

The Boneyard tap list is an eclectic mix of beers, including some interesting flavored beers to go with standard lagers, pils, and IPAs.

9. GoodLife Brewing Company (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: With so many great breweries in Bend, it’s hard to pick favorites. But we love GoodLife Brewing. It’s a place that is 100% Bend, Oregon, that we’ve come to appreciate more and more in 2025.

The selection of brews at GoodLife is great, with something for everyone, and they tend to be well-balanced and easy to drink.

GoodLife announced on Reddit in 2025 that new management had taken over, and that new investments and improvements were on the way. This has us excited!

The Southside Bend tasting room is full of character, and the spacious outdoor Biergarten is great on beautiful Bend days. You’ll love the pub grub as well, yummy appetizers that go great with craft beer. Try the Pub Nachos or the Wings.

In short, a visit to GoodLife represents everything that’s amazing about the Bend brewery scene!

10. The Ale Apothecary (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Sour beers! I was actually recommended this Bend brewery when I ordered a Saison at GoodLife (right next door).

“If you like sour beers, why are you hitting up Ale Apothecary?”

Sour beers aren’t for everyone. But if you’re ready to try something new, visit The Ale Apothecary.

They focus on handcrafting beers with unique ingredients using traditional methods. The tasting room is eclectic and interesting. There is a great food truck outside, and you can walk to GoodLife around the corner to hit them both up.

Ranking: 4.23

11. Bevel Craft Brewing (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: If you find yourself on the southeast side of town, make your way to a newer brewery in Bend – Bevel Craft Brewery.

Similar to Sunriver, people rave about Bevel beer. We love it, too, as the brewers at Bevel are clearly not shy about creating bold, flavorful lagers and ales. Their signature beers are their IPAs, and there are plenty to put into your tasting flight.

It’s a cozy and inviting tasting room with a lovely outdoor seating area that makes you feel like you’re in a friend’s backyard.

Bevel also has one of the best beer clubs in Bend, the Bevel Beer League, which offers cool perks such as $4 beers every day!

12. Cascade Lakes Brewing Company (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Cascade Lakes Brewing Company is another original brewery in Central Oregon. Since 1994, Cascade has been serving craft beer in Bend and is still a not-for-profit brewery.

Their primary location in Bend is on the east side of town, on Reed Market (note: the west-side location on Century Blvd closed in early 2024). They have another pub on 7th Street in Redmond.

You’re also likely to see Cascade Lakes beer sold in stores and served in restaurants all over the Pacific Northwest, as their distribution network has become quite extensive over the past 30 years.

13. Upp Liquids - formerly Immersion Brewing (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: The brewery previously known as Immersion Brewing was rebranded in 2025 to UPP Liquids, led by Tonya Cornett, a Bend beer industry veteran.

It remains in the same great location that Nicole and I often frequent, the Box Factory between Industrial Way and Arizona Ave.

UPP stands for ‘United People + Places’, and a taste of any of the beers will immediately demonstrate that these people know what they are doing.

The Pub Menu is great, and you get the feeling UPP Liquids is going to be around a long time in Bend.

14. Bridge 99 Brewing (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Bridge 99 is a small brewery on the scene in Bend since 2013. They brew classic Oregon craft beers and have a cozy tap room that’s a joy to visit.

The obvious question about Bridge 99 is, “Where did the name come from?”. According to their website, the name comes from a bridge on a forest service road over the Metolius River near Camp Sherman, Oregon.

Bridge 99 is always serving a wide variety of craft beers, serves pizza and bar food, and frequently has events like trivia. Check them out!

15. Spider City Brewing Company (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Another long-time member of the Bend brewing community is Spider City Brewing. You can find them in two locations in Bend: the taproom at their brewery in southeast Bend or their downtown tasting room on Minnesota Ave.

I never visited Spider City until I came across this Visit Central Oregon video about it. As you’ll learn, it’s a business started by three women who’ve been super successful.

Spider City is a cozy, cool place to visit, and what stands out is the quality of their beers.

