It’s hard to find a place with a greater diversity of amazing hikes than Bend.  Of all the fantastic outdoor things to do around Bend, simply heading out on a hike is probably our favorite. 

In this article, Nicole and I list what we consider the Best Hikes near Bend, Oregon, and give you all the info you need to enjoy them as we have.

Keep in mind, building a list like this is impossible.  Bend has many of the best hikes in Oregon.  Ranking them is subjective and personal.

Rankings: Best Hikes Near Bend Oregon

Part of the reason there are so many amazing Bend hikes is that there are multiple areas around Bend with beautiful natural scenery.  

The Cascade Lakes / Three Sisters Wilderness is a wonderland with enough beautiful hikes to last a lifetime. But the Misery Ridge hike at Smith Rock is also magical and totally different, as are the hikes in the Oregon Badlands.

Between the Newberry National Volcanic Monument and the Buttes, Bend’s ancient volcanic history also offers fascinating hiking landscapes. 

Plus, despite being in a high desert environment, there are plenty of hikes near Bend that involve water and getting wet.

1. Green Lakes / Soda Creek Loop Hike

Rating:  Difficult

Why Do It: This is our favorite loop hike in our favorite area around Bend, the Cascade Lakes region.  The Green Lakes are stunning and symbolic of the gorgeous lakes in the high country above Bend.

While there are several routes to reach Green Lakes, we suggest the Green Lakes / Soda Creek Loop Trail.  This is a rather long hike, but a stunner that makes a loop starting and ending from the Green Lakes trailhead.

This hike also offers plenty of views of South Sister, Broken Top, and Mount Bachelor. An optional 2.1-mile spur to Moraine Lake is highly recommended.

This is a popular trail starting from a busy parking lot, so plan accordingly.  You’ll need a Day Pass or Northwest Forest Pass to park and a Central Cascades Wilderness Permit to hike between June 15 and October 15.

2. Tam McArthur Rim Trail

Why Do It:  You could easily rate this the most epic hike near Bend, or in all of Oregon.  No other hike gives you the experience of being in the Three Sisters Wilderness and views of so many stunning peaks as the Tam McArthur Rim hike.

The hike starts from Three Creeks Lake (beautiful itself), at high elevation, and only goes higher.  This means snow along the trail, even into late summer.

But the views of Broken Top, the Three Sisters, and Mt. Bachelor are stunning.  On a clear day, Nicole and I have easily seen Mt. Washington, Three-Fingered Jack, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Hood, and Mt. Rainier.  Fabulous!

If you can get a wilderness pass late in summer for this hike, do it!

3. Smith Rock - Misery Ridge Loop Trail

Rating:  Difficult

Why Do It: The Bend area has so many phenomenal hikes in beautiful places. But you’d be hard-pressed to find a more stunning area than Smith Rock State Park. The Misery Ridge Loop Hike at Smith Rock is the signature hike in the area, and if you are a visitor to the Bend area, it’s a must-do.

It’s a challenging hike, with almost 1,000 feet in elevation gain up and over the Misery Ridge.  But the total distance is not too bad (about 4 miles), and the rewarding viewpoints make it all worthwhile.

The Smith Rock area has a distinctive terrain shaped by the Crooked River.  The top is a great place to eat lunch, and on the back side, you’ll see the interesting Monkey Face rock and likely lots of rock climbers.

This hike starts and ends at Smith Rock State Park’s main parking lot and trailhead. You need an Oregon State Park Pass, which you can buy in advance or onsite.

4. Broken Top and No Name Lake

Why Do It:

Another hike in the Three Sister Wilderness.  Broken Top is a peak that lies just underneath the Three Sisters, which contain the glacier-fed green No Name Lake at the summit.  A stunning hike with amazing views.

The hike is challenging. You’ll do about 6 miles out and back and climb 1,400 feet up Broken Top Mountain.

The most challenging part of the hike might be getting to the trailhead. The Broken Top Crater Trailhead sits on a poorly maintained forest road that is often closed. If it’s open, you’ll need a high-clearance vehicle to drive there.

