1. Downtown Frederick

Why Live Here: One of the best reasons to move to Frederick is its amazing downtown. Downtown Frederick is a walkable, lively, and historic area with an abundance of entertainment and several great parks.

Living downtown means enjoying all of this just steps from your front door. Frederick has an underrated food scene, and most of the best restaurants are downtown.

The same goes for coffee shops, bars, breweries, and art galleries.

You’ll also be able to take full advantage of Carroll Creek Park and Baker Park, the hubs of downtown Frederick where there is almost always something going on.

2. Baker Park

Why Live Here: Another in-town neighborhood adjacent to Downtown Frederick is Baker Park. This section of town has a slightly different vibe, as the neighborhood is mostly made up of stately homes on walkable streets.

You’ll still be walking distance to most of the venues in downtown, and you’ll of course be able to take advantage of beautiful Baker Park.

While there are all types of homes in Baker Park, there are more single-family homes, and the average price is higher than downtown Frederick. Lots of homeowners in Baker Park have renovated old homes and created lovely, modern downtown living spaces.

3. Ballenger Creek

Why Live Here: If you are looking for convenience, modern housing that’s still affordable and close to downtown, you should seriously consider Ballenger Creek.

This is where Nicole lived temporarily when she first moved to Frederick, and it was a great first place to live in the area.

Ballenger Creek on the south side of Frederick provides easy access to both I-70 and I-270, making it a great place for commuters. It also has plenty of shopping, grocery stores, restaurants, and healthcare facilities nearby.

Lots of the home developments in Ballenger Creek are newer, with modern floor plans and lots of amenities.

Finally, the Ballenger Creek Trail is one of the best bike trails in Frederick.

4. Wormans Mill

Why Live Here: This is Frederick’s best version of a village within a city. Wormans Mill feels like a small town within Frederick, with some fabulous neighborhoods and its own village center.

If you drive around, you’ll quickly see why it’s one of Frederick’s most sought-after neighborhoods. Wide sidewalks, attractive homes, clean landscaping, and that village square.

Wormans Mill has an active community with lots of events and a clubhouse with a pool and tennis courts.

Also, Ricci, one of our favorite Italian restaurants in Frederick, is in the heart of Wormans Mill!

5. Renn Quarter

Why Live Here: This is one of the most exciting new home communities in Frederick. This D.R. Horton development is just southeast of downtown (walking distance) and features single-family homes and townhomes.

There are big plans for this community, which already has a clubhouse, pool, dog park, and plenty of walking trails. It’s in a great school district, and commercial developments are coming up all around the area.

Nicole and I have watched this neighborhood grow over the last few years. If you are looking for a new home in Frederick, Renn Quarter should be on your short list to check out.

6. Bartonsville

Why Live Here: Bartonsville is where the neighborhoods start to feel suburban around Frederick, though actually not being far outside town at all.

Just south of I-70, east of town, Bartonsville has several quiet neighborhoods, including some new home communities like Rosehaven by Wormald.

You are no longer walkable to downtown Frederick, but you aren’t farther than a ten-minute car ride to virtually anywhere. Plus, the houses in Bartonsville are larger for the price.

Another nice feature is Pinecliff Park with lovely playgrounds and ball fields where rec softball games are played in warmer months.

7. Spring Ridge

Why Live Here: Spring Ridge is one of Frederick’s early planned communities (built in the 1990s and 2000s), and for many residents, it still checks lots of boxes.

The community is just north of Bartonsville, close to downtown Frederick, and has easy access to I-70. The neighborhoods are also suburban and quiet, with well-maintained landscapes and common areas.

There’s a strong community feel, and amenities like a pool, wildlife refuge, and regular events.

8. Lake Linganore

Why Live Here: Take a drive around Lake Linganore, and you’ll forget you are near Frederick or even in Maryland. It has a vibe all to its own, and it’s pretty special.

Located about fifteen minutes east of town, Lake Linganore is a planned community that revolves around several lakes, private beaches, wooded trails, and homes that remind you of being on vacation.

If you like outdoor living, this is the Frederick neighborhood for you – kayaking, biking, nature trails. Plus there’s a clubhouse, beautiful pool, and playgrounds.

Some of the neighborhoods have been around for years, but there are new developments in Lake Linganore by Ryan Homes as of today.

If you are looking to live just outsside Frederick, Lake Linganore is the first place to check out.

9. Urbana

Why Live Here: Urbana could be considered a suburb of both Frederick, MD, and Washington, DC.

Urbana is virtually the last DC suburb north on I-270. It’s also the first town south of Frederick, only about ten minutes away.

Urbana has a series of planned communities mostly built in the last decade. The Villages of Urbana is a lovely development from Natelli Communities and has a mix of home types plus business and commercial areas.

The Woodlands of Urbana is a newer 55+ community that is very popular and that you should definitely consider if it fits your profile.

All these communities have walkable neighborhoods, plenty of amenities, and the town of Urbana is growing fast with more to do all the time.