Ranking: 3.79

16. Worthy Brewing Company (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Worthy Brewing Company was the first established brewery on Bend’s east side, opening in 2012. Today, they have two locations, and to me, they are very different experiences.

The Main Pub on the east side is an ample, sprawling space with multiple bars, a great food menu, and even a Hopservatory that offers visitors a view of the night sky.

Worthy also has a downtown Beers and Burgers location right on Brooks Street across from Drake Park. This is my preferred Worthy location, a prime spot in downtown Bend, also serving burgers, tacos, and Wonderland Chicken.

The extraordinary range of things to do in Bend, Oregon, is part of what makes it a truly special place. It’s the reason Nicole and I love it so much.

The breathtaking scenery and untamed wilderness, combined with the vibrant mountain town atmosphere and numerous breweries and restaurants, make Bend, Oregon, a gem for locals and a sneaky great destination for visitors.

Creating a list of the Best Things to Do in Bend is particularly challenging due to the numerous experiences to choose from. But that is what Nicole and I do in this article.

Below we share the top Bend activities you should consider if you are visiting, or check out if you are a local

1. Float Down the Deschutes River

Category: Outdoor

Why Do It: The heart and soul of Bend (and its namesake) is the Deschutes River. The town is centered on this river, as are many activities.

One of the greatest joys of being in Bend during summer is the chance to float down the Deschutes through town. You can do this via multiple methods – tube, kayak, SUP. But tubing down the Deschutes is for anyone and probably the purest way to enjoy the river.

We recommend doing this with Tumalo Creek and Kayak offers tube rentals right by the river in Old Mill and can handle the logistics of shuttling you back. Their website has all the details.

Another alternative is heading to Sunriver south of town, especially if you want to SUP down a dreamy, calm section of the Deschutes. Bliss!

2. Newberry National Volcanic Monument

Category: Park

Why Do It: A can’t-miss attraction near Bend is the fascinating Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Located within the Deschutes National Forest, Newberry encompasses a variety of natural wonders, all shaped by a volcanic eruption that formed the Newberry Caldera 75,000 years ago.

Start at the Lava Lands Visitor Center, where, after getting your bearings, you can walk along the Sun-Lava Paved Path and witness fascinating lava fields. You can also check out the Lava Butte Interpretive Site, standing atop an ancient lava butte.

There’s much more to Newberry to explore, but a final recommendation is driving to the top of Paulina Peak. This observation area is approximately a 30-minute drive up from Route 97, offering spectacular views of the entire Newberry area.

3. Visit the Cascade Lakes

Category: Outdoor

Why Do It: Sticking with the outdoor theme around Bend, there is no better way to see the beauty surrounding Bend than by heading down the Cascade Lakes Scenic Highway. Traveling southwest out of Bend, this highway takes you into the heart of the scenic Deschutes Forest, towards the Three Sisters Mountains, and in the vicinity of multiple pristine mountain lakes.

First, it’s essential to know that this seasonal road usually opens from May to November (depending on snow). Stopping at the Cascade Lakes Welcome Station on the way out of Bend is great for planning your trip and getting the proper pass (such as the Annual Northwest Forest Pass).

The byway will take you through breathtaking scenery, including views of Mt. Bachelor and the Three Sisters Mountains. You’ll also have access to multiple hikes, including favorites like the Ray Atkeson Loop at Sparks Lake and the Green Lakes Hike.

Other lakes you can visit from this byway include Todd Lake, Devils Lake, and Elks Lake. All have short hikes around them or places to get a quick and beautiful view.

4. Visit a Bend Brewery (or a few!)

Category: Food and Drink

Why Do It: Bend is known for many things, but one of them is beer. Bend is specifically known for its breweries. Much of the community, entertainment, and leisure revolve around them.

If you’re a fan of craft beer, we highly recommend visiting a brewery while in Bend. You can read our list of the best breweries in Bend, but if you can visit only one brewery, we recommend you make it Crux Fermentation Project. Crux has the beer, the setting, and the vibe that define what Bend is about.