You can alternatively do this hike from the Todd Lake Trailhead, but this almost doubles the hike’s distance.

You’ll also need a Cascades Wilderness Permit for this hike from June 15 to October 15.

5. Ray Atkeson Trail at Sparks Lake

Rating:  Easy

Why Do It: For an easier hike that also provides a great introduction to the Cascade Lakes area near Bend, check out the Ray Atkeson Loop Trail at Sparks Lake. This relatively easy and short trail packs in a lot of scenery.

Sparks Lake is one of the prominent Cascade Lakes, and on this trail, you pass multiple vistas over the lake with South Sister and Broken Top in the distance. The trail itself travels through lodgepole pine, and you’ll notice interesting lava-formed rocks.

The Ray Atkeson Trail actually has multiple loops. You can decide which ones to do or do both of them. This trail starts from the Sparks Lake Day Use area, which can get crowded during busy times, and you’ll need a day-use parking pass.

6. Deschutes River Trail

Rating:  Easy

Why Do It: The Deschutes River Trail is another trail that almost anyone can hike. It is well-maintained and follows the Deschutes River throughout the entire Bend area.

This trail offers an endless number of routes and hikes, as it’s accessible from 8-10 spots within the Bend area. A popular place to start is the Meadows Day Use Area in south Bend. From here, you can hike further south toward Dillon Falls and Benham Falls or north toward town.

Old Mill, Tumalo State Park, and Dillon Falls are other popular places to access the trail and begin a hike.

Most of the trail is relatively flat, though you’ll climb to an occasional overlook.

7. South Sister Summit

Rating:  Very Difficult

Why Do It:  Only for advanced hikers!  South Sister is the third-highest peak in Oregon, and it can be hiked without requiring technical climbing skills.  However, the hike is no joke – a 12+ mile adventure with 5,000 feet of elevation gain.  There is scrambling, switchbacks, and sandy areas…enough to challenge even strong hikers.

If you are up for it, can plan accordingly, and are acclimated, you’ll be rewarded with an epic hike. The views are tremendous, and from the summit, it feels like you can see the entire Cascade range, including Mount Jefferson, Mount Hood, and Mount Adams.  (Many of the same peaks you see when flying into Redmond/Bend.)

You’ll want to start early, bring plenty of water, and bring high-energy snacks for this trek. Check the weather in advance and watch it carefully; this is one hike you don’t want to be on during a storm.

8. Trail of the Molten Lava (Newberry)

Rating:  Easy

Why Do It:  The Newberry National Volcanic Monument is one of the a must-do active ities in Bend.  It’s a place of natural wonder shaped by volcanic eruption 75,000 years ago.

There are a series of trails in the area, but an easy trail that gives you a great introduction to the area is the paved Trail of the Molten Lava.  The short ~1 mile trail starts and ends from the Lava Lands Visitor Center and is suitable for anyone (approximately 1/3 of the trail is universal accessible).

You’ll see fascinating landscapes with interpretive signs that tell the ancient history of how these lands were created. Along the way, there’s a great viewpoint of the Cascade Range in the distance.

9. Matthieu Lakes Loop Trail (via PCT)

Rating:  Moderate

Why Do It:  This is another loop hike in the Three Sisters Wilderness, but in a very different area with a different vibe.  Departing from Lava Lake Camp Trailhead, about 1 hour northwest of Bend, this hike utilizes the Millican Crater Trail, Lava Camp Lake Trail, and the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) to create a stunning loop trail.

You’ll encounter ancient lava flows, both the South and North Matthieu Lakes, and gorgeous vistas that give you a feel for what hiking the PCT is all about. On clear days, Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington, and Three-Fingered Jack can all be seen.

Insect repellant is recommended, and a wilderness pass is required if you do this hike between June 15 and October 15.

Both lakes have designated campsites if you want to turn this hike into a backpacking trip.