10. Monrovia (Landsdale)

Why Live Here: Landsdale is a hidden gem. Located in Monrovia, MD, about 15 minutes east of Frederick, it’s somewhat secluded and hard to find. But it’s a great neighborhood near Frederick.

Landsdale has a mix of single-family homes and townhomes, built by builders like Ryan Homes and Wormald. The streets, sidewalks, playgrounds, and common areas are well-kept, and there’s a great community clubhouse and pool.

If you are a family with kids, Landsdale has a brand new elementary school. You are also five minutes from Urbana, which gives you access to all the commercial areas in that growing area.

Families looking for larger, more modern homes in a good school district should definitely check out Landsdale.

11. Holly Hills

Why Live Here: If you are looking for a proper county club community, then your main option around Frederick is Holly Hills.

Located in Ijamsville, MD, Holly Hills is a long-established neighborhood centered around its golf club. It’s a private golf club, though you don’t have to be a member to live in the neighborhood.

The neighborhood is mostly larger single-family homes, and many non-golfing residents have a ‘social membership’ to the club, which gives them access to all the other amenities (pool, tennis, gym, and activities).

Note: one advantage of moving to Frederick is all the great public golf courses in the area. But if you want to join a private club and live nearby, Holly Hills is your place.

12. Brunswick

Why Live Here: You could probably debate whether Brunswick is considered a Frederick neighborhood. But many of its residents consider it to be.

Brunswick is a town fifteen minutes south of Frederick right on the Potomac River, and offers a lifestyle different from virtually all the other places on this list.

Brunswick is a historic town, but has recent new home developments like Brunswick Crossing, which are pretty amazing.

Living here means access to the Potomac, the C&O Canal, Harpers Ferry, and lots of other outdoor adventures. It’s also commuter-friendly as there is a MARC station and access to MD 340.

It’s probably not what you had in mind when considering moving to Frederick, but you should definitely give it consideration.

Thinking about moving to Frederick, Maryland? You’re not alone.

Frederick and Frederick County have become one of the fastest-growing areas in Maryland. In fact, census data for Frederick County show an 11.5% population growth from 2020 to 2025.

People are relocating to Frederick from Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Montgomery County, Northern Virginia, and even farther away to take advantage of Frederick’s lower cost of living and higher quality of life.

Nicole and I are residents of Frederick, and we’ve spent countless weekends exploring every corner of Frederick County.

We’ve done all the hikes, visited all the restaurants, wineries, and breweries, and discovered countless hidden gems. We’ve watched this region evolve into one of the best in Maryland.

However, Frederick, like everywhere, is not perfect.

If you are considering living in Frederick, MD, this guide will walk you through the pros and cons of living here so you can decide if it’s right for you.

Why Are So Many People Moving to Frederick, MD?

Frederick sits in a unique location. Here you have access to two major cities (Washington, DC, and Baltimore), but live on the edge of rural Maryland, less than an hour from the mountains of Western Maryland.

It’s a place with small-town charm, still connected to big cities.

There’s also lots to do in and around Frederick. The city continues to add restaurants, shops, breweries, and wineries.

The job market is strong and expanding, and the cost of living is still modest.

The PROs of Living in Frederick, MD

1. A Charming and Lively Downtown

Frederick has one of Maryland’s best downtowns. This was one of the first things that attracted me to Frederick: a downtown that is just big enough to be charming and lively, without being crowded or difficult to navigate.

Nicole and I often spend our weekends in downtown Frederick. The downtown bar and restaurant scene is underrated, and there is a fantastic cluster of breweries around Carroll Creek Park.

Downtown Frederick is ideal for browsing local shops, exploring the art district, and parking is very convenient.

Speaking of Carroll Creek, this pedestrian-friendly urban park is the heart of downtown and is almost always bustling with activity.

If you move to Frederick from a larger city, you’ll likely have the same experience as Nicole and me. We find downtown Frederick to have everything we need to keep us entertained, without the hassle we used to endure going into downtown Washington, D.C.

2. Cost of Living

Things like cost of living are all relative, so this depends on where you are moving from.

But many residents of Frederick are similar to Nicole and me; they’ve moved from the suburbs of other major cities in the mid-Atlantic or on the East Coast (Washington, D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, etc.).

In this scenario, living in the neighborhoods around Frederick is definitely cheaper than in places like Fairfax County, VA; Montgomery County, MD; and Howard County, MD.

3. Location

Another thing we love about living in Frederick is its unique location.

Frederick is situated at nearly equal distances from Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, with all that those two great cities have to offer. You can reach both cities in about forty-five minutes.

However, Frederick is a town with its own ecosystem. It does not feel like a ‘suburb’ of a larger city.

Once you leave downtown Frederick, you quickly enter a more rural setting that is greener, slower, prettier, and less crowded than most suburbs.

Frederick is also close to lots of outdoor activities. You can quickly be hiking, biking, or visiting a winery in the countryside by traveling only minutes from Frederick.

