Bend, Oregon, is known for its breweries and outdoor adventure.  But it has a sneaky great restaurant scene and nightlife.  There are a number of cool bars in Bend, OR, places you can get a cocktail or join a bar crawl.

Why We Love It:  A venue with maybe the best vibe and character in Bend, Velvet is the ultimate place to get a drink in downtown Bend.

The intimate, wood-paneled bar is not big and feels like the place to be on weekends.  Furnished, of course, with velvet couches.

Their mixologists craft a variety of fresh cocktails, and they also serve local beers and wine.  

This is where Nicole and I go for a drink before or after dinner in downtown Bend.

2. The Stihl Whiskey Bar (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It:  Another bar in downtown Bend that oozes with character is The Stihl Whiskey Bar.

If you like whiskey, you’ll love this place.  The selection of bourbons, ryes, and other whiskeys is stellar, and their bartenders mix up lots of creative cocktails.

This vibe at Stihl is part dive bar, part western saloon.  It’s one of Nicole’s and my favorite places for a cocktail in Bend.

3. Bar RBC (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It:  A slightly more upscale bar in downtown Bend is BarRBC.

This is the sister venue to Rancher Butcher Chef (RBC), one of Bend’s best restaurants.  BarRBC opened in 2024 and is a small plates concept with a sleek bar and a great cocktail list.

If you like wine, you’ll especially like the BarRBC wine list and wines by the glass (their food is designed to go with wine).

4. Bosa (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It:  One of our favorite places to eat (especially pasta) in Bend is Bosa.  Part of why we love it is the incredible bar and drink menu.

More specifically, Nicole has taught me to love Negronis.  This classic Italian cocktail made with Campari is a staple at Bosa; in fact, they have an entire menu of Negronis to try.

Bosa is a popular place on Galveston Ave, so if you score some seats at their bar on a weekend, consider yourself lucky.

5. Dear Irene (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It:  Dear Irene is a fine dining venue in downtown Bend with an upscale bar.  So if you are feeling dressy, or want to take your wife somewhere nice, it fits the bill.

The vibe is speakeasy, with dark lighting, velvet chairs, and sophisticated cocktails.

The carefully curated cocktail list is not huge but impressive.  It has a massive spirits list, so it’s also a place where you can ask the bartender, “Surprise me with something“.

6. The Flamingo Room (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: For a place in southwest Bend that is a bit more eclectic, check out The Flamingo Room.  

While probably not for everyone, this joint is bright, retro, and great for your Instagram.  There are hanging plants, artifacts, and delicious cocktails.

There always seems to be a crowd at Flamingo, and always something going on.

  • Tropical Cocktails
  • Great For a Group
  • Fun Music and Vibe

7. Cellar 65 (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: It was super exciting in 2024 when Cellar 65 opened, right across the Newport Ave bridge in downtown.

This speakeasy-type venue immediately became one of the best places in Bend to get a cocktail.  They serve amazing, beautiful cocktails and have a nice menu of Mediterranean small plates to accompany them.

The hardest part of visiting Cellar 65 is finding it.  You want to plug in ‘Blissful Spoon’ in your Maps app.  Cellar 65 is directly underneath.

7. Drake (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Drake is a downtown brasserie that is one of Nicole’s and my favorite places to eat in Bend.  But it’s also a great venue if you are only out for drinks

It’s a cozy and comfortable spot on the prominent corner of Franklin and Wall St downtown.  The elegant bar is simple and serves up hand-crafted cocktails, local beers, and a decent selection of wines by the glass.

So if you are visiting Bend, I highly recommend you stop in Drake, either for a meal or just drinks.

9. Prost! (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Do you like German beer?  We all know Bend is a craft beer town, but for me, German beer has always been the gold standard.

The best place for German beer in Bend is Prost!.  This German bar and restaurant pours a large selection of imported German pilsners, lagers, hefes, marzans, and Oktoberfest beers.

The menu of German food is great as well (all the classics like Wienerschnitzel and Bratwurst).

It’s also a great place to watch soccer in Bend.  

If you are wondering, ‘prost!’ means ‘cheers!’ in German.

10. Sidelines (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Another great spot for watching sports is Sidelines on Wall Street in downtown.

Sidelines is a classic sports bar with lots of TVs and a great bar food menu.  Try the wings or nachos, and pair it with whatever local craft beers they are serving on tap.

While we haven’t tried it, Sidelines has also built a reputation for serving one of the better breakfasts in Bend.

11. River Pig Saloon (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: This is a real gem in the Box Factory in Bend.  River Pig Saloon is a rugged place that feels like an upscale saloon.