10. Pilot Butte

Rating:  Moderate

Why Do It: One of Bend’s more interesting topographies is
Pilot Butte, a volcanic cinder cone formed 200,000 years ago that now sits right in the middle of downtown. It serves as a landmark for residents and visitors, orienting them wherever they are in the city.

Hiking to the top of Pilot Butte is well worth it. The view of the Cascade Range from there is one of the best in the city, especially at sunset.   The hike up is moderately steep but generally not strenuous.

Be warned: You can also drive to the top of Pilot Butte (and many do every day).  However, this still makes it a worthwhile hike; parking is easy and free, and you can beat the location (right in downtown Bend!).

11. Todd Lake Loop

Rating:  Moderate

Why Do It: If you are looking for an easy hike the whole family can do in the Cascades Lake area, then the

Todd Lake Loop is perfect.  Todd Lake is in the same area as Sparks Lake and Devils Lake, a beautiful spot right underneath the Sisters Mountains with gorgeous views of Mount Bachelor.

This was the first hike I took my kids on in Bend. It’s a gentle, short loop around the lake with postcard photos in every direction. While you need a Day Pass or Northwest Forest Pass to park, if you are here in summer, you don’t need a Wilderness Permit as you do in most of the Three Sisters Wilderness.

The Todd Lake area can get crowded quickly, and parking can be tight, so try to get there early.

12. Tumalo Mountain

Rating:  Difficult

Why Do It: If you don’t mind an intense climb,
Tumalo Mountain is a classic Bend hike with dramatic, rewarding views.  Tumalo sits basically across from Mount Batchelor, and the summit views of Batchelor, Three Sisters, and Broken Top are iconic.

The two-mile climb to the top feels straight up; you’ll climb 1,400 feet up this volcanic peak.  Tumalo is a trendy winter snowshoe venue, and while I’ve never done it, locals rave about the experience of snowshoeing up Tumalo on a crisp winter day.

Parking for the trailhead is located at the Dutchman Sno-Park, which requires a permit from November to April.

13. Steelhead Falls

Why Do It: More of an excursion than hike, Steelhead Falls is an off-the-beaten path spot on the Deschutes River that is all about getting wet.

The hike is only about 0.5 miles long and starts just west of Terrebonne, north of Bend. It takes you to a beautiful set of falls on the Deschutes and one of the best swimming holes in Central Oregon.

Do this on a warm day, bring a picnic and your swimwear.  You can cliff jump into the water, swim up to the falls, and explore the canyon.  There’s an option to continue down the trail down the river if you want to enjoy more

The hike, water, and scenery make Steelhead Falls is one of the best excursions around Bend.

Things to Consider When Hiking Around Bend

As you consider where to hikes around Bend, here’s some important general information about these hikes that will help you prepare.

Weather.  Bend enjoys a high desert climate, which means plenty of clear days and bountiful sunshine.  But Bend does get storms in both summer and winter, and they can be severe.  Check the weather forecasts in advance, especially if you are heading on an extended hike deep into the backcountry.

Parking.  Depending on the hike you choose, the parking situation at the trailhead can be busy.  In the Cascade Lakes area, where many of the Bend hikes below begin, parking lots at trailheads fill up very fast on weekends.  Get there early and have a backup plan if your planned parking lot is full.  Also, read below for more on parking permits.

Misery Ridge Loop Trail Summit

Seasons and Snow.  The conditions of the hikes in this list can vary tremendously throughout the year.  Some higher-elevation areas, like the Cascade Lakes/Three Sisters Wilderness, are virtually under snow from fall until late spring.

Summer time is amazing and usually great for all the hikes below.  For other times of the year, the best advice is to check the status of roads, parking lots, and trails online before heading out.

Passes and Permits Needed for Hiking Around Bend

Understanding the appropriate pass and permit needed for parking and simply accessing a hiking area is important and can be confusing, especially for visitors. 

Here is a summary of the permits that might be needed, and for we indicate what you need for each hike above. 