This includes favorite places of ours like Cunningham Falls State Park (amazing hikes), Gambrills State Park, or Black Ankle Vineyards.

4. Underrated Restaurant Scene

Nicole and I are big-time foodies, and we are constantly amazed at the restaurant scene in Frederick.

In fact, after many years of traveling to Washington, D.C., and Baltimore for restaurant outings, we rarely leave the Frederick area to dine and constantly discover exciting new spots.

The dining scene in Frederick ranges from fine dining to casual eats.

There are some great fine dining options such as the Wye Oak Tavern (thanks to Frederick’s own celebrity chefs The Voltaggio Brothers).

But you can find all kinds of other great eats in Frederick, including great pizza, several good burger joints, and a variety of local restaurants serving a range of cuisines.

5. Outdoor Recreation

As mentioned above, Frederick’s prime location puts you near a wide range of great outdoor recreation.

Cunningham Falls State Park, Catoctin Mountain Park, and Gambrills State Park are all within 30 minutes and offer hiking, biking, and camping opportunities.

There’s lots more to do outdoors around Frederick beyond hiking. You can kayak the Monocacy or float the Potomac River. Frederick has the best cluster of golf courses you’ll find in all of Maryland.

6. Strong Job Market

Living in Frederick means you can still take advantage of the economic powerhouse that is the D.C. area.

Washington is regularly ranked among the top 10 job markets in the US, primarily due to its strong government, defense, and technology sectors.

Many residents of Frederick commute and work in Washington, D.C., or surrounding areas with plenty of jobs, including

But there are plenty of job opportunities in Frederick and the surrounding area. Many residents work for employers like Fort Dietrick, AstraZeneca, Frederick Health Hospital, and Frederick County Public Schools

7. Breweries. Wineries, and Distilleries

Here’s another thing Nicole and I love about Frederick: there’s a fabulous set of wineries, breweries, and distilleries in the area! We visit them regularly.

The Maryland wine scene is rapidly catching up to Virginia, and Frederick County is leading the way. Our favorite wineries include some special places, including:

The CONs of Living in Frederick, MD

1. Housing Isn't Cheap Anymore

The biggest downside of living in Frederick is the cost of housing.

While still cheaper than its Montgomery County neighbor, enough residents from places like Bethesda, Rockville, and Potomac have flocked to the Frederick area in search of larger homes, bigger yards, and more affordability, and this increased demand has driven up prices.

Housing prices in Frederick County have nearly doubled since 2015. Then, the median home price was roughly $250,000 to $270,000. Today, that figure has climbed closer to $470,000 (Zillow).

A limited supply of housing is partly to blame. But mostly it’s demand-driven by many of the factors in this article: a higher quality of life, a strong job market, and the affordability of living in Frederick compared to other suburban Maryland areas.

2. Traffic

Traffic in Frederick is worse than expected for a city of its size, largely due to its location at a crossroads of major thoroughfares, which leads to congestion.

I-270, I-70, and Route 40 all intersect in Frederick. They can all get backed up during busy times.

I-270 is only two lanes in both directions for the first 10 miles south of Frederick towards D.C. I find this highway to be nearly always backed up, whether I am leaving or traveling to Frederick.

3. Maryland Taxes

This will depend on where you are moving from, as taxes in Frederick or Frederick County are not necessarily higher than in other parts of Maryland.

But if you are moving to Frederick from out of state, you should know that Maryland consistently ranks in the top ten for overall tax burden.

Also, Maryland usually has State and Local taxes. So, for example, if you live in Frederick County, you’ll be paying Maryland State taxes (ranging from 2.0% to 5.75%), plus local Frederick County taxes.

If that weren’t enough, if you live in Frederick City, you’ll also pay a Frederick municipal tax (which funds things like city police, fire, and snow removal).

4. Transportation Limitations

If there’s a final negative I’d point out about living in Frederick, it’s the transportation options.

While you have access to the three major airports in the Washington/Baltimore area (BWI, DCA, and IAD), none are very close to Frederick. You’ll be driving 45 to 90 minutes to any of these airports, depending on the time of day and traffic.

Washington, D.C. has a great metro system. However, the closest station to Frederick (Shady Grove) is still 30 minutes away. We usually find it more convenient to drive to DC.

There is a MARC station in Frederick (Brunswick Line) that is heavily used by commuters who work in the Washington, D.C., area.

It can also get you to Union Station downtown, so you can transfer to domestic trains up and down the East Coast.

Is Frederick MD Good for Families?

You can enjoy all the amazing things to do in Frederick, MD, without leaving town. But a bonus to living in Frederick are the day trip possibilities.

Why We Love It: Harper’s Ferry has a little bit of everything.

History buffs will enjoy learning about its significance in the Civil War and John Brown’s escapades. Nicole and I are usually in Harpers Ferry for a hike, such as the Maryland Heights Loop Trail.

It’s also where the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers meet, so there are hikes with beautiful mountain and river views.