Other great options are Deschutes (one of the pioneers in craft beer), GoodLife Brewing on the west side, and Bend Brewing Company right downtown on the river.

If you’re a beer lover, visiting Bend’s breweries deserves its own dedicated day or evening. The Bend Ale Trail might interest those who are truly passionate about craft beer.

5. Tumalo Falls

Category: Outdoor

Why Do It: Stunning falls! There are lots of waterfalls around Bend. But if you visit only one, make it Tumalo Falls. Located a short 25-minute drive west of Bend, it makes for a great excursion, picnic spot, or hike.

Tumalo Falls stand 97 feet in height with a majestic water flow in the Deschutes pine forest. You can view from the observation area adjacent to the parking area (fills up quickly during busy seasons), or you can make the short 0.5 mile hike to the top for even better views.

The Tumalo Falls Trailhead is also the launch point for more extended hikes into the Deschutes backcountry, and it is highly recommended for avid hikers.

A pass (either a Day Pass or Annual Pass) is required for visiting, which you can buy in advance or at the parking lot.

6. Skiing or Mountain Biking at Mount Bachelor

Category: Sports

Why Do It: Mount Bachelor is another natural icon of the Bend area. It’s also one of the premier outdoor venues around Bend, with various activities depending on the season.

In winter, Mt Bachelor is a major ski resort, ranked the 7th largest in North America with 101 runs and 12 lifts. Its ski season is usually long, from November to May. A vast network of Nordic trails also exists for cross-country skiers.

In Summer, Mt Bachelor becomes a fabulous hiking and downhill mountain biking venue. Mountain Biking at Mt Bachelor is a thrill, as you enjoy stunning views, beginner to very technical trails, and a rental shop to provide you with all the gear.

If skiing or mountain biking aren’t your thing, there are some great hikes up and around Mt Bachelor. Regardless of the time of year, Mount Bachelor needs to be on your Bend must visit list.

7. Green Lakes Hike

Category: Hike

Why Do It: There are many great hikes around Bend that could easily be on this list, but our favorite is the hike to Green Lakes in the Cascades area.

You can choose multiple itineraries in this area that take in these gorgeous mountain lakes. If you want a genuinely epic hike, we recommend the Green Lakes / Soda Creek Loop, a 12.5-mile journey that begins and ends at the Green Lakes trailhead. This hike takes you through a little of everything – pine forests, mountain lakes, volcanic peaks, pristine mountain lakes, and beautiful meadows.

There are several shorter hikes in this area. Frankly, you can’t go wrong with most. Do you want something shorter with the kids? Try the Ray Atkeson Loop Trail at Sparks Lake, or the Ancient Juniper + Flatiron Rock Loop in the Oregon Badlands.

Regardless of what you choose, your visit to Bend should include at least one epic hike (whatever that means for you).

9. Old MIll District

Category: Entertainment

Why Do It: Set along the Deschutes River just south of downtown, the Old Mill District is Bend’s center of entertainment. This complex has Bend’s premier shopping area, twelve restaurants (mostly set on the river), an IMAX movie theatre, and multiple art galleries.

The Old Mill District is also home to the Hayden Homes Amphitheater, a large outdoor concert venue with an impressive lineup of shows, concerts, and events.

Old Mill feels like the heart of Bend in many ways. It’s a great place to stroll, watch floaters down the Deschutes, take in an art gallery, and get a drink or meal.

10. Play a Round of Golf

Category: Sports

Why Do It: Bend is a sneaky-good golf destination. If you’re a golfer visiting Bend, we highly recommend playing a round at one of the local courses.

There are plenty of great Bend golf courses to choose from. One of our favorites, and the place we think offers the most authentic Bend golf experience, is Widgi Creek Golf Club.

A round of golf at Widgi is a pleasure. The course is situated right on the Cascade Lakes Highway, just outside of town, and is set amidst the pine forests of Central Oregon. It’s well-maintained and features an interesting layout, but it’s an affordable public course that’s as laid-back as Bend itself.

Maybe the finest golf course in the area is Proghorn. Proghorn Golf Club is semi-private, but you can play the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course as a non-member.