Day Use Pass. Many National Forest Recreation areas (such as Sparks Lake or Tumalo Falls) require a Day Use Pass. This pass costs $5 and can be purchased onsite or online in advance.
 
Northwest Forest Pass. This is an annual pass good at all National Forest Recreation sites in Washington and Oregon. It is basically a way to buy Day Use Passes for a year in advance (and avoid the hassle each visit). If you are a local or plan to visit more than a few sites, it’s well worth buying.  Purchase Online.

Central Cascades Wilderness Permit – Day Use.  Many of the best hikes around Bend are in the Central Cascades Wilderness / Three Sisters Wilderness area.  This includes many of the Bend hikes below.  You need a permit in advance if you plan to hike in this area between June 15 and October 15.  Note:  these sell out fast, especially in the best areas.

While technically outside the city limits, heading to the Rimrock Trail network off Cascade Lakes Highway feels like you don’t even leave Bend.

Of course, once you venture into its trail system into its diverse terrain, you feel far away from the city.

Classic Central Oregon Landscape Just Outside Town

The Rimrock Trail Network near Bend offers a scenic escape for mountain bikers, hikers, or anyone who wants to talk their dog for a walk.

Whether you’re after a challenging ride or a leisurely hike, this trail delivers panoramic canyon views, diverse terrain, and a rejuvenating experience in Central Oregon’s high desert landscape.

It’s also a great way to access the Deschutes River.  There are trails that traverse down to the river, and gentle paths that follow in both directions.

The Rimrock Trail Basics

One of the best features of this trail network is how easily it is to access from Bend.  The Rimrock Trailhead is located just off Cascades Lake Highway southwest of town.

A paved path leads from the neighborhoods along Century Drive past Tetherow until you see signs directing you left towards the trailhead area.

Accessing and Parking at Rim Rock

You can ride your bike directly to the trailhead from many parts of Bend.  But if you drive, there’s ample parking at the trailhead.

Biking the Rim Rock Trail System

Rimrock is a multi-use area, its great for hiking, letting your dog loose, or just going for a walk down to the river.  But usually Nicole and I are there to go biking. 

We’ve done many different routes, mostly loops that are a few miles and are great for after work or when you want something fun without traveling far from town.

Our ‘normal’ route is to take the Gooddog Trail from the trailhead all the way to the Deschutes River.  You can then return via the Sirius Trail, creating about a 3-mile loop.

The trails are typical Bend single-track gravel and dirt.  There will be some rock sections and an occasional overlook.

But also sweeping descents into small canyons, and short navigations between and around boulders.

Hiking the Rim Rock Trail Network

If you refer to the Rimrock Trail Map, you’ll see that lots of other shorter possible loops exist, using the Rimrock Rover Trail, which make for short, easy, and enjoyable hikes.

Hiking at Rimrock is yet another reason we love Bend.  There are a plethora of long, epic hikes around Bend.

But here, you can be outdoors in the wilderness by traveling just 5 minutes outside town.

What Makes Rim Rock Great for Dogs

Pretty much anytime you visit the Rimrock area near Bend, you’ll find lots of locals with their dogs.

That’s because Rimrock is a popular off-leash area for dogs, and a place for four-legged friends to run free, including down along the Deschutes River.

Despite being in the high desert, Bend offers many amazing water-related excursions. The Deschutes River and the Cascade Lakes provide ample opportunities for Bend residents and visitors to swim, SUP, fish, and kayak.

Steelhead Falls near Terrebonne is a hike and swim excursion that is one of the best in the Bend Oregon area.  The Deschutes Canyon around Steelhead Falls is a great area to hike in general. 

But if you are looking for a destination to get in the water on a warm day, this is the place.

What Makes the Hike and Swim in Steelhead Falls Oregon So Amazing

This trailhead is just west of Terrebonne, about 40 minutes north of Bend.  The hike to the falls is only about 0.5 miles, but you will immediately notice the beauty of the canyon.