4. Cunningham Falls and Catoctin Mountain State Parks (Maryland)

Why We Love It: These two adjacent Maryland State parks are in Frederick’s backyard. They are full of things to do.

Escape to Cunningham Falls State Park for a short hike to Maryland’s highest falls, a day at the Hunting Creek Lake beach, or beautiful fall foliage.

Catoctin State Park has some of our favorite hikes in Maryland, including the Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock Loop hike.

Why We Love It: Antietam is matched only by Gettysburg in terms of its Civil War prominence in the mid-Atlantic.

7. Shenandoah National Park (Virginia)

Why We Love It: If you love National Parks, then there is a fabulous one right in Frederick’s backyard.

Shenandoah National Park stretches along the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia and offers great hiking, camping, and a can’t-miss car ride along the ridge.

You can visit for a day hike (including the epic Old Rag hike), but one of Frederick’s best day trips is a drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, with countless pullouts offering views of the park’s mountains.

8. Charlottesville and Monticello (Virginia)

Why We Love It: This breaks our stated rules because it’s about a 2.5-hour drive from Frederick. But a day trip to the Charlottesville area in Virginia offers plenty to do.

It’s home to a popular wine region, especially around the town of Crozet. Check out King Family Vineyards.

Charlottesville itself is a great college town with lots of restaurants and the University of Virginia.

But the must-see venue in the area is Monticello. Thomas Jefferson’s Home is an interesting and lovely place to spend an afternoon.

9. St. Michaels (Maryland Eastern Shore)

Why We Love It: Maryland’s Eastern Shore is like another world compared to the rest of the state. It’s a great place to explore.

By far our favorite spot on the Eastern Shore is St. Michaels. This charming town has great seafood, Chesapeake Bay views, and lovely downtown shopping.

There are lots of wineries worth visiting on the Eastern Shore; check out Crow Vineyards on your way to or from St. Michaels.

10. Luray Caverns (Virginia)

Why We Love It: A truly spectacular natural wonder, Luray Caverns is the best of several caverns you can visit in the Shenandoah Valley.

The caverns are awe-inspiring, but so are the crowds. Plan ahead by buying tickets in advance and try not to arrive during peak weekend hours.

There’s loads more to do at Luray, especially for families, including a garden maze, heritage village, a rope adventure park, and more.

11. New Market and Mt. Airy (Maryland)

Why We Love It: If you don’t want to travel far but want to check out some nearby towns to Frederick, drive 15 minutes east to New Market, then slightly farther to Mt. Airy.

You can combine a visit to both into an interesting day trip from Frederick.

Both have small but walkable downtowns with some interesting Maryland history. In New Market, check out Tree Trekkers or Gaver Farms, especially if you have kids. You can make a day trip alone out of each of these.

In Mount Airy, if you are downtown, check out Liquidity Aleworks.

12. Loudoun County (Maryland)

Why We Love It: We are partial to this area because Glenn lived here before moving to Frederick.

Loudoun County sits just across the Potomac River from Frederick County and offers a ton of places to discover, especially if you like wineries and breweries.

A winery day trip to Loudoun can be one of the best in the Mid-Atlantic. Check out some of our favorites, including Breaux Vineyards, Stone Tower Winery, and Greenhill Vineyards.

Spend some time in Middleburg if you can, and try to grab lunch or dinner at our favorite hidden gem in Loudoun, Market Table Bistro.

In our previous articles, we’ve highlighted the many excellent breweries in Frederick. If you’re a craft beer fan, there are numerous fantastic venues to explore in downtown Frederick or within a short drive from the area. One of the latest additions is Stone Silo Brewery.

Nicole and I have been spending a lot of our time at Stone Silo Brewery lately, not only because it’s conveniently located near our home but also due to its excellent craft beer and beautiful surroundings.

A Farm Brewery with Great Beer and Equally Great Views

Stone Silo has everything we look for in a great brewery to visit. The beer menu is excellent. The tap room is cozy and comfortable.

Stone Silo’s best feature is its outdoor setting.

Located on an expansive farm, the outdoor seating area offers great views of the Maryland countryside, making it the perfect place to hang out with a beer in nice weather.

Stone Silo Brewery is about a 25-minute drive from Frederick toward Damascus. Located in Maryland farm country, it makes for a great brewery outing from Frederick, and can be combined with a visit to other area breweries (see below).

The Stone Silo Backstory

Stone Silo opened in 2023 and became Damascus’s first farm brewery. We’ve watched it get more popular (and crowded on weekends!) ever since.

The name comes from the ‘actual’ Stone Silo attached to the tap room that originates from the farmhouse that dates back to 1931. The brewery was founded by Don and Susan Katzenberger, who purchased the property in 2020.

A Milkhouse Converted to a Tap Room

Beers are brewed in the larger farmhouse on the property. The original milkhouse next to it has been beautifully converted to a tap room.

It has a rustic feel, with wood beams, stone accents, and plenty of seating to enjoy a craft beer or a flight.