I love the cocktail list at River Pig, and the bar food options make for a great meal or an accompaniment to your drinks.  It gets boisterous on weekends if you like a place with some atmosphere.

If you are wondering, River Pig refers to the timber workers of the past that guide logs down rivers to mills.  Those guys definitely needed a drink at the end of the day.

12. Hawkeye and Huckleberry (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Nicole and I love this restaurant.  We think it’s one of the best restaurants in Bend.

But Hawkeye and Huckleberry in southwest is a great place for cocktails as well.  The front bar is modern and sleek.  On warm days its faces outside for an al fresco vibe.

Hawk and Huck serves up a tantalizing selection of drinks.  The cocktail list is creative, and there is plenty of whiskeys and tequilas to accompany the interesting beers and wines on the menu.

This ‘lounge’ is a great place to eat, drink, or just hang out.

13. San Simón (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: San Simon is a small, eclectic bar on a side alley in downtown Bend.  This candle-lit venue focuses on Latin-inspired drinks and simple but delicious bar food.

San Simon is a great place for a pre-dinner drink if you have reservations downtown.  The rum, tequila, and mezcal cocktails seem to be their strength.

They open everyday at 3 pm and have happy hour specials until 6 pm.

14. Astro Lounge (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Another cool downtown spot to get drinks is Astro Lounge.  This place has been around in Bend for years (early 2000s) and has a loyal local following.

It’s a casual place for cocktails, beers, and nightlife.  It’s likely to have a DJ on weekends, and trivia or karaoke any night of the week.  

If you are doing a bar crawl in downtown Bend, make Astro Lounge one of your stops.  Maybe the last stop.

The Bend Bar Scene

When people think of drinking in Bend, they usually think of breweries.  But Bend’s bar and nightlife scene is underrated and reflects the town’s relaxed yet energetic vibe.

Downtown Bend especially has a great concentration of bars and restaurants that make for fun nights out.  Most of the recommended spots on this list are in downtown Bend.

The restaurant scene in Bend is constantly evolving, mainly for the better. Most of us begrudge Bend’s increasing popularity- it’s making everything more crowded.

However, growth in Bend does have one welcome benefit – new restaurants.

The Hawkeye and Huckleberry Lounge, which opened in June 2024, is a perfect example.

The Hawkeye and Huckleberry Lounge in Bend is a creation of celebrity chef Brian Malarkey and his brother and business partner, James Malarkey. 

The Malarkeys are Central Oregon locals who’ve had restaurant success across the West Coast, but wanted to create something close to their roots.

The venue they’ve created has rapidly established itself as one of the best restaurants in Bend, and it’s definitely a favorite for both Nicole and me.

Its vibe, menu, and atmosphere make it a must-visit destination in Bend.

The Hawkeye and Huckleberry Lounge is in West Bend on Century Drive.  The restaurant is the former home to Walt Reilly (eatery and mini-golf center).

A New Sensation in Bend From Celebrity Chef Brian Malarkey

According to a write-up in Bend Magazine, it was James who initiated discussions about a new venture in Bend. The success of other high-end restaurants, such as Bosa and Rancher Butcher Chef, provided evidence that it could work.

Nicole and I always say that judging a restaurant is based on the overall experience.  This includes the vibe, atmosphere, menu, drinks, and of course food.  Dining at Hawk & Huck is definitely an experience.

The atmosphere at Hawkeye and Huckleberry greets you immediately upon entry. The lounge and bar area is located in the front. It’s a lively spot, featuring upscale, western-themed decor and diligent bartenders.

The decor in the dining room will make you look around throughout your entire meal. Interesting lamps, contemporary yet vintage western artifacts, and wall murals of classic rock artists give the space a lot of character.

A Cocktail Program Worth A Visit Alone

Speaking of drinks (this is a lounge, afterall), the Hawk & Huck cocktail menu shines.  Bartenders here aren’t just mixing—they’re creating. Expect house infusions, unexpected garnishes, and some of the best Old Fashioneds in Bend.

When Nicole and I last visited, I had the mezcal-based Man, I Feel Like a Woman (our server made me say it emphatically). Nicole enjoyed the I’m Your Huckleberry, a gin-based cocktail that is their signature.

There are plenty of local beers and international wines as well to pair with your meal.

Come For the Bar and Lounge, Stay For The Food

Nicole and I love the atmosphre at Hawk and Huck, but probably love the food even more.

The Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge menu is a ranch-to-table culinary journey. At its heart lies a wood-fired oven and an on-site butcher and smoker, enabling chefs to transform Tumalo Valley’s beef and produce into impeccably crafted dishes.