11. Mountain Biking at Phil's Trailhead

Category: Sports

Why Do It: Bend is known for its breweries, Cascade Lakes, volcanic peaks, and mountain biking. There’s no better place to experience mountain biking in Bend than Phil’s Trailhead.

This vast network of single-track trails takes you through the high desert forest of central Oregon. It is filled with trails suitable for novices and advanced technical riders.

You can map out a route in advance to your skill level, or do what we do and improvise as you go, following the well-marked trail and difficulty signs.

Phil’s network is also great because it is within riding distance of downtown. In fact, if you need to rent mountain bikes and other gear, we recommend hitting Pine Mountain Sports ride from Phil’s Trailhead.

If you want a guided mountain biking tour, check out Cog Wild. They can provide the entire package: bikes, equipment, a guide, and transportation.

The Phil’s network is not the only place to mountain bike in Bend. Check out the Rimrock Trail Area in southwest Bend.

12. Fly Fishing the Fall River

Category: Outdoor

Why Do It: On this list, we’ve discussed Bend’s reputation for breweries, hiking, biking, and cascade lakes. But no Bend activities list would be complete without Fly Fishing.

Multiple world-class fly fishing streams and rivers are in the vicinity of Bend, including the Deschutes, which runs right through town. The Crooked River and Metulious River are both less than one hour from Bend and are prime fly fishing spots.

If you must pick only one, we recommend the Fall River, which is 30 minutes southwest of town near La Pine. The Fall is a gentle, gorgeous, spring-fed river that feeds into the Deschutes. The upper stretches have very accessible spots that offer solitude, beauty, and large trout for catch-and-release.

If you need a guide for a half or full day of fly fishing on the Fall or any other great fly fishing destinations around Bend, there are several in town.

Check out Fly and Field Outfitters or Deep Canyon Outfitters. They have the gear, guides, and knowledge to provide a fantastic Fall River fly fishing experience.

13. Shevlin Park

Category: Park

Why Do It: Every city needs a good park, and Bend has several. Drake Park is the hub of downtown Bend on the Deschutes. Farewell Bend Park on the south side of town is similarly connected to Old Mill, a popular place to launch a float down the river.

But our favorite Bend city park is Shevlin Park on the northwest side of town. Shevlin is home to old-growth forests and Tumalo Creek and has a network of trails for walking, hiking, or biking.

You can do up to a 6-mile hike within this regional park, crossing Tumalo Creek and cresting a ridge with beautiful views. Shevlin also has multiple picnic areas with easy access, and in the evening, you’ll see many Bend locals walking their dogs around the park trails.

14. Smith Rock State Park

Category: Park/Hike

Why Do It: This should probably be higher on the list, but regardless, it’s a can’t-miss site when visiting Bend. Smith Rock State Park is a stunning landscape of towering rock peaks, deep canyons, wildflowers, and the Crooked River. It’s only a short 40-minute drive north of Bend near Terrabone.

You can enjoy Smith Rock with a short walk around the ample parking area at the park. But if you are up for a hike, we highly recommend tackling the Misery Ridge Loop Trail at Smith Rock, one of the best hikes around Bend.

This 4-mile loop trail takes you to the top of Misery Ridge in the heart of Smith Rock and back down along the river to the starting point. It offers stunning views, high desert landscapes, and a peek at the interesting Monkey Face rock formation. Be prepared—this hike has 1,000 feet of elevation gain!

You can also bike, camp, or picnic at Smith Rock. It is well worth spending at least half a day there during your visit to Bend.

15. The Last Blockbuster

Category: Attraction

Why Do It: Sometimes history just happens in your backyard. The Last Blockbuster (from a peak of 9094 stores) happens to be in Bend, Oregon. There will eventually be a time when few remember the physical video rental stores we visited to rent movies on VHS and DVDs physically. However, the transformation of the home movie industry from physical to streaming seems not far off to many of us. Visiting a Blockbuster store was a regular thing not long ago. Blockbuster Corporation (and later Dish Network, which acquired it in 2011) closed a massive number of stores after its 2010 bankruptcy. The Last Blockbuster Store, still open today, is owned by Debbie Tisher in Bend, and it allows visitors to see how the home video world used to work.