Stone Silo Brewery - Beers

The Stone Silo beer menu has a classic collection of craft brews. They brew several mainstays like a Pilsner (Silo Light), Kolsch (Good Intent), Amber Ale (Copper Cowbell), and a Tangerine Hazy named after the farm’s original owner (Nehemiah Nectar).

During my recent visit in 2026, Carlos had me try some of his favorite new beers at Stone Silo, including the Silo De Sol (Mexican Lager) and the Blackberry Currant (Sour). Delicious!

A Farm Setting, Perfect Place for a Sunset with a Craft Beer

Come to Stone Silo for the beer and the rustic tap room. But what should really motivate you to visit is the farm setting.

The owners have done a ton of work to expand the outdoor seating area.

This includes a beautiful patio, fire pits, and Adirondacks in the field.

The views over the Maryland countryside are fabulous, and it’s magical at sunset.

Food Options at Stone Silo (Update for 2026)

Part of why we love Stone Silo is that it feels like a neighborhood hangout.

It’s a place to go and chill, have a beer, and enjoy nature. It’s not a high-energy place with lots of bustling activity and happenings (like so many breweries have become).

During our recent visit with Carlos in June 2026, he explained the new food lineup at Stone Silo.

The main food offering at Stone Silo now is their own in-house food truck, The Silo Kitchen. The focus is on high-quality brewery food, including burgers made with local beef (from Wagner’s in Mount Airy).

Stone Silo still hosts guest food trucks, usually from Thursday to Sunday.

Stone Silo also now has its own farm-to-glass movement.

They now grow hops on-site for their beers, plus other ingredients like organic wheat, peppers, peaches, and ~30 blueberry bushes for use in their beer recipes.

Their onsite plantings also include vegetables (like red ‘bloody butcher’ corn), which will be used by their food truck.

Other Exciting Updates at Stone Silo in 2026

Carlos also showed us some of the other new features at Stone Silo, including a large patio for events and an adults-only area during regular hours.

Stone Silo also now has a members’ beer club for fans of their beer who want to drink it regularly.

This also includes special access to certain areas of the brewery with the best views (a huge differentiator you don’t see at many breweries).

Stone Silo has also become a regular venue for live music, especially on weekends.

The outdoor seating area is now set up to easily accommodate more guests and live music in a tranquil setting.

Maybe the most exciting thing we saw during our recent visit to Stone Silo had nothing to do with the property.

Like many of you, we are a couple with one person who likes beer much more than the other. This can be a challenge when visiting breweries.

Stone Silo has a great solution to this: Seltzers!

They now serve a variety of seltzer flavors on tap. I tried several, and as a beer lover, I found them to be extremely satisfying (not too sweet)!

This weekend, Nicole and I checked out one of the hottest new restaurants in Frederick, MD: Lima Soul. This exciting Peruvian spot in downtown is all over social media right now, and it did not disappoint.

Lima Soul is a place for flavors. We were lucky enough to have the owner guide us through some amazing dishes and cocktails, and it was special.

If you are looking for the next great Downtown Frederick dining experience, you need to visit yourself.

Several years ago, my kids and I took an unforgettable trip to hike the Inca Trail in Peru. There were many memorable aspects of the journey, including the town of Cusco, the richness of Peruvian culture, and, of course, Machu Picchu.

However, perhaps the most remarkable part of our experience was the cuisine. Peru offers incredible food! I’ve loved Peruvian food ever since.

Lima Soul Frederick, MD - Basics

Lima Soul is located in the heart of downtown Frederick on Patrick Street, just a block off North Market Street.

It’s adjacent to other popular restaurants, such as Sumittra Thai and JoJo’s. (Lima Soul occupies the building formerly home to Delizia Cafe.)

First Impressions of Lima Soul

Downtown Frederick is an underrated destination for great restaurants, and Lima Soul is a fantastic addition to the lineup.

Located on bustling Patrick Street, home to popular spots like Cafe Nola, Sumittra Thai, Lazy Fish, JoJo’s, and Sabor de Cuba, Lima Soul brings a delicious Peruvian focus to Frederick’s dining scene.

Lima Soul is similar to many downtown Frederick restaurants in that it is upscale enough for date night but casual without being overly fancy.

The Menu at Lima Soul Peruvian Restaurant

If you aren’t familiar with Peruvian cuisine, well, you need to. The Lima Soul menu brings these exciting flavors out in an aggressive way.

Peruvian cuisine is one of the most diverse in the world. Heavily influenced by indigenous, Spanish, and (as Antonio explained to us) early Japanese immigrants.

The Lima Soul menu is full on Peruvian, and here is what to expect:

Fresh seafood dishes
Latin flavors and spices
Lots of fresh citrus
Amazing ceviches
Flavorful grilled meats
Fresh Juices and handcrafted cocktails

The Lima Soul menu is very focused on starters, small plates, ceviches, and raw bar, plus a short list of entrees.

