There are several great downtown Frederick restaurants offering a wide variety of cuisines for a city its size. If you occasionally crave Thai food or curry, there’s a great downtown option: Sumittra Thai.

Sumittra is a bright, vibrant restaurant in the heart of Frederick that serves all the classic Thai dishes. This bustling place continuously gets fabulous ratings for its food and service.

The Vibe at Sumittra Thai in Frederick

Sumittra is located on Patrick Street, just past the intersection with Market Street, so it is basically in the heart of downtown.

The area around this intersection is the hub of downtown Frederick’s restaurants and bars. Here, you’ll find hot spots such as Cafe Nola, Sabor de Cuba, Tsunami Ramen, and Cacique.

Sumittra Thai makes itself known in this hub with its bright orange canopy and often a line of diners waiting outside. It sits right under another Asian restaurant, LazyFish, which focuses on sushi.

Both establishments are owned by the same owners, who also own a Sumittra restaurant in Charles Town, WV.

Sumittra Thai Interior

Inside, you’ll find a busy dining room with brushed brick walls and more bright orange paint, giving the place a Southeast Asian vibe.

The indoor dining room is classy but casual.  It’s a happening place on weekends, but you won’t feel crowded eating in the dining room.

There is no bar at Sumittra, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have drinks.  It has a great selection of beer, wine, and cocktails.  On our last visit, Nicole had a ginger-themed vodka cocktail.

Sumittra Thai Basics

Sumittra has been in downtown Frederick since 2011. I would consider it a modern Thai restaurant with lots of Thai classics and some creative fusion dishes. It can be quite busy on weekends and does not take reservations. It’s also a great place for lunch if you are downtown.

Embracing Thai Culture Through Thai Food

Sumittra is a family-owned place whose main owner, ‘Jib’ named the establishment after his wife.  You can certainly tell the commitment to showcasing Thai culture through Thai food.

It’s a place where you tend to see the same servers repeatedly, and it has a ‘local’ feel. Luckily, the menu is extensive, so new dishes are always worth trying.

Sumittra Red Curry

The authenticity of the food, along with the Thai art and decorations in the restaurant, make Sumittra a place that goes beyond so many plastic Asian restaurants that all feel the same.

Favorites From the Sumittra Menu

The Sumittra Menu is extensive and super fun to explore. It includes familiar dishes like Pad Thai, Drunken Noodle, and Red, Green, and Pa-Nang Curry.

But you should head straight for the ‘Sumittra Specials’ if you want to try something new from the Thai cuisine realm.

For example, the Fantasia Duck is a typical Asian crispy duck made spicy with chili and basil. The Moo Yang is the Thai version of BBQ, a flavorful pork dish served with a very Thai papaya salad.

Sumittra Drunken Noodle

Thai Food is also about appetizers, and Sumittra has many, including Sa-Tay, Chicken Curry Puffs, and several types of Dumplings. Soups and stir-fries are also prevalent on the menu.

I personally like beer with Thai or any Asian food, and Sumittra serves Bangkok Lager and ShinghaMilk Teas, Fruit Teas, and Fizzy Teas (all available with Boba) are also on the menu.