Arriving at the falls, you will come upon a perfect viewpoint of the Deschutes River falling 20 feet over multiple rock cliffs.  

The surrounding canyon looks like an oasis with juniper trees and wildflowers.  It’s a perfect place for families, a picnic, and most of all – swimming.

A large pool of water lies at the bottom of the falls, which is very swimmable.  It is possible swim right up to the falls, and there are lots of surrounding rock formations for super fun cliff diving!

Nicole and I visiting again in July 2025 and a group had strung a cable across the river so they could take turns zip-lining across the pools of water.

Steelhead Falls Oregon Basics

Steelhead Falls is technically in the Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area (WSA) (OR-5-14).  Madras, Sisters, and Redman surround this WSA, and itself is filled with outdoor excursions, all close to Bend.

Steelhead Falls begins from a trailhead about 15 minutes west of Terrebonne and about 40 minutes total from downtown Bend.  The hike from the trailhead to the falls is quite short and mostly easy, with a few uphill stretches, but very good for families and dogs.

  • Total Distance:  0.5 Miles
  • Total Duration:  10-15 minutes
  • Trailhead Location:  8 miles west of Terrebonne
  • Distance from Downtown Bend:  ~32 miles or 40 minutes
  • Open:  Year Round
  • Permit:  Not Required (Free)

The Hike to Steelhead Falls

I’ve been to this spot many times with Nicole and my family, mostly on hot summer days when we are looking to cool off in the water. It can get crowded on warm summer days, but don’t let that stop you; it’s a tremendous Bend Excursion anytime.

It can also be a perfect place for a quick dip after a hike in the surrounding area, for example, after hiking at Smith Rock State Park.

It’s also relatively easy to get to, but feels very secluded, almost like a ‘secret spot’ once you arrive at the trailhead.  Parking is free and easy, and no permits are required.  Feel free to bring your dog.

The Steelhead Falls Canyon

The falls area is a picturesque deep rock canyon that is classic Deschutes.  Juniper trees and other pine scrubs add greenery, as do wildflowers and endless shades of colored rock.

You’ll want to use caution once leaving the trail at the falls, as you’ll be free-scaling the rocks and boulders in the canyon down to the river.  

But the fun continues as you search for the perfect perch for a picnic or just to hang out.  Shade and sun options are both available.

Even if you don’t plan to swim, exploring this small canyon, climbing the rocks, and checking out various viewpoints of the falls makes for a fun outing in itself.

The hike is short, mostly modest with a few steep sections.  There is the option to make this a longer hike of about 2.5 miles if you extend beyond the falls.

Swimming in the Deschutes Right Up to Steelhead Falls

Assuming you’ve come on a relatively warm day, the main attraction of this outing is the chance to get in the water and swim.  Steelhead Falls also has some great rock perches for cliff diving.

The base of the falls results in a large, relatively calm pool that can be waist high in depth or many feet over your head if you swim closer to the falls (which I recommend you do).

In fact, on a crowded day, you will probably see people swimming daringly right up to the base of the falls and climbing rocks on and behind some of the falls.

The trail side of the river also has one main (but actually several) rock perch for cliff jumping.  My kids and I had loads of fun making this plunge, which is the real deal. 

Obviously, use caution, especially if you are picking your own spot to jump into the water.

Also, keep in mind that the river flow will vary at different times of the year. Springtime means a larger flow and stronger falls, so use more caution when swimming close to the falls during this time.

If you want simply a calm day in the water, go the opposite direction of the falls, and make your way down the easy flowing Deschutes River and enjoy the scenery.

Additional Tips for Steelhead Falls Oregon

  • You can turn your visit to Steelhead Falls into a more extended 2.5 mile hike
  • Use caution hiking in winter months, can be icy
  • There is a small campground at the trailhead (first come first serve)
  • Many reports of good fishing above and below falls on Deschutes

There’s no shortage of epic hikes around Bend, many of them focused on the Cascade Lakes and Three Sisters Wilderness areas just west of town. 