What We Ordered at Lima Soul

Luckily, we had Antonio to guide us through the menu and make recommendations.

I’m a huge fan of ceviches (and have incredible memories of the fresh ones in Peru). So we started with Trio Civichero. Fabulous!

The freshness and flavors of this dish cannot be overstated. In fact, I could have composed an entire meal at Lima Soul solely from ceviche and other raw fish dishes.

However, Antonio had more recommendations, so Nicole and I continued on to the Pulpo a la Parrilla con Chimichurri (grilled octopus – Nicole’s favorite), and the Lasana de Aji de Gallina.

Both dishes were delicious and authentically Peruvian. The octopus was succulent, complemented by a lima bean purée.

The lasagna was the most intriguing dish of the night. Made by Antonio himself, it featured layers of pasta filled with a traditional yellow chicken stew. It was unique and incredibly tasty.

We finished with dessert (volcano lava cake) :).

The Vibe at Lima Soul

It will take some time for Lima Soul to settle in and find its place in Frederick. But it’s already a cool place for a night out.

If you like to linger over dinner, slowly order small plates along with cocktails (including lots of pisco), then you’ll love Lima Soul.

In fact, the bar at Lima Soul is inviting in itself, and there were several couples eating there in a ‘chef’s table’ fashion.

The night we visited had a live music performer, but the place still had a dining room vibe only with some background music.

Antonio also explained that Lima Soul will eventually have a small Peruvian-focused market in the back, featuring products from Peruvian artists and food producers.

Final Verdit - Is Lima Soul Worth Visiting?

Nicole and I love dining in downtown Frederick, and the more cool restaurants we can add to our rotation, the better. Lima Soul Frederick is now on the list.

We’d highly recommend you do the same, especially if you have never tried authentic Peruvian cuisine. It will surprise you in a very delicious way.

Why We Love It: A venue with maybe the best vibe and character in Bend, Velvet is the ultimate place to get a drink in downtown Bend.

The intimate, wood-paneled bar is not big and feels like the place to be on weekends. Furnished, of course, with velvet couches.

Their mixologists craft a variety of fresh cocktails, and they also serve local beers and wine.

This is where Nicole and I go for a drink before or after dinner in downtown Bend.

Why We Love It: Another bar in downtown Bend that oozes with character is The Stihl Whiskey Bar.

Why We Love It: A slightly more upscale bar in downtown Bend is BarRBC.

Why We Love It: One of our favorite places to eat (especially pasta) in Bend is Bosa. Part of why we love it is the incredible bar and drink menu.

More specifically, Nicole has taught me to love Negronis. This classic Italian cocktail made with Campari is a staple at Bosa; in fact, they have an entire menu of Negronis to try.

Bosa is a popular place on Galveston Ave, so if you score some seats at their bar on a weekend, consider yourself lucky.

5. Dear Irene (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Dear Irene is a fine dining venue in downtown Bend with an upscale bar. So if you are feeling dressy, or want to take your wife somewhere nice, it fits the bill.

The vibe is speakeasy, with dark lighting, velvet chairs, and sophisticated cocktails.

The carefully curated cocktail list is not huge but impressive. It has a massive spirits list, so it’s also a place where you can ask the bartender, “Surprise me with something“.

6. The Flamingo Room (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: For a place in southwest Bend that is a bit more eclectic, check out The Flamingo Room.

While probably not for everyone, this joint is bright, retro, and great for your Instagram. There are hanging plants, artifacts, and delicious cocktails.

There always seems to be a crowd at Flamingo, and always something going on.

7. Cellar 65 (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: It was super exciting in 2024 when Cellar 65 opened, right across the Newport Ave bridge in downtown.

This speakeasy-type venue immediately became one of the best places in Bend to get a cocktail. They serve amazing, beautiful cocktails and have a nice menu of Mediterranean small plates to accompany them.

The hardest part of visiting Cellar 65 is finding it. You want to plug in ‘Blissful Spoon’ in your Maps app. Cellar 65 is directly underneath.

7. Drake (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Drake is a downtown brasserie that is one of Nicole’s and my favorite places to eat in Bend. But it’s also a great venue if you are only out for drinks

It’s a cozy and comfortable spot on the prominent corner of Franklin and Wall St downtown. The elegant bar is simple and serves up hand-crafted cocktails, local beers, and a decent selection of wines by the glass.

So if you are visiting Bend, I highly recommend you stop in Drake, either for a meal or just drinks.

9. Prost! (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Do you like German beer? We all know Bend is a craft beer town, but for me, German beer has always been the gold standard.

The best place for German beer in Bend is Prost!. This German bar and restaurant pours a large selection of imported German pilsners, lagers, hefes, marzans, and Oktoberfest beers.

The menu of German food is great as well (all the classics like Wienerschnitzel and Bratwurst).

It’s also a great place to watch soccer in Bend.

If you are wondering, ‘prost!’ means ‘cheers!’ in German.

10. Sidelines (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Another great spot for watching sports is Sidelines on Wall Street in downtown.