16. Hayden Homes Amphitheatre

Category: Entertainment

Why Do It: Technically part of the Old Mill District (above), the Hayden Home Amphitheatre deserves its own mention.

This venue is Oregon’s largest outdoor concert venue and is the heart of entertainment in Bend. Located right on the Deschutes River, it hosts ~50 shows yearly, primarily musical acts rocking on stage to a high-energy audience.

Check the events schedule and try to hit a show—events at Hayden generally during the summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day).

Bonus Item #1: Crater Lake National Park

Category: Outdoor

Why Do It: This is technically not an activity in Bend, but Crater Lake National Park is an easy day trip from Bend and deserves mentioning on this list.

Crater Lake is one of the most stunning natural settings you’ll find in the US. The result of a massive volcanic event 7,700 years ago, Crater Lake today is a huge, pristine, deep blue lake that sits in a caldera.

There are viewpoints all around the lake. You can hike in the area, hike to the lake, and even swim (highly recommended.

Crater Lake is a relatively easy 2 hour drive from Bend (depending on what entrance you use), and makes for a great day trip.

Bonus Item #2: Steelhead Falls

Category: Outdoor

Why Do It: If the above list is enough for you, here’s one more bonus attraction near Bend that combines the outdoors, hiking, and getting in the water. Steelhead Falls is an off-the-beaten-path spot, 40 minutes north of Bend near Terrebonne, that makes for a great outdoor water day, especially when the weather is warm.

It’s a half-mile hike to these falls on the Deschutes River, with the option to continue hiking further. But the falls alone are well worth the hike. Bring your swimwear if the weather is warm because this is a tremendous swimming hole.

There are also cliffs to jump off, which is a major thrill at this spot. Depending on your daring, you can swim and climb up to the falls.

But the breweries themselves have developed their own culture, many of which focus on outdoor tasting rooms that celebrate the spectacular weather and scenic views common to Bend.

Larry started Crux in 2012 after leaving Deschutes Brewing, and creating a brewery that don’t settle with ordinary.

Known for its non-traditional brewing techniques (like open fermentation and whole-leaf hops), Crux Fermentation Project continuously pushes the boundaries of what beer can be.

The name ‘Crux’ comes from its slang meaning – ‘the most difficult part’ of any situation.

Whether you’re into sours, IPAs, or barrel-aged magic, they have something that’ll blow your taste buds away. Some highlights:

As if the beers at Crux weren’t enough of a reason to visit, the views of the Cascades, especially from the outdoor tasting area, seal the deal.

In fact, the view of Mount Bachelor and the Three Sisters Mountains from Crux is one of the best in Bend.

While the indoor tasting area at Crux is fine, the outdoor area is a celebration. You’ll normally find it full of families, mountain bikers, and other beer lovers enjoying Crux beer and the Bend lifestyle.

Hungry? You can eat well at Crux either from their pub menu or from their on-site food trucks.

The Crux menu is strong, featuring sharables (pretzel, nachos, and boards), sandwiches (The Carver, Philly Cheese, and French Dip), and salads.

When Nicole and I visit (which is often, usually after a hike or bike ride), we typically get grub from one of the two permanent food trucks. Highly recommend you do the same.

1. Downtown Bend / Old Bend

Why Stay Here: This is our #1 recommended area to stay in Bend. This is especially true for first-time visitors.

If you are visiting Bend, chances are you’ll spend a lot of time enjoying the outdoor adventures outside town. But Bend is a fabulous mountain town, and staying downtown allows you to enjoy it fully.

Staying in this area enables you to walk to the many restaurants, shops, and breweries. Plus, you’ll be close to Drake Park and the Deschutes River, which are the heart of Bend.

Pro Tip: Try to stay west of Route 97 and closer to Drake Park.