However, there’s much more to explore, including a fascinating area and one of our favorites: the Oregon Badlands Wilderness.

To explore this strange but beautiful volcanic wilderness, you can introduce yourself to the area by hiking the Ancient Juniper and Flatiron Rock Loop trail, just 25 minutes east of Bend.

I recently completed a hike on a cool June day, seeking a moderately challenging half-day trek. June is a wonderful time to explore the Oregon Badlands, with wildflowers in full bloom and truly magnificent.

Ancient Juniper + Flatiron Rock Loop Hike: Basics

The Oregon Badlands Wilderness is a vast expanse with an expansive trail network.  This hike utilizes two trails on the south side to form an easy but interesting loop.

  • Trailhead Location:  Flatiron Rock Trailhead, Hwy 20, 16 miles from Bend
  • Parking:  Gravel Parking Lot (Free)

  • Total Distance:  3.1 Mile Loop

Take a Step Into the Oregon Badlands Wilderness

The Oregon Badlands Wilderness is a striking high-desert landscape shaped by ancient volcanic activity. Over 7 million years ago, lava from regional eruptions flowed across the land, forming a thick basalt crust that now serves as the foundation of the area.

What To Expect On This Intro Hike

The trail kicks off from the Flatiron Rock Trailhead, and you can do this in either direction.  When I did this on a Sunday in June 2025, the parking lot was barely half full and I saw very few parties on during the hike.

You can go either direction, but I usually start on the Flatiron Trail (counterclockwise).  You’ll quickly be immersed in a starkly beautiful expanse of sage and volcanic rock.

Weathered junipers twist skyward, some of which are believed to be over 1,000 years old.

Wildlife sightings include jackrabbits, lizards, and occasionally mule deer. But what I noticed most were lots of ant hills.

Bring plenty of water and sun protection—this is high desert terrain, after all.

The Stunning Wildflower Display in June

Hiking this trail in late spring or early June is especially special due to the abundance of bursting wildflowers.  I was blown away by the beauty, particularly the abundance of yellow arrowleaf balsamroot flowers across the landscape.

The Mysterious Juniper Trees

After approximately 1.2 miles, you’ll reach the intersection with the Ancient Juniper Loop Trail. You’ll take this trail almost 2 miles back to the start.

This section of the hike further highlights the mysterious, ancient juniper trees of the terrain.  Some of these trees are over 1,000 years old, particularly those with trunks that have been stained a deep red.

The Bend, OR, area has a dazzling array of amazing hikes, many of which are located in the Cascades Lakes area just west of town.  This post will describe one of our favorites: a Green Lakes Hike near Bend.

It’s an epic and quintessential Cascades Lake loop hike that has a little of everything.

This is a somewhat lengthy (12.5 miles) but spectacular hike just outside Bend.  It can be crowded, but for good reason.  If you’re visiting Bend, Oregon, and looking for a signature hike to enjoy the area, read on.

A Stunning Green Lakes Trail Hike

The Green Lakes and Soda Creek Loop Hike Near Bend

Hiking to Green Lakes and then returning via the Soda Creek Trail creates a loop that is a rather long but rewarding Three Sisters stunner.  You’ll visit not only Green Lakes, have the option to visit Moraine Lake, get lots of views of South Sister and Broken Top, then enjoy the beautiful meadows along Soda Creek.

Green Lakes Hike Near Bend

You’ll obviously want to check conditions, but this is generally a late spring to early fall hike (the rest of the year the area may be closed or not accessible to hiking).  The popularity of the area also means crowds, so get there early as parking at the Green Lakes trailhead fills up fast.