Sidelines is a classic sports bar with lots of TVs and a great bar food menu. Try the wings or nachos, and pair it with whatever local craft beers they are serving on tap.

While we haven’t tried it, Sidelines has also built a reputation for serving one of the better breakfasts in Bend.

11. River Pig Saloon (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: This is a real gem in the Box Factory in Bend. River Pig Saloon is a rugged place that feels like an upscale saloon.

I love the cocktail list at River Pig, and the bar food options make for a great meal or an accompaniment to your drinks. It gets boisterous on weekends if you like a place with some atmosphere.

If you are wondering, River Pig refers to the timber workers of the past that guide logs down rivers to mills. Those guys definitely needed a drink at the end of the day.

12. Hawkeye and Huckleberry (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: Nicole and I love this restaurant. We think it’s one of the best restaurants in Bend.

But Hawkeye and Huckleberry in southwest is a great place for cocktails as well. The front bar is modern and sleek. On warm days its faces outside for an al fresco vibe.

Hawk and Huck serves up a tantalizing selection of drinks. The cocktail list is creative, and there is plenty of whiskeys and tequilas to accompany the interesting beers and wines on the menu.

This ‘lounge’ is a great place to eat, drink, or just hang out.

13. San Simón (Bend, OR)

Why We Love It: San Simon is a small, eclectic bar on a side alley in downtown Bend. This candle-lit venue focuses on Latin-inspired drinks and simple but delicious bar food.

San Simon is a great place for a pre-dinner drink if you have reservations downtown. The rum, tequila, and mezcal cocktails seem to be their strength.

They open everyday at 3 pm and have happy hour specials until 6 pm.

Why We Love It: Another cool downtown spot to get drinks is Astro Lounge. This place has been around in Bend for years (early 2000s) and has a loyal local following.

If you are doing a bar crawl in downtown Bend, make Astro Lounge one of your stops. Maybe the last stop.

When people think of drinking in Bend, they usually think of breweries. But Bend’s bar and nightlife scene is underrated and reflects the town’s relaxed yet energetic vibe.

Downtown Bend especially has a great concentration of bars and restaurants that make for fun nights out. Most of the recommended spots on this list are in downtown Bend.

The Unique and Utterly Delightful Visit to Mazzaroth Vineyard

I was both excited and perplexed when Glenn told me we would visit Mazzaroth Vineyard on a recent Saturday afternoon. I was excited because, well, I love wine and exploring new Frederick area wineries. I was perplexed because I had never even heard of Mazzaroth.

When we pulled up for our 3:30 appointment, if it hadn’t been for the vines covering the south-facing hillside of the property, we would have thought we were rolling up the driveway of someone’s rural home. It was a beautiful property with one of the most spectacular views of any private house I’ve visited in MD.

This was the beginning of one of the most interesting and enjoyable winery experiences Glenn and I have ever had.

A Local Winery That Redefines 'Local', plus Garry!

Exiting our car, Glenn and I exchanged a look as there was literally no one there but us. No one. No tasting room. No food truck. No one-man guitar band, no locals, no guests at all.

But we were almost immediately greeted at our car by Mazzaroth’s owner, Garry Cohen, and his schnauzer, Leo. Both welcomed us very enthusiastically.

After introducing himself and welcoming us to Mazzaroth, Garry led us across the patio and down into what looked to be the basement of his house. Inside was the first evidence of actual winemaking – the whole room was lined with stainless tanks and other equipment. Garry grabbed a couple of glasses and poured us a taste of Vidal Blanc right from the tank.

The Mazzaroth Vineyard Tour

This was the beginning of the most intimate winery tour possible. Garry proceeded to walk us through the entire journey of his wine-making process. He gave us tastes straight from the barrel. He explained in detail how he made his different varietals, why some tasted the way they did, and why they tasted different in different years.

It was fascinating to listen to Garry discuss his successful journey from amateur to successful boutique Maryland wine maker.

For example, he explained the current Mazzaroth Vineyard partnership with local Middletown favorite Fratelli’s (one of the best Italian restaurants near Frederick). Mazzaroth provides Fratelli’s with their house white wine – a tasty blend of whites (including pinot gris) that Garry allowed us to try from the tank. It was delicious!

The following white, also straight from the tank, was Garry’s signature white wine – Vidal Blanc. This was a fruity, bright wine that was both of our favorites.

We were quickly warming to the wine and to Garry, who obviously takes pride in his wines and in being true to his roots.

The Mazzaroth Journey to Boutique Wine Making in Maryland

While we tasted, Garry told us how he and his wife searched for the perfect property for years to grow their grapes. The current location was chosen primarily for its orientation on the hillside and access to sunlight for the vines.

Garry and Mazzaroth have improved their techniques and grown their wine business ever since. Today, they not only grow their own grapes but also source grapes from Maryland’s Eastern shore and from as far away as California.