2. River West

Why Stay Here: River West comprises the trendy neighborhoods on the west side of the Deschutes, located across from downtown Bend. This is still considered part of the heart of downtown, and a great place to stay if you are visiting.

You’ll find virtually no hotels in this area. However, these walkable and bikable neighborhoods offer numerous vacation rentals on Airbnb and VRBO, allowing you to stay in these vibrant neighborhoods.

River West is also home to Galveston Avenue, one of the best drags in Bend for restaurants, breweries, coffee shops, and food carts. If you can find a rental near Galveston Avenue, consider it a prime location.

Pro Tip: Consider locations further east near the Deschutes River, or anywhere close to Galveston Avenue, to make walking to venues easier from your rental.

3. NorthWest Crossing

Why Stay Here: Located in the Summit West neighborhood, this is a modern, planned community that is arguably the most popular place to live in Bend. Beautiful neighborhoods filled with families living the ‘Bend Lifestyle’.

This is another area with a limited number of hotels, but numerous great Airbnb options and vacation rentals.

You’ll be a bit farther from downtown Bend, but closer to the mountains. Northwest Crossing has its own very cool, vibey neighborhood where you can hang out. The Grove is a market hall located on this strip, featuring several local restaurants and coffee shops.

The main drag (NW Crossing St itself) extending west from Compass Park is a town center with more shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s the home of Sparrow Bakery, one of the best breakfast spots in Bend.

Pro Tip: If you are staying in NorthWest Crossing (or anywhere else in Bend for that matter) anytime between June and September, try to visit the NorthWest Crossing Farmers Market on Saturday mornings. It’s the best farmers’ market in Bend.

4. Old Mill District / Southern Crossing

Why Stay Here: Bend’s riverfront hub offers vibrant shopping, dining, and entertainment, making it the city’s liveliest area.

The Old Mill District features a variety of shops, restaurants, and breweries, along with the Hayden Amphitheatre, which hosts concerts year-round.

You’ll also be right by an essential stretch of the Deschutes River, perfect for tubing, SUP, or kayaking. Many start this journey at nearby Riverbend Park, and the Bend Whitewater Park is just downstream.

With plenty of hotel and vacation rental options, staying here puts you within walking distance of all the action. Including Deschutes Brewery, a must-visit brewery in Bend!

Pro Tip: You won’t experience much traffic in Bend. But if you do, it will be in this area. Plan on rush hour traffic if staying here.

5. Century West / Tetherow

Why Stay Here: If you are visiting Bend primarily to enjoy the outdoor attractions to the west, staying in Century West is a great option.

This stretch in southwest Bend extends along the Cascade Lakes Highway, providing easy access to the Cascade Lakes, the Three Sisters Wilderness, and Mount Bachelor.

In fact, if you are coming to Bend to ski at Mount Bachelor, this is the best area to stay.

As far as accommodations, there are several great hotel options, as well as plenty of vacation rentals in Century West. We stayed in an Airbnb rental in Century West many years ago and really loved being so close to the Cascades.

This is also the home of Tetherow Resort, a premier luxury golf resort in Bend, which makes for a great getaway, especially for golfers.

6. North Bend

Why Stay Here: The north and northeast sections of Bend include the very commercial Boyd Acres, and the residential Orchard District and Mountain View.

While none of these would be our first choice, the reality is that they are all options. Boyd Acres has lots of chain hotels. You’ll be closer to Redmond Airport, plus all the shopping districts in Bend.

Orchard District and Mountain View are lovely neighborhoods, and there are plenty of vacation rentals here often for lower prices than the west side of Bend.

Bend, Oregon, is no stranger to exceptional golf experiences, but few rival the opulence and world-class design of Pronghorn Golf Club at Juniper Reserve.

Nestled amid the rugged beauty of the high desert, this resort delivers not just one, but two incredible golf courses. It has a price tag to match, so are steep greens fees worth it?

Pronghorn is the home of two incredible golf courses. The Tom Fazio Championship Course is private and only available to members.

However, the Jack Nicklaus Signature Course is equally stunning and open to the public. I’ve played it several times, and this review will be based on this course open to anyone.