The Hawkeye and Huckleberry Lounge menu starts with unique appetizers such as Oregon beef tartare served with ranch aioli and hand-cut chips, a zesty roasted beet salad with burrata, or more adventurous options like beef tongue tostadas and fried shrimp toast.

Nicole loves burrata, which we enjoyed during our visit this summer.

Entrees feature dishes like wood-fired half chicken, Columbia River salmon, and heartier options like chili-rubbed Santa Maria skirt steak with chimichurri. 

Or go with cowboy-cut classics—bone-in ribeyes, New York strips, and filets—served with optional indulgent sauces such as crab hollandaise, chili butter, or bone marrow gravy.

For my meal, I chose the skirt steak, served with white beans and chimichurri.  Nicole had the chicken piccata, and we shared the grilled carrots side dish.

Even the desserts are fabulous, including the molten lava cake we enjoyed paired with a port during our last visit!

So Many Things That Make The Hawk & Huck Vibe

The dining experience encompasses much more than just the food. The restaurant’s layout features semi-private canvas tents for group dining, a lively outdoor patio, and an airy atmosphere that reflects the rugged elegance of the cuisine.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the place is the entrance to the event space.  To enter, you’re required to pass through a vintage 1970s era camping trailer…why not?

What Else to Know About The Hawkeye & Huckleberry Lounge

  • This might be Bend’s hottest new restaurant, make a reservation on weekends.
  • There’s Live Music on Fridays from 8:30 to 10:00 PM
  • There are multiple large party spaces at the venue.  The La Pine Canvas Tents can seat 20, a private room can accommodate 14, and the event space is for 80-100.

DRAKE is located on a prominent corner of downtown Bend, at the corner of Wall and Riverside.  It’s one block from Drake Park.

A Cornerstone Restaurant in Bend since 2013

If you are a resident or visitor strolling downtown, DRAKE is hard to miss.  It sits at a corner on Wall Street, at the end of the main shopping drag in downtown Bend.

Like most Bend residents, Nicole and I have always considered it an ‘anchor’ restaurant in Bend.  A reliable place we can duck into for a drink, a quick bite for lunch, or a date-night dinner.

This is likely the same perception many Bend residents have of DRAKE since its opening in 2013.

The Vibe at DRAKE in Bend

DRAKE offers an impressive menu with a variety of exceptional dishes, but the ambiance of the restaurant truly makes the dining experience. 

The main dining area at DRAKE combines the charm of an upscale tavern with the sophistication of a modern bistro. With its wood paneling, comfortable booth seating, and attractive bar, it creates an inviting atmosphere for either dinner or drinks.

However, maybe our favorite way to enjoy DRAKE Bend is during the warmer months when you can sit outside.

When it’s warm, DRAKE usually has a row of tables on Riverside Street for dining, which is precisely where Nicole and I ate during our recent visit to DRAKE in July 2025. 

The DRAKE Bar and Drink Menu

We think the cocktail, beer, and wine menu at DRAKE is perfect. 

The DRAKE craft cocktails are creative and well-made, the beer list has a good combination of international and local brews, and the wine list has just enough of a selection not to be overwhelming.

I’d certainly recommend both of the cocktails we ordered at our last visit:

  • O.K. Bloomer – Rye Whiskey based
  • White Lotus – Japanese Gin-based

The DRAKE Menu

The DRAKE menu is constantly evolving, which is part of why we love to revisit the restaurant.  I would describe the overall theme of the DRAKE lunch and dinner menu as ‘upscale comfort’.

It’s casual (and affordable) enough for a meal after a hike around Bend, but you can also use DRAKE for a nice night out with your significant other.

Here are some standout items we’ve had at DRAKE:

  • Buttermilk Fried Chicken – Crispy, juicy, and perfectly seasoned.

  • Braised Short Ribs – Slow-cooked and served with rich, savory sides.

  • DRAKE Burger – One of the best burgers in Bend.

  • Croque Madam (Brunch) – If you visit during brunch, don’t miss this classic.

During our last visit, Nicole and I both had steaks along with a bottle of Napa Cabernet.

Also, we capped it with dessert (Riccota Donuts).

Plan Your Visit to DRAKE

If you are visiting and looking for restaurant recommendations in Bend, definitely consider DRAKE for one of your meals.  

If you are wandering downtown, look for DRAKE and duck in for a drink or lunch.

Note that for dinner, especially on weekends, you’ll want to make a reservation on OpenTable.

DRAKE is also a great place for brunch on weekends.