The operation is small, but the wine is reflective of the care that goes into producing it. The next and notable white we tried (again from the tank) was a Moscato. This wine has a sweet, fruity nose and a crispy, dry mouth feel. I’m no sommelier, but I’d score this one high. This winemaker knows what he’s doing.

The Most Intimate and Personalized Wine Tasting Experience You Will Ever Get

So far we’d been tasting in Garry’s production area, straight from tanks. But Garry eventually moved us to his formal tasting area, literally a tiny counter bar in his basement!

If not for the multiple award-winning wines lined up on the back bar, this would have been no different than being in a friend’s downstairs bar

We quickly got into serious Mazzaroth wine tasting as Garry started us on some reds. We tried a progressive flight of Tannats. Tannat is an attractive red varietal that we had only previously tasted once in the central coast of California (Paso Robles). We ended up purchasing several bottles of the Mazzaroth Tannat!

Garry continued to pour more reds. Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are definitely Mazzaroth winners. We eventually also tried his dessert wine (a ruby-style Port wine), which we also bought.

But it’s Garry’s detailed explanation of everything associated with the wine-making business that makes a visit to Mazzaroth Vineyard so enjoyable. As we sipped, Garry explained everything from procuring the grapes, fermenting and blending, the design of the label, and even demonstrating to us how a bottle is labeled.

We emerged from the basement bar totally enamored with Mazzaroth, plus a case of purchased wines in hand and a membership to Mazzaroth’s wine club! We plan to return per Garry’s invitation during a bottling session to participate and help out! Or just when it’s warmer to sip some of those lovely whites on the patio.

As mentioned, you can taste Mazzaroth’s wines for yourself at Fratelli’s in Middletown. It’s also in several local wine shops, including Frederick Wine House. The dessert wine is also on the menu at Up on Market in downtown Frederick.

Are you a fan of mead, or perhaps a wine enthusiast looking to broaden your horizons?

Regardless of your answer, Nicole and I would like to introduce you to a hidden gem that will tantalize your taste buds: Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD.

This established meadery and winery stands out as one of the unique tasting venues in the Frederick area, and it’s an experience that winery lovers in Maryland shouldn’t miss.

I’ll admit that I knew very little about mead before visiting Orchid Cellar. But after trying their small-batch, handcrafted meads, I’m sold on this ancient drink.

What is Mead?

Mead is a beverage made from fermented honey. It is considered by some to be the world’s oldest alcoholic beverage, originating in both Africa and China.

Mead’s popularity declined with the rise of beer and wine, but has made a comeback in recent years with the rise of local mead producers.

Mead generally is sweeter and has a higher alcohol content than wine (10% to 20% vs 9% to 16%). To me, mead most resembles dessert or late harvest wines.

Orchid Cellar combines lots of the characteristics that Nicole and I look for in a great winery experience.

Nicole and I recently visited on a warm, sunny Saturday in April, and the atmosphere was truly magical. The farm radiated with beauty, and the venue was abuzz with visitors, yet it maintained a comfortable sense of space.

A very nice tasting room employee gave us a detailed explanation of the Orchid Cellar meads as we tasted them, including how they are made, the different varietals, and the history of the meadery.

From Poland to Rural Maryland - The History of Orchid Cellar

While visiting Orchid Cellar, we were lucky enough to meet and spend time chatting with one of the founders, Marzanna Wilk.

Marzanna explained that she and her husband came to the US from Poland, and in the early 2000s, when she started to miss the taste of mead, she could not really find it in Maryland.

Fast-forward to 2006, and Marzanna and her husband Andrzej began making their own mead in Maryland. In 2009, they purchased the property that would eventually become the Orchid Cellar Meadery and Winery.

Their meads gained popularity, leading to consistent business growth.

By 2016, they had moved into a cabin-style tasting room (they built it themselves!), which serves as the foundation of the meadery today.

The Setting: Relaxing Farm Vibes in Middletown

One of the biggest reasons to visit Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD is the setting and atmosphere.

Set on a quiet farm property, you’ll find:

Rolling hills and mountain views
Plenty of outdoor seating areas on scenic decks, patios, and sprawling lawns, perfect for sunny days
A cozy tasting room with rustic charm
A vineyard to wander and farm animals to visit

One of the reasons Nicole and I love visiting wineries is the peaceful setting. Much like its nearby Middletown neighbor, Mazzaroth Vineyards, Orchid Cellar fits the bill.

Tasting Options at Orchid Cellar

Part of the fun in visiting Orchid Cellar is all the new types of beverages you can try. They serve not only wines, but a long list of traditional meads, and several incredibly delicious sparkling meads.

You can mix and match tastings however you like, and the variety of mead flavors is super interesting and fun. Here are some of Nicole’s and my favorites:

Squire – this is the most traditional honey mead
Jester – made with caramelized honey and intense orange flavor
Ghost Hunter – very peculiar, sweet and spicy combination
Wild Berry – our favorite of the sparkling meads

Tips for Visiting Orchid Cellar in Middletown, MD