Pronghorn Golf Course: Basics

Pronghorn is located at the Juniper Reserve, a resort about 30 minutes northeast of Bend. It’s a fabulous high desert resort and a premier golf destination, one of the most luxurious resorts around Bend.

The Golf Experience at Pronghorn Golf Club

Pronghorn is more than just a place to tee off. If you include everything the Juniper Reserve resort has to offer, you can craft a sensational Oregon golf vacation.

But let’s focus solely on the golf experience associated with playing the Pronghorn Nicklaus course. Because for golfers, that’s a pretty unforgettable experience in itself.

When you arrive and check it, you’ll get much more of a private club vibe than a public course. The property is stunning, the pro shop and locker room are luxurious, and the practice areas are pristine.

There are nice touches everywhere, like water bottles in your state-of-the-art golf cart. The property is top-notch.

The Jack Nickalus Signature Course at Pronghorn

Set against the backdrop of Oregon’s high desert, the Jack Nicklaus course winds through ancient juniper trees, lava formations, and panoramic mountain vistas.

The dry climate and rugged terrain not only define its aesthetic but also shape its playability, offering firm conditions, fast greens, and a sense of seclusion that makes each round feel intimate and unique.

This is high desert golf at its finest—wild, refined, and utterly unforgettable.

Iconic #8 Hole with a Lava Tube guarding the green
Great Views of the Three Sisters

I’ve played multiple times, and here are my favorite holes:

Hole 8. A killer par five that stretches on forever. But a beautiful tee shot and views over the water across the landscape.

Hole 12. A relatively short par four but an awesome elevated green and a tight approach shot. Harder than it looks from the tee.

Hole 15. A long par five that is probably the most difficult hole (#2 handicap). The fairway wraps around a lake and challenges all your shots.

My Recent Round at Pronghorn Golf Course

I play Pronghorn Nicklaus recently in July 2025, arriving by myself on a hot Saturday. I got paired with a very interesting young man, a pilot from Seattle on vacation at Juniper with his family. We immediately hit it off and had a great round.

Playing the rust tees (normally the ‘blue’ tees), the course mostly got the better of me on the front nine, though I shot much better on the back nine.

The course conditions were exceptional. The greens were perfect, the pace very fast for a Saturday, and it’s the type of golf course you constantly want to snap a photo.

Pro Tip: The course is designed so that most of the best views of the mountain range are in the morning. By afternoon, the Insta-worthy tee shots are directly into the blinding sun.

Juniper Preserve - Stay and Play in Style

One of the best features of The Pronghorn Golf Club is its home resort itself. The Juniper Preserve offers an upscale escape with refined lodging options, including suites, townhomes, and the Juniper Preserve luxury residences.

Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or staying long-term, the resort elevates the experience.

If you want to make a weekend out of playing golf at Pronghorn, the Juniper Reserve offers:

Final Thoughts - Is Playing Pronghorn Worth Its Green Fees?

If you love golf, Pronghorn is a Central Oregon bucket list course. We have it #1 on our ranking of the top golf courses around Bend.

Depending on when you book your tee time, you’ll pay anywhere from $150 to $250 in greens fees. Is that a lot, or too much?

Paying upwards of $200 for a round of golf is not something I want to do every outing. But it’s also not unheard of. Golf is expensive.

If you’re a golfer, either a resident or visitor to Bend or Central Oregon, I’d encourage you to play the Nicklaus Course at Pronghorn. It’s the best example of high desert golf in the region.

(I’ll also note that Tetherow and Brasada Canyons, comparable course in the area, have similar greens fees).

Pronghorn Golf Club isn’t just one of the best golf courses in Bend—it’s a destination in itself.

Whether you’re looking for a high-end golf experience or simply soaking in the stunning high desert views, a round at Pronghorn is one for the memory books.

Why Book Here: This home is in the same Galveston Ave neighborhood, but larger. It has three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

It uses solar power for energy-efficiency, for those that are green focused. But maybe the best feature is the back deck and grassy backyard. Also includes a hot tub!