Green Lake / Soda Creek Loop Hike Basics

  • Location:  Three Sisters Wilderness Area
  • Hike Start and End:  Green Lakes Trailhead, just off Cascades Lakes Highway ~25 miles west of Bend
  • Parking:  Large Parking Area (fills up early!)
  • Fees:  $5 Day Pass (ePass), or Northwest Forest Pass, or Annual Pass
  • Total Distance:  12.5 miles (5-6 hours)
  • Difficulty:  Hard
  • Elevation Gain:  1,600 feet
  • Dogs: Permitted on Leash

The Trailhead and Start Area

This loop hike begins at the Green Lakes trailhead, which serves as the base for a series of hikes in the area.  This is part of what makes it crowded during peak times, but there is a fairly large parking area. 

Be sure to buy a day pass, which can be purchased on-site or in advance via an ePass.  Your Northwest Forest Pass or Annual Pass is good here as well.

For this loop hike, you are going to start out north on the Fall Creek Trail.  After crossing a bridge, you’ll wind through dense forest and pass several waterfalls off the side of the trail.  Trek carefully off the trail into the woods for a better view.

Obsidian rock flows also become prominent as you continue north on the Fall Creek Trail.  One more warning: mosquitoes can be pesky, so be prepared with repellent!

The Optional Moraine Lake Spur

After 2.1 miles on the Falls Creek Trail, you’ll come to the intersection of the spur to Moraine Lake (look for the sign). 

You’ll have a decision here because the optional spur to Moraine Lake and back will add a little over 2 miles to your hike.

If you don’t mind making a long day hike even longer, consider making a detour to Moraine Lake.  It’s a stunning mountain lake that is very swimmable and has a gorgeous backdrop of South Sister. 

I’ve swum in Moraine Lake many times, and while cold, it’s a great mountain swim in crystal clear water.

You’ll hike about 1 mile from the intersection to the lake, where you’ll see signs.  At Moraine, you’ll have the option to circle the lake or turn and go back.

The Push Up and Rewards of Reaching Green Lakes

Whether you’ve made the detour to Moraine or not, the trek up Falls Creek to Green Lakes will be a steady 4-mile climb.  Keep following the signs to ‘Green Lakes’ as there are multiple intersections along the way.

The first clearing into the Green Lakes basin is stunning.  Clear views of South Sister and Broken Top.  Deep emerald lakes.  Volcanic scenery all around.

There are three lakes in the area. Be sure to spend time hiking up and exploring the area.  You may see campers and swimmers.  It’s a perfect picnic area.

Skirting Around Broken Top to the Soda Creek Trail

It’s tempting to spend a lot of time in the Green Lakes area, which many people do, and then backtrack the way they came.  But to complete this loop, you still have a lot of hiking and lots to see.

To continue, you’ll be taking the Broken Top Trail, which continues to climb and skirts the south side of Broken Top Mountain.  This is also the section most likely to still have snow, due to its high elevation. 

This part of the trail offers spectacular views of South Sister, Broken Top, and Mount Bachelor. You’ll have constant photo ops, which is part of why making this loop hike is so worth it.

The trail gradually begins to level out, and you’ll soon be gliding through meadows and heading downhill.

Following Soda Creek Through Magnificent Meadows

Look for the intersection with the Soda Creek Trail, as it will be the last leg of the journey.  This section is dominated by the meadows, magnificent and seemingly endless. 

During most parts of the season when this hike is open, the wildflowers are abundant and breathtaking.

There are also a number of creek crossings, some of which involve minor rock stepping exercises, while others have bridges built.  The crossing of Crater Creek is the most challenging and best chance for wet hiking boots (but fun).

Have patience during this gradual descending leg of the hike.  It’s long and meandering. 

After ~9 miles, you’ll start to play the mind game of ‘how much further’, and the last ~2 miles of the hike are somewhat volcanic and dry.

After ~12.5 miles (plus another 2.5 if you did the Moraine Lake optional spur), you’ll be back where you started at the Green Lakes trailhead, having just completed one of the signature loop hikes around Bend.

Probably no better place to stop for craft beer and delicious food than Deschutes Brewery, right off Century Drive on your way back into town. 

Deschutes is constantly pouring interesting and delicious pilsners, ales, IPAs, and more. Plus, the pub food is legit for post-hike eating.
